Gift Giving
Book: “Bob Books Sight Words Collection” by Bobby Lynn Maslen
My parents gave the girls this set of books “Bob Books Sight Words Collection – Kindergarten and First Grade” by Bobby Lynn Maslen when they were just starting to read. What I really enjoyed about these books is that they were “simple” from the words to the pictures. The words were easy for them to sound out as they were beginning to read and the pictures were captivating enough to get their attention but were not so amazing that they couldn’t focus on the words. As the girls were learning to read it was great pulling out the books and having them read because they were so excited to read a big book all by themselves. This set of books are for Kindergarten and First Grade. The first few books are pretty easy and gradually get harder as they go through them. I think our girls have gone through them several times now. If you have a child who is just learning how to read these books are short, easy, and give them a quick reading accomplishment victory.
Heart Reflections: Gifts from Above
A few weeks ago I was speaking to a friend who received a gift anonymously. As we were talking I mentioned to her that we have been recipients of such gifts in our lives as well. I can think of several times God used someone in our lives to deliver special gift from above. During those times I had been praying for something specific and it came through a completely mysterious giver.
A desire to show appreciation.
After receiving the gift I would often find myself racking my brain thinking…..who could have given such an amazing gift? Did they know that I have been praying specifically about this particular item? Most of the times I never even shared the need with anyone other than God. In these situations I often find myself really wanting to know who it was that delivered the gift so I could say thank you in person or write a thank you note to them. I want to express my deep gratitude for what they did and the impact they made on my life. However, it is during those times that I realize that they don’t want me to know who it was because they didn’t do it for their glory or praise, they did it for God’s glory. It provides an opportunity for me to give God ALL the glory because only He could have instrumented such an amazing answer to my prayer. He really does hear our prayers. Whether you are going through a financial, physical, emotional time or other need, he hears and cares for you.
Directing my praise to the one who holds my life in his hands.
What do you do when you receive an mysterious answer to your prayer? Give all the thanks and credit to God. He worked through another person to directly answer your prayer. Glory in the goodness and blessings he continually bestows on us even in the midst of a difficult situation. We don’t deserve anything yet he longs for us to have a personal and ongoing relationship with him. Pray for that person who was used by God to meet your need at the time. You may never know who it was on this side of heaven but there may come a time when they have a need that God allows you to help answer.
What am I doing to help others?
On the flip side of the coin how often to I get those nudges from God to help someone or call or write or do something completely anonymous but don’t follow through with it. God can use you and me to deliver these amazing gifts to others. The gifts come in all shapes, sizes and varieties from an encouraging note, listening, phone calls, financial, physical help, and so much more (there really is no limit to the width and depth of these gifts). We may not know what is going on in their hearts and lives. They may be asking God for something specific or need to hear a word of encouragement and he gives you the opportunity to deliver His gift to them. I cannot tell you how large of a blessing and encouragement these gifts from God are to people. When you have a nudge or feel called to do something for someone take a moment and do it. You may be a tremendous blessing to a specific need that they have in their lives.
But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Matthew 6:3-4

Book: “The God Pocket” by Bruce Wilkinson
I recently finished reading The God Pocket by Bruce Wilkinson. About a month ago I finished his You Were Born For This book so this was a great one to read next because it went into more detail on his concept of “The God Pocket”. Throughout the book he uses the phrase “He Owns It. You carry it. Suddenly, everything changes” which means you have a certain amount of money (in addition to what you set aside for tithing and offering) that you place in a special place in your wallet or envelope and you dedicate it to God. When you feel led by God (or nudged) then you give the amount God has laid on your heart to the person you have been directed to.
The God Pocket is extra money that you have set aside to deliver a financial blessing to those whom come to your attention. The money is no longer yours to use or borrow from once it is dedicated to God. It is important that you pray for discernment for who the money should be given to in your God Pocket. Sometimes you’ll be led the day you put it into the pocket other times it may be days, weeks, or months before the person who you are asked to give it to comes across your path.
