• Vacation & Travel: Exploring Washington, D.C. – Union Station, Capital, Washington Monument, and Vietnam Memorial

    P1150831c

Outside Union Station in Washington, D.C.  The girls first comment was, “It looks like an airport with everyone carrying their luggage around to meet the trains.”

Our family had the opportunity this summer to explore Washington, D.C.  The girls were VERY EXCITED!  They have studied, read, and heard various things about our capital city of Washington, D.C. so they were thrilled to finally get to go and see some of it for themselves.

We stayed in a Reston which is on the outskirts of Washington, D.C.  The girls were up early the first morning ready for an adventure.  We parked the van in Union Station and caught the trolley to get around town.

Originally, it was our plan to walk from monument to monument in Washington, D.C. but we found a good deal on the Old Town Trolley and decided that would be a great option especially for traveling around town with the kids.  I am glad we did because it was hot and we still had a lot of walking as it was with the trolley to ride between stops.  If you have kids I highly recommend riding the trolley because it helps break of the walking a little bit, gives you and the kids a chance to cool down, get a drink or snack, and rest.  The trolley drivers give you information about the various sights you are going by as well so you get a little bit of extra history information while going from one place to the next too.  The trolley’s went very close to every stop we were hoping to visit as well which made traveling around the town much easier for us.

As we were walking by the Vietnam Memorial one of the sections had these boots and jacket folded up neatly next to it.  It brought tears to my eyes thinking that someone’s family member gave their life to serve in this war.  What a special way to honor them by putting their or another family members boots next to their memorial.  It makes me thankful for those both in my family and others who have and are serving our country even though there are great risks involved.

  • Welcome Family!

    Welcome

We painted “Welcome” on our driveway as we waited for extended family to arrive!

We have had a great summer break with our kids home from school!!!  We packed in great adventures, time with our extended families, camps, Vacation Bible School, lots of memories, fun, history, road trips, flights, and much more!  So thankful for a wonderful time with our family.    Thanks for being patient with me as I enjoyed extra time with my family.  It is my intention of getting back on schedule here soon.  I will be posting some pictures of our summer fun soon!

Our first big summer adventure was having Jake’s sister and her family come stay with us for a week.  They arrived on the same day the girls got out of school.  We had a blast!  As an added bonus of fun we also got to see Jake’s cousins who live in the area several times throughout the week as well.  Thankful for family and fun times together!

  • Travel & Vacation: Visiting Our Grandparents

    Playing in the sun room

We recently had an opportunity to go to Vermont and spend some time with Jake’s family.  The girls had a blast playing games, doing puzzles, reading books, and more!  They thought it was awesome having a dog in the house too and loved leading Irish around as well as learning how to give her various commands.  It was a nice relaxing weekend with Jake’s Mom and grandparents.  Thankful for a chance to spend time with them and have fun.

Brina hanging out near the stove with Irish.  Hmmm….seems like Irish should be the one in that bed?   She thought Irish’s bed was a soft place to sit.  Irish was a good sport and didn’t seem to mind sharing.

Craft time!  The girls loved doing crafts and were often found at the table cutting, gluing, coloring and more!

Jake and Gramps – Wonder what they are up to now!?

We made a stop by Eatons Sugar House in South Royalton, Vermont

Glad to see the bridge is back up and working again.  It was taken out with a flood over a year ago

The river looks a little icy today, don’t think anyone wants to go tubing this time

  • Travel & Vacation: Celebrating in Vermont

Birthday cake!  Doesn’t the birthday cake look beautiful?!  Grandma Kay made the cake and did the main layer of frosting and Brina added all the colorful frosting and goodies to the cake.  It looked pretty and tasted delicious! 🙂

The girls had a four day birthday weekend since they didn’t have school on Friday or Monday so we made a quick trip up to Vermont to spend some time with Jake’s Mom and grandparents.  We celebrated the girls birthday during our visit which was a lot of fun.  The girls enjoyed spending time with their grandparents.  It was a great trip packed full of a lot of good memories.  Grandma Kay gave Brina some good tips on cake decorating which Brina loved (she was tickled pink that Grandma let her decorate their birthday cake).

Karlie all smiles. While Brina was decorating the birthday cake Karlie was happily picking up the toys and cleaning.

Brina loves helping in the kitchen, decorating the birthday cake was a big hit with her

Karlie discovered a cool toy in Grandma’s stash while cleaning up!  She thought the helicopter was pretty amazing!

Look whose eight!  Grandma Kay found some really cool number 8 balloons that the girls loved!

  • Travel & Vacation: Sledding in Vermont (part 2)

Karlie sledding right past me, giggling the whole time

The girls had a BLAST sledding in Vermont.  They tried out several spots for sledding.  The snow was beautiful and the weather was perfect.  They didn’t even complain about carrying their sleds back up the hills.

Brina zooming past me on the steep slope

    Daddy’s coming down now!

Mommy is having a blast sledding too!

Brina all bundled up and sledding down the hill again

Karlie came to an abrubt stop when she hit a tree.  Somehow she was the only one all weekend that hit a tree and she managed to get snagged on more than one!

    There goes Brina Bee again!

  • Travel & Vacation: Sledding in Vermont

Brina got some air on that ride down!

