Weekend Getaway!
Beautiful Day for a road trip with my Handsome Man!
Jake and I were able to getaway for a weekend while the girls were at church camp! It was nice to spend some time relaxing together. We were able to chat and have some one-on-one time without any interruptions for a solid weekend. One of the best parts about where we went is that no cell phones, email, or internet work so there were less distractions! We even had our first couples massage which was so very relaxing!
Drinking my morning coffee while Jake makes breakfast! I am so spoiled. Grateful for a husband that cooks!
My date for the weekend! Love you Babycake!
We rarely take pictures together so we snapped one after our couples massage at the Old Red Bridge in Hot Springs, NC!
Our home away from home for the weekend!
We went to the Hot Springs Log Cabins, it was so nice and peaceful in the rocker on the front porch. The only thing you could hear were the birds!
We know how to bring in the summer and celebrate! It’s going to be a busy one so having a weekend together was a true treat! It was awesome to truly get away from it all! Thankful for opportunities to spend with him. He truly is my best friend and the love of my life. I am blessed!
Heart Reflections: 30 Quick Tips on Being a Positive Parent
The other day I was filling out a card for a cousin who recently had a baby. As I was writing the card I had a whirlwind of thoughts, advice, and things I wanted to share with this couple who just recently began this wonderful parenting journey. This is part of what I shared with them which was also a great reminder to me and hopefully an encouragement to you if you’re a parent as well. I have edited it to remove their specific names on the card.
Congratulations! We are so happy for your sweet family! Welcome to the crazy and fun parenting party! Wishing all of you a lifetime packed full of laughter and wonderful memories. Praying that parenting will be a great adventure for you. We are thrilled for all of you and wish you the very best! Many Blessings!
Parenting Tips We Want to Share (I added a couple more to the list since writing the card):
- Laugh as often as possible (even at your own mistakes)
- Make a point to hug your child and tell her that you love her everyday
- Cherish the memories, they really do grow up way too fast
- Show grace and mercy often
- Never discipline when you’re angry
- Take lots of pictures, especially of your times together
- Seek God’s wisdom daily for your life, marriage, and parenting
- Be a positive and encouraging cheerleader for your kid
- Take time regularly to listen to your child
- Breathe deeply and count to 10 when your patience is being stretched thin
- You will feel more like a “SuperDad” and “SuperMom” after a full nights sleep
- Spend quality one-on-one time with your child
- Read to them, sing with them, and play with them
- Pray a lot – some days you’ll really need it
- Protect, guide, and nurture the best you can then trust that God will work in their hearts
- Words can be used to build up or tear down (make sure to chose them wisely)
- It’s the little things that make the biggest impact on our kids
- It doesn’t have to be flashy or expensive to be fun
- Be content with your life
- Give generously to others
- Find teachable moments each day (kids love learning new stuff)
- Speak kindly to and about others (little eyes are watching what you do and hearing what you say)
- Stand up for what’s right (even when it’s hard)
- Allow your kids to make some mistakes on their own so they can learn
- Get creative and have fun together – life’s too short to be boring
- Smile, slow down a little, and enjoy this wonderful part of your life
- Make the “normal” everyday events exciting
- Go on adventures
- Do family devotions and pray together
- Explore and try new activities together
There are so many areas of our lives that are stretched when we are parents. While being a parent is the most rewarding experience it is also one of the most challenging. It feels like I am constantly making mistakes or doing/saying something that’s not edifying or encouraging to my kids. Yes, they know very well how to “push my buttons,” but that doesn’t mean I have to over react either. Thankful for my kids and the many lessons they teach me about parenting.
A Fresh & Clean House with the Help of Mr. Clean Liquid Muscle! #MrCleanMorePower
I LOVE it when my house smells fresh and is sparkly clean! Spring has been in the air with the 70 degree temperatures the last few days making me get excited about doing my Spring Cleaning! Thank you Mr. Clean and SheSpeaks for helping me tackle my cleaning this week. I always love it when I find great products that help me keep my house clean. Somehow our family manages to make a mess which means regular cleaning is a must in our home.