Wilkinson shares a variety of stories about people who have experience the blessing of delivering their God Pocket funds. Many of those people have been blessed through their extra giving, although it is not guarantee that if you give extra money away that you are promised the exact amount or more in return from God. For example the author used this following verse:
Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed. – Proverbs 17:19
This is a wonderful verse and it does say that the Lord will repay for the deed, however, it does not say that he will repay financially or even while we are on this earth. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven…. Matthew 5:12 I think the concept of giving to others is awesome as long as we do not do it with the expectation of being repaid or over abundantly rewarded for our effort here on earth. We may see some benefits of sharing with others including mentorship opportunities, sharing the good news, and the blessing of knowing that God has allowed you to share a miracle with someone who was hurting or in need. It is the most valuable when we give from the heart while giving ALL the credit to God. It is not called “The Me Pocket” it is called “The God Pocket” for that specific reason. You are carrying it to be a blessing to someone and allow God to work in their hearts not to take the praise for yourself.
The author walks you through seven steps for delivering “The God Pocket” funds:
- Decide and pray regarding the amount you will put into “The God Pocket”.
- Devote the money directly to God.
- Deposit the devoted amount into your God Pocket.
- Depend on God to lead you to the exact person He wants you to give the gift to.
- Deliver God’s funds to the recipient
- Declare who the true giver of the funds is, transfer the all credit for the funds directly to God
- Disciple the person who you have given the God Pocket funds to so they can start a relationship or strengthen their relationship with God and they may in return deliver a God Pocket to another person in need.
The book is short and can be read pretty quickly. Overall I like the concept the author was trying to get across to the readers. In a couple places the author pushed a little bit regarding using his specifically design “God Pockets” and even gave a few examples of how people used the ones he designed. That’s okay if you want to use them but the point isn’t if you use a plain envelope or a fancy leather God Pocket, it is that you are willing to be used by God to bring blessings to those around you. I think it is a great idea to prayfully seek out opportunities to minister to others in need as long as the credit is given to God.

Heart Reflections: Giving from the Heart
The other day I had two pieces of left over wrapping paper from a baby shower gift that I gave to the girls to use. They were busy for about thirty minutes in the dining room talking and wrapping their goodies. Later I found out they had wrapped up a few small toys to give to a friend that they heard was moving because his parents were having financial problems. Now the girls didn’t really understand much about what type of the financial problems but they did understand that their friend was having to sell some of his toys because of the move and family situation. Without any prompting on mine or Jake’s part the girls carefully selected some special toys he would like (silly bands, match box cars, pencils, stickers, and a couple more items), wrapped them up, and brought the gifts in for us to see.
It was only when they brought us the completely wrapped gifts that we found out who they were planning on giving them to. My heart overflowed with joy to know that the girls were willing to part with a few treasured toys to help a friend in need. They were not just giving any toy, they were trying to find some of their favorite toys to give away.
How often to I unconditionally give of my best to others? Do I give from the heart or is it to receive notice or out of the feeling of obligation? The most wonderful gift comes from the heart with no strings attached much like the greatest gift we have ever been given. I am thankful for a Savior who gave his life for me and for girls who remind me of what it is like to give generously from the heart to those around us.
Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God
which He has given you. – Deuteronomy 16:17
Teaching Our Children: How to Celebrate Special Days (Wrapping Gifts & Writing Cards)
When a celebration is drawing near whether it is a Birthday or Holiday or Baby Shower or Wedding or just something fun the girls get excited. They LOVE wrapping gifts and writing cards. It is cute watching them pick out the perfect card, beautiful wrapping paper, special balloon, and diligently work on putting together their surprise. Sure they use a lot more tape, wrapping paper and the process can be messy but think about all the amazing opportunities you have to teach your child during it.
- The Joy of Giving to others
- How to wrap a gift with wrapping paper, in a gift bag, and adding the additional bling (ribbons, small gifts, etc…) to it
- Hand Eye Coordination Skills with the cutting, taping, and folding
- Creativity with wrapping and writing the card
- Thinking of others
- Measuring
- Shapes
- Sharing with someone else
- Sizes and how they fit into a bag or how much paper they will need
- And Many More
I let them each pick out their own wrapping paper to use. It was a looked a little more like “Christmas” Holiday wrapping paper but that’s what they wanted and it was their gift to give away. As you can see she picked out a special “treat” gift as well! I am amazed at how much more efficient they have become even in the last year with wrapping. Yes, we still have the occasional – “Mom, I didn’t cut the wrapping paper big enough” but overall they are getting better at the process as a whole. (I’ve even had problems not cutting the paper big enough!)
