  • Relationships: Characteristics of a Friend

Lily - Red & Orange Flower - Mother's Day Gift

    What Is a Friend?

    • A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be.
    • A friend is a living treasure, and if you have one, you have one of the most valuable gifts in life.
    • A friend is one who will always be beside you, through all the laughter, and through each and every tear.
    • A friend is the one thing you can always rely on; the someone you can always open up to; the one person who always believes in you in a way that no one else seems to.
    • A friend is a sanctuary.
    • A friend is a smile.
    • A friend is a hand that is always holding yours, no matter where you are, no matter how close or far apart you may be.
    • A friend is someone who is always there and will always-always-care.
    • A friend is a feeling of forever in the heart.
    • A friend is the one door that is always open.
    • A friend is the one to whom you can give your key.
    • A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be.

    – Collin McCarty

There are certain qualities in friends that truly stand out more than others.  Some of those characteristics are hard to find while others are more common.  What type of friend are you to others?  Do you stand out and have all or at least some of these characteristics above?

We are not called to be perfect every moment of each day, however, we should be reflecting qualities of positive characteristics in our lives.  We should be walking life with others.  Be real and sharing.  Let’s make sure we are investing in developing good character in ourselves and lasting friendships in our lives.

    1. Focusing on my Family not the “to do” list

I think it is important to share and encourage each other as we seek to improve our lives and the lives of those around us.  I want to live intentionally not just hope all my dreams and goals come true.  When I focus on small steps of improvement I am able to see results as I get closer to my goals.  Some weeks I get closer to the goals I have in my life and other weeks a take a few steps back (life happens, emergencies occur, people get sick).  Once the goals are written down and shared it provides a guideline for what I aim to accomplish this week.

    Why Share My Goals?

    • To keep me accountable
    • To share a piece of my life with you as I strive to be a better Child of God, Wife, Mom, Friend, Homemaker, Entrepreneur and the many other roles I have each week
    • To have my goals consistently written down so I can gauge progress more accurately
    • Create healthy habits in my life
    • To encourage you to share your goals with me as you continue to grown and learn

How did you do this week on your goals?  Feel free to share or link to your list of weekly goals.

The picture above is one that I created for my own purposes, however, The “SMART” acronym was originally coined 30 years ago by Peter Drucker in his classic work, Management by Results

  • Counting My Blessings: Week In Review

It was a great week with my family.  We had some good fun together while accomplishing a lot of little, but much needed tasks around the house and yard.  The girls have been enjoying their summer adventures too!  Love hearing about their days and what they have been learning at camp and the adventures they are enjoying.   Thankful for an opportunity to have an extra day with my family over the July 4th Holiday.

I want to be accountable to you so the following are snip-its of some of the things I am thankful for this past week.

Counting My Blessings – Week In Review:

Monday –Thankful for a great July 4th Holiday to celebrate our country, time with my family, and a chance to have an extra day at home to get some items done!

Tuesday – Thankful that Jake took the girls into summer camp so I could get into work earlier.  Also, grateful that I was able to get off work at lunch to pick up the girls and spend the afternoon with them.  We had a lot of fun hanging out together.

Wednesday – Thankful for Jake and the girls help getting some items done around the house.

Thursday – Thankful for an opportunity to spend extra time with extended family.  It wasn’t on the schedule until last night, but my Grandma Willa was in town visiting so we had an impromptu dinner with Grandma, my brother & his family, Aunt Pat, and my cousins and their families.  We had a great meal, the kids played well, and a good time of catching up.  Grateful for an opportunity to see family.

Friday – Thankful for the girls summer camp and the adventures that they have been able to enjoy this summer.  They met a lot of neat people this week and was able to get in a lot of biking time (also the importance of staying hydrated on hot summer days in South Carolina).  Both girls were grateful for the camel backs this week.

Saturday – Thankful for some time to catch up on projects around the house and yard.  Grateful for Jake and all he does for our family.

Sunday – Thankful for the freedom to worship and fellowship with other believers.

What are you thankful for today?  I encourage you to take the time to write down a few blessings that you have in your life today.  It will help cheer you up and turn your focus on the amazing blessings you encounter each day.

  • You Know it is Going to Be An Interesting Day When …

You look down and you are wearing not only two different shoes, but two entirely different colored shoes!  Not that long ago I woke up with my alarm (5:00 am), got dressed and headed downstairs to go yoga before waking up the rest of the family and heading off to work.  It was one of those mornings I had to drag myself out of bed.  I didn’t “want” to go do yoga, but knew that it would be good for me.