A few days ago an amazing package arrived on my front porch! I was thrilled with Mr. Clean’s new product and the kids were excited about the motion light inside the box (very fascinating)! Mr. Clean Liquid Muscle has 2.5x more cleaning power in every drop!
The kids were super excited to see how it works too! They are helping around the house doing more chores so they wanted to know if it worked (and if they could have the motion light for their own special project).
I’ve got my cleaning bucket, sponge, and a new bottle of Mr. Clean Liquid Muscle!
It had a wonderful fresh scent and lots of great bubbles! You only have to squeeze the bottle once per gallon of water because it automatically shuts off after the correct amount has been dispensed. The good news about it only squirting the amount I need is that the kids won’t waste it when it’s their turn to use it!
First area to tackle was the kids bathroom. I am not sure what happened when they were brushing their teeth this morning, but somehow toothpaste was spread from one end of the counter to the other. The kids bathroom seems to be the area I get the least excited about cleaning because I know as soon as they brush their teeth again or wash their hands the toothpaste and soap suds will be everywhere. One of these days they will figure out how to brush their teeth and only get the toothpaste on their toothbrushes! I guess I should be pleased that they are at least brushing their teeth even if the whole process is a little messy.
Not only is the toothpaste all over the counter and sink, but someone left the cap off the toothpaste! I am beginning to think they must have been doing a “toothpaste” craft, painting, or trying to use their creative juices with the amount of toothpaste I found on the counter this morning!!!
The first wipe with Mr. Clean Liquid Muscle took all the sticky globs of toothpaste right off the sink! Love it!!! It worked really well and still lots of suds too! I have used other cleaners on their sticky toothpaste mess and I had to really scrub to get it off. Mr. Clean Liquid Muscle took one swipe followed by a rinse and it was done in just of few seconds! So excited!
The kids sink is once again clean and sparkly! Let’s see how long it will last! At least it is good to know that Mr. Clean Liquid Muscle works amazing and quickly on the toothpaste messes the kids leave behind.
After finishing the kids bathroom I was able to get more of my Spring Cleaning done, including scrubbing down the kitchen cabinets, mopping the kitchen floor, cleaning the master bathroom and more! Thanks for making my cleaning easier Mr. Clean! Even my husband and kids commented on how clean, sparkly, and fresh smelling the house was when they came home! I am already looking forward to tackling a few more Spring Cleaning projects with Mr. Clean Liquid Muscle this week!

Birthday Celebrations
Happy Birthday to Brina & Karlie! We are so thrilled to be celebrating another great year with our sweet girls. Even though their birthday was a few days ago it has been a whirlwind of activities, fun, and celebrations so I am just now getting around to posting all the super fun stuff! The Happy Birthday banner was hung up in our kitchen over the sink the night before so they were greeted with it first thing in the morning as they went into the kitchen to eat breakfast!
Jake made the girls a delicious birthday breakfast treat to celebrate their birthday!!! He made them a yogurt cup topped with fresh blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries! Jake also made the girls ham and homemade hash browns.
The girls watching their sparkler candles while we sing “Happy Birthday” to them! We stuck the candles in their yogurt and fruit cups.
Brina very excited about her cool new bike!
Karlie ready to go for a ride on her new bike!

Birthday balloons always add a little fun to the big celebration day! They are still up and floating around in their rooms even though I picked them up before their birthdays!
Thames & Kosmos Air + Water Power
The girls are fascinated and focused on their first experiment with their Thames & Kosmos Air & Water Power Kit.
It was successful! 🙂
Brina and Karlie have been enjoying doing various science experiments, robotics, and more science fun. Grandpa and Grandma gave the girls a Thames & Kosmos Air + Water Power set for Christmas. The girls have really enjoyed putting it together and making it work. They are super excited to check out all the cool things they can build and run with air and water power. They are thrilled to learn about the law of physics and how air + water can power various items.