The girls were excited to make up a trip North to Vermont this winter.  They have been waiting to go sledding all winter and with us being in South Carolina we haven’t had any good sledding weather.  The girls spent hours outside over the long weekend playing in the snow and sledding.  We found some great places to go sledding!

Karlie had some interesting stops on the sled

Going for a sled ride, the girls are really excited!  Oh my, I  think Karlie is getting ready to throw a snow ball right at me.

  • Travel & Vacation: One Last Trip Around the Ship (Part 2)

One last walk on the track around the ship – Daddy and Brina

Since we had a little extra time after breakfast we decided to go for a walk around the ship one more time to soak in all the memories and the girls wanted to take a few extra pictures.  We were one of the last few people off the boat (we weren’t in a rush anyway because our flights didn’t leave until the afternoon) so we didn’t see a lot of people mostly just workers cleaning and prepping for the next crowd to come aboard later that day.

Another view of the kids pool area.  This one has a better picture of the “circle” pool that the kids enjoyed.  It looks like its currently being cleaned.

Brina soaking it all in one last time!

    Karlie loved cruising!

  • Travel & Vacation: Spending Time with Our Family

Someone’s looking pretty chipper first thing in the morning.  Karlie loved that her bunk bed was above ours so she would lean over when she woke up to see if we were awake yet.  Most days she was up at 6 am and ready to go!

We most of the day in Jamaica but later that afternoon and evening we had fun on the boat.  It was a more relaxing day, we played cards by the pool while the kids swam, talked, walked around, did activities, and went to the Love & Marriage show after the kids were in bed for the night.

Relaxing and playing cards with Josh, Dad, Mom, Lee, and Jake on the pool deck while the kids were swimming.  The girls realized we were by the “Sprinkles” ice cream machine playing cards and stopped swimming long enough to have an ice cream cone.

    Karlie on a mission!

A guy from the table next to us brought over glow sticks for the kids.  Nicko loved his!

    Sweet Karlie girl

    Brina enjoying her dessert

Eeek! There’s a bat in our room!  The girls reassured me that it was okay because the bat was really just a folded towel.  They thought it was pretty cool!

The Royal Promenade was all lit up at night.  It looked beautiful.  This is one end of it.  It had stores and restaurants on the main level and room balconies overlooking too.  They head a couple different dances, parades, and various activities at night in this area too.

The “Travel and Vacation” series is an insight into our trips together as a family and ways we relax.  Life is short and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to build memories with family and explore of of the most amazing places during our time away.  Explore with a good attitude, look for fun, and it will be an awesome trip jammed packed with positive memories.  It is refreshing having some time away from the regular routine.  Make it a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet new people and learn.  You just might see or try something new that takes your breath away!

  • Travel & Vacation: Kennedy Space Center (part 2)

We got to hear, Bob Springer, an astronaut that has been in space more than once speak and take a picture with him afterward! The girls were very excited to meet someone who has actually gone into space!

I shared a little bit about our trip to Kennedy Space Center earlier today.  Here is a little bit more about what we did during our adventure.  Thankful for the opportunity to spend some time in Florida, tour Kennedy Space Center, and spend some time catching up with our friends too.

Live feed of them docking!  So neat to watch it before it is posted to the public.

After talking with an astronaut for a few minutes the girls wanted a picture in front of the live feed so they took a seat on the edge of the stage.

Two little chickies are ready in their 3D glasses for the NASA show!

Pausing for a moment to relax while waiting for our food.  Karlie is processing it all and so THRILLED to be finally exploring Kennedy Space Center!

Having a BLAST at Kennedy Space Center!

Brina having fun and enjoying her Icee treat!

  • Travel & Vacation: Kennedy Space Center

Karlie has had a fascination with anything space related for several years now.  She loves to talk about rockets, planets, astronauts, and more!  Back when the girls were in preschool (more than 3 years ago) she received a Chic-Fil-A Kids Meal from school and inside it was a coupon for Kennedy Space Center.  She asked if she could hang the coupon up on the refrigerator so maybe sometime when we go to Kennedy Space Center we can use it. The coupon was on the refrigerator for a long time (even after it expired).  We did get a great deal online for a food package while at Kennedy Space Center (buy one get one free coupon) which covered all our food and snacks for the day.

A few months ago we made it to Kennedy Space Center.  I still remember the day we told her we got tickets and were going to Florida.  I think she jumped up and down, clapping, and giggling for several minutes.  She was over joyed and immediately counting down the days until we would leave for Florida.

Our whole family had a blast exploring Kennedy Space Center.  It was really neat to see all the history and learn so much about space, rockets, and everything else we could soak in that day.  We arrived at Kennedy Space Center a few minutes before it opened and left as they were closing the gates.  It was a neat experience!

    We are getting closer!

Starting to see some cool  stuff – United States Astronaut Hall of Fame

Karlie is on-the- edge-of-her-seat excited her dream to visit Kennedy Space Center is coming true!

    We made it!

Karlie is soooo excited and has looked forward to going to Kennedy Space Center for YEARS!

Sweet Brina had a grand time.  Even though rockets are more of Karlie’s love she had a lot of fun exploring the area with us.