As I was setting up my mat and yoga items I happened to look down at my feet and noticed that I was wearing 1 pink and 1 black flipflop.  Oops!  Granted I did get dressed in the dark as to not wake my sleeping husband, but it was a sure sign I was more tired than I realized when I didn’t even notice I was wearing two different shoes for several minutes.

It was a rather busy day, but I survived.  Doing yoga that morning even with two different shoes was the right choice.  I don’t always make good choices, but if the worse thing that happens in my day is wearing two different colored shoes I am doing ok.  Who knows maybe I will start a new trend.  At least it is something funny to look at and laugh about.  And I made it out of the house with two coordinating shoes that day (I double checked before heading into work)!

  • Relationships: What Type of Friend Am I?

Lily - Red & Orange Flower - Mother's Day Gift

Sometimes we are lucky enough to meet a person who stands out among all other people as being extremely special who knows what we are thinking about.  Who is happy for us at all times.  Who is always there to talk.  Who cares about us selflessly.  Who is always truthful with us.  Sometimes we are lucky enough to meet someone who is extremely wonderful and for me that person is you my dear friend.  – Susan Polis Schutz

We’ve all heard the saying that “friends are worth their weight in gold”.  Absolutely!  I agree friends are priceless and a great blessing in our lives.  There are people who have a multitude of friends while others have a handful of really close friends.

If you had only a few seconds to think of your list of friends.  Who would stand out?  Who would come to your mind first?  We can easily point out who those true blue and deep friends are pretty quickly.

Are you this type of friend to others?  Who have we taken the time to invest in lately?  Do we stand out?  Are we the person our friends call on when they are excited and want to celebrate or when they hit a rough patch?

  • Relationships: Reflecting on Memories

    Sunflower / Yellow Flower

    • Across the fields the summer sun
    • Is shining, and the breeze
    • Flows gently through the trees
    • Like waves upon the summer seas.
    • The wild flowers all along the fence
    • Are dancing in the sun.
    • The bees are buzzing through the fields. . .
    • I’ll bet their work is fun.
    • Look, there’s a path upon the hill;
    • Please come and walk with m.
    • For overtop the hill and down,
    • A meadow we will see.
    • For in the meadow there’s a brook
    • That I once waded through,
    • And in the meadow there are flowers
    • Of every shade and hue.
    • Come walk, with me along that brook
    • And share this day with me.
    • As carefree children once again
    • We live in memory.

    – Bonnie Gaunt

Our lives are sprinkled with a variety of  memories.  Some of those memories bring a smile to our face while others bring a tear of sadness to our eyes.  Memories can come rushing back when one or more of our senses are spiked such as a familiar place, smell, or sound.

When we walk along a stream or visit a familiar area with a family member or friend we get a glance into the past.  It’s important to take the time to remember those good times.  Relax in a quiet walk with someone dear to us.  Taking the time to laugh at the good times and great memories we have shared over the years.  Life goes by quickly and no one is guaranteed another day, but we have today so let’s make the best of what we have with those we love.

  • Relationships: Now & Forever

    Karlie - Red Rose Flower

    Forever

When I look in your eyes and see your bright smile and feel your comforting touch, when I hear all the love in those warm, caring words that encourage and cheer me so much.  There’s a feeling I have that “forever” is ours, that, no matter the season or weather,  Our hearts will be filled with the same kind of magic and love that first brought us together. – Emily Matthews

A great reminder for those of us who are married.  Our spouses know us better than anyone else.  They know how to make us laugh and push our buttons.  There will be days when life is smooth and bright while other days may have a few storm clouds brewing in the distance.

Take the time to talk with your spouse. Share your heart.  Spend time doing projects and fun activities together.  Go on a date.  Relax, snuggle, and share a hug.  It doesn’t matter if you have been married for a few days or many years investing in your partner is important.

  • School: Brina’s 5th Grade Awards! Way to GO BRINA!

    Karlie & Brina's 5th Grade Awards

    Brina’s 5th Grade Awards!

Brina and Karlie had their 5th grade Awards Ceremony on Friday, May 27, 2016.  Jake and I knew the girls did really well this year, worked hard, and got decent grades, but we were still surprised at how well they did.  Thankful for all their hardwork regarding school.  It has obviously paid off and they have learned a lot throughout the year.  They both had awesome teachers which is always beneficial for the kids too.