With this kit they can learn about Pneumatic Hydraulic Engines by building their own models which are powered by air and water pressure. They can build items with engines powered both by water jet propelled cars and hydro pneumo (air pressure + water pressure). There are 15 models including a cutting machine, truck, excavator, radar car, tank, antique car, helicopter, motorbike, backhoe, rocket car, forklift, roadster, propeller plane, and grinder.Dear Mom…
Dear Mom,
I love you Mom! Can you read to us? Skipper loved her bone. As I write this letter Skipper is looking at me. Can you play with me Mommy? I love to play. It is cold outside. I had a fun day. Love, Brina
I found this letter and picture one morning from my sweet Brina. These little gestures from my family makes my heart want to burst. Not every day is perfect or easy as a parent so seeing these sweet letters totally make my day brighter! In case your wondering, yes we read, played, and had fun together that day. Love my family!
A Bagel, Hot Chocolate, & Sweet Friend
I am truly blessed with amazing people in my life! Yesterday was a marathon day of running errands. One of the stops was to meet a friend briefly to drop off some goodies for a local Christmas Party for foster kids. Praying that those cute kids have an awesome party!
My sweet friend came bearing gifts, including hot chocolate and a bagel from Panera Bread! Yum! It was a cool rainy day and the hot chocolate was absolutely delicious. I ended up running errands until it was time to pick up the girls so the bagel was a perfect lunch treat on the run.
We all have had those crazy days with full schedules and numerous projects to tackle when someone does thoughtful act that makes your day 110 times better. Even though I know my friend, Ash, was extremely busy with everything she was tackling that day she was a huge beam of sunshine on a rainy day in mine. Ashley’s thoughtfulness reminded me of the multiple blessings in my life and how important it is to take time to make those around me feel appreciated. Thanks for the reminder sweet friend (and for the goodies)!
Jello Jigglers
The girls had a lot of fun making Jello Jigglers after school to share with their friends who were coming over after dinner. We had a great time doing this treat together while talking about memories, the girls day at school, and the fun we were anticipating having with our friends that evening.
I remember making Jello Jigglers when I was a little girl with my Great Grandma Vi so this activity brought back a lot of sweet memories of my Grandma Viola. It is wonderful being able to carry on this fun tradition with my girls too.
The girls had a wide variety of shapes and animals from birds, flowers, Mickey Mouse, hearts, bears, rabbits, and more. They had a blast choosing the cookie cutters and getting this special treat together to share with their friends. I would say it was a big hit because there were only a couple “jigglers” left by the end of the night. 🙂
A Room of Their Own – Brina & Karlie’s New Rooms
Brina’s new room after paint and carpet
Jake and I decided a few months ago that it was time the girls had their own rooms. As twins they have always shared their room (8 years). Even though the girls were born on the same day they couldn’t be more different. At first when we mentioned the possibility of them getting their own rooms one was excited while the other one was reluctant at the idea of getting her own room. One of the problems we were encountering, other than the normal messy room and no one admitting who made the mess, was that one of the girls needed more sleep, but couldn’t go to sleep at night because her sister who didn’t need as much sleep wouldn’t stop talking.
Karlie’s new room after paint and carpet
Since making the decision and starting the process of re-doing their rooms both girls started to get really excited about having their own space. They each picked out their own paint colors. Jake and I went through the colors with them and had to “approve” the chosen colors. We let them chose three different colors for their room. Jake and I are not professional painters and I am allergic to latex (which didn’t prove to be fun with all the latex in the paint), but we got through all the painting and re-carpeting in one piece. Both girls were super excited about their “new” rooms. We moved Brina into what used to be the “office” so we did her room first. After we moved Brina into her new room in the middle of August we started on Karlie’s room. The paint and carpet are done, but the rest of the room is still a work in progress.
Brina’s Colors
Main Color – Dazzling Daffodil
Outer Stripes – Aurora Orange
Inner Stripe – Orchid Rose
Brina’s yellow is a bright and cheerful color. As soon as we started painting on the walls she began giggling because she loved it so much. Her favorite colors are pink and orange which made good accents on the bright yellow walls. Karlie told Brina that whenever it is a rainy day the whole family is going to hang out in Brina’s room because it is looked so sunny in her room.
Karlie’s Colors
Main Color – Spring Green
Outer Stripes – Watermelon Smoothie
Inner Stripe – Cool Colbalt
Karlie was very patient as we worked on Brina’s room first. We got her room painted Labor Day weekend, but the carpet kept getting delayed. She never complained even though she was getting tired of sleeping in the living room. Karlie surprised me a little more with her colors; originally she was thinking of a red, white, and blue theme, but once we were at the store she choose a bright green color with a fun pink and blue accent. The best way I can think to describe the main color is it reminds me of “Key Lime Pie”. She was super excited to move into her new room and loves both her colors as well as her soft carpet.
Both girls picked out their three colors and helped pick out their carpet as well. We ended up agreeing on doing a Thatched Roof color of carpet for both of the girls rooms. They had a lot of fun picking out the colors, helping, watching, and now finally settling into their new rooms.
Jake came up with the idea of “posting a note” in each room. Once all the carpet and padding was removed we had the girls each write a note in both rooms on the floor so someday (hopefully many years from now) when we or someone else goes to replace the carpet in the house they will get to read about the little girls who once lived in the rooms.
Brina’s note in her room
It reads: 8-19-13 Hello, my name is Brina. I am 8. I have 2 goats, 2 turtles, 5 fish, and 1 dog. I am getting a new room. I have never had my own room before. The colors are dazzling daffodil, pink, and orange. My favorite colors are pink and orange.

The note says: Hi, my name is Karlie. I am Brina’s sister. I am 8 years old. I have 1 dog, 2 goats, 2 turtles, and 5 fish. I hope you like the room like Brina. I like the colors. Brina’s favorite colors are pink and orange. August 2013 – 8/18/13 at 6:14 pm
Karlie’s note on her floor
It reads: Hi, my name is Karlie. I am going to have my very own room. I have shared this room with my sister, Brina, for the first eight years of my life. My room colors are: Main Color – Spring Green, Outer Stripe – Watermelon Smoothie, and Inner Stripe – Cool Colbalt. I think I am going to like having my own room. I hope you like this room just as much as I do. Love, Karlie * 9/8/13

For those of you who know me well you know this project truly was a “labor of love” because I am not a fancy painter or decorator and I am allergic to latex (any paint drops on my skin or from washing brushes made me react). I am forever grateful for my husband and all his help as well as support throughout this whole process. The girls are thrilled and love their rooms. It is neat to see their personalities really start to pop and develop even more. I am thankful that we had the opportunity to do this special project as a family. Now if anyone has any “decorating” advice….let me know!
Yes, I am Still Here!
A big “THANKS” to all of you who have checked in with me to make sure everything is okay since it has been rather quiet on my blog the past few weeks! 🙂 Yes, I am still around. Summer was a fun, but a very busy time for our family. I think the four of us were only home together three weekends the entire summer break. We had a lot of travel and other activities going on. It got to the point where I had to make a decision on what my priorities were going to be and I chose to make the best of the last few weeks of summer break (and the first few of the new school year) by spending more time with my family.
God has been working in my heart and life over the past few months. A lot has been going on with our family, good stuff, however, even the best things take time and energy. A few weeks ago as I was being pulled in so many directions my husband kindly suggested that I “pick my priorities and let some of the other stuff go” at least for a little while until life calms down more. I took his advice and invested more of my energy into my family as the kids were gearing up to go back to school.
I have truly missed blogging and interacting with everyone online, but the extra time with my family was precious and the memories that were made during our time together was so worth it. While I hope to get back into more regular blogging I am going to try to take it easy and not stress if I don’t have a post up at least 6 days a week. It is my goal to post “regularly” just not necessarily “daily.”
Hope life has been treating all of you well! I am looking forward to sharing with you some of our recent activities and adventures soon. A lot has happened over the past few weeks! Thanks for hanging in there with me.