We did not even save seats for the girls (we didn’t realize that they would need to sit with us after graduation), but it didn’t matter because they barely even sat down before they were called back up on stage to receive their next award.  They did fantastic this year.  It was a tough year, but it was worth all their effort!

All there teachers were excellent and encouraged them to learn a lot while making learning fun for the students!  Their Homeroom Teachers, Gifted & Talented Teacher, Reading Teacher, and STEM Club Coaches, Library Leader, Chorus Director, Safety Patrol Leader, Beta Club Leader, the Administration Leadership Team and more  were all good about communicating with the parents which is always key in helping the kids be successful.   Thankful for all the teachers and all energy they put into our kids this school year.

We are VERY PROUD of the hard work Brina put forward this year and the amount she was able to accomplish throughout her 5th grade year!  The girls have the biggest class in the school so it is a huge honor to get these awards.  Way to go chickie-a-dee!!!

  • Relationships: Through the Eyes of Children

     Sunflower / Yellow Flower

If you look at the world with the eyes of a child,

There is joy in the simplest thing,

From the green of a leaf on the earliest tree

To the curve of a bird on the wing.

If you look at the world with the eyes of a child,

There are miracles filling each day,

From the grass which mysteriously sways in the wind

To the gold in the sun’s friendly ray.

If you look at the world with the eyes of a child,

There is wonder beyond any measure,

From the stars and the moon in the evening sky

To the sparkle of a dewdrop treasure.

     – Maryjane Tonn

I love how children take such joy and delight in the everyday things of life.  From a babies giggle to sprinkles on top of the ice cream cone to a handful of cheerful yellow dandelions picked to be displayed in glory on the counter.  The little moments of happiness and sheer gladness over the simple yet everyday tasks or items in life.  Learning how to use or do something for the first time brings a great happiness to a child.

As an adult there is so much my children and other children can remind me.  There is so many blessings all around us.  Too often I take those good things that God gives me for granted.  I know I don’t take enough time to focus on the blessings and goodness that I see around me.

Being around kids especially small ones for extended periods of time is exhausting yet rewarding.  Their energy and excitement is contagious.  I am thankful for my kids and the little ones that I have had the opportunity to spend time with because they remind me of the true treasures in life that I have been given.  Thank you little ones!

  • Counting My Blessings: Week In Review

It was a week packed full of a lot of emotions.  With the girls wrapping up at a school they have been attending the past 7 years it has been quite a stepping stone for us.  We are grateful to all the teachers and administration at Crosswell Elementary for the amount of time, energy, and attention they have invested in our girls education.  They have made a positive and lasting impression on our kids.  Wish we could take some of the amazing teachers with us to Middle school.  We are excited to see what Middle School will bring and know that the kids will probably adjust quicker and better than at least their Mom because with them moving up a school their growing up seems more real.  Love my girls and very proud of what they have accomplished over the past year!     There was so much to be thankful for last week.

I want to be accountable to you so the following are snip-its of some of the things I am thankful for this past week.  Counting My Blessings – Week In Review:

Monday –Thankful to have the laundry room renovation started and that we were still able to get the laundry done so none of us have to run around wearing dirty clothes!

Tuesday – Thankful for the opportunity to spend some time with the girls after school that didn’t include doing a bunch of homework.  We even had a few extra minutes to do a rapid quick clean up around the house and read some more of our books together.  LOVE catching both of the girls reading independently on their own during free time (for those who know our family you know that for one of our kids this is a really big deal)!

Wednesday – Thankful for time after work to spend with other Mom’s at school prepping for the kids 5th grade Graduation Celebration Party.   We were able to get a lot accomplished and organized during our time together.

Thursday – Thankful for Brina’s hard work on her “Cupcakes on the Rise” Science Fair Project because we were able to see her accept a 1st Place Trophy, Medals, Certificate, and Cash Prize (we had no idea there was a cash prize as well) for the Regional Science Fair!  Very proud of our Brina Bee!

Friday – Thankful for an opportunity to watch the girls Graduation and Awards Ceremony!  They did fantastic and both kids received numerous awards, medals, pins, certificates, trophies and other cool awards for all that they had accomplished throughout this year.  Also, Karlie received a trophy for getting all A’s her entire Elementary School years.  Super proud of these kids and the effort they put into their learning.  Praying they continue to have the love of learning as they get older!

What are you thankful for today?  I encourage you to take the time to write down a few blessings that you have in your life today.  It will help cheer you up and turn your focus on the amazing blessings you encounter each day!