Many times the girls will write not only a note in a card to someone but also draw and color a picture for them. They really do put a lot of heart and thought into the cards and gifts. It is really neat to see how much they care for others and enjoy doing it. To them wrapping and card writing is almost as good (maybe better some days) than doing a craft. Thankful for their willingness to be a blessing to others both family and friends.

Living on a Budget: Creative Cash (September Update)
September is my eighth month tracking my Creative Cash. What is Creative Cash? Creative Cash is finding ways to come up with extra cash to share with others as well as work on our current goal. I am working part time, a stay at home Mom, and wear many other hats from day to day, however, I feel that it is important to save money for our family by using coupons and buying items on sale but to earn a little money to help with the extra expenses and to share with others. The extra amount I bring in on top of the work is what I call “Creative Cash” which means finding ways to make money creatively or with items and talents I have already. I plan to continue this goal for the remaining months of the year. Despite the many financial obstacles that we have faced as a family we have been blessed with so much. My husband and I believe it is important to be accountable with our finances and give to others.
Explanation: The creative cash will be made throughout the entire month through various endeavors. As it comes in the money is placed into our savings account and withdrawn at the end of the month so it can be split. It is my goal to make at least $100 extra a month to help with our goals as well as share with others. At the end of the month the money will be split 50 / 50 with half going towards our current goal we are working on (which at the moment is paying down debt) and the other half going to charity.
To be honest September was not a great month, however, it was better then August. In August I wasn’t able to do any extra activities to generate creative cash; our family had several out of town trips, guests, events, and a lot of other activities in August that took up the extra time I had available. I am thankful that we have had the opportunity to travel together as a family and create many great new memories, however, the creative cash has been effected by it. Although life is still busy we are at least home more now giving me the flexibility to focus on this goal as well as other ones. I anticipate October being another busy month but now that the girls are back in school life will once again return our new “normal” and I hope to come closer to meeting this goal. Thankfully I was able to save some extra cash even though I did not reach my my goal of $100. I want to share with you the ways we did it so if you are looking for ways to make a little extra creative cash for your family hopefully we can be an inspiration in getting your creative juices flowing:
- $7.97 – Items sold on Ebay (after fees): The all the items sold were coupons. I encourage you to look around at some of the coupons you get the mail, newspapers, magazines, in your stockpile, or other places and if you will not have the opportunity to use them then consider selling them for a little extra creative cash.
- $39.00 – Other miscellaneous amounts earned (rebates, returns, cash back, extra money, etc…) that was added to my stash for the month. Most of the cash this month was from a rebate check I received.
It was a harder month to set the extra aside because it was very busy and I was not able to participate in as many extra creative cash activities. The good news is despite the crazy schedule I was able to get a few dollars of creative cash. September’s “Creative Cash” total was $46.97 which means $23.48 extra that goes towards our current goal (saving for 3 to 6 month Emergency Fund) and $23.49 goes towards charity. I didn’t hit my $100 goal this month. It has been really busy with school being out part of the month and traveling with the family. I am happy that I was able to contribute something this month and every little bit helps us get a little closer to our goals as well as helps others along the way. I have a plan of action on ways to earn creative cash in October so stayed tuned, hopefully, it will be another month where we can get closer to our goal and share with others. Each month I do a variety activities to accomplish this goal, the items above are just the ones I did specifically in September. I look forward to sharing more of the things that work well for our family as I do them in the upcoming months.
I will share with you the challenges, successes, and updates as I go through this journey so you can keep me accountable or even go through it with me by participating and sharing your story. Taking the extra time to find ways to help our family as well as invest in the lives of others is important to us. I hope that we have been able to encourage you to find ways to come up with some creative cash for your household as well. Obviously, each situation and family is unique so decide what works for you and go for it! Do you know of another way to earn creative cash? I would love to hear your idea!
Living on a Budget is a series of ways our family uses a budget to help keep us accountable with our finances. Life doesn’t always go as planned. We have used some of the ideas I will be sharing for years while others are ones we are just starting to implement as we continue finding ways to be creative and have fun with what we have been given. Having a plan in place allows us the freedom to be smart with what we have been given, get more creative when it is a tight (week, month, year or a season) and when necessary live a much more simplified life. A budget helps us stay on track so we have more opportunities to enjoy the many blessings we have been given as well as share what we have with others. There is so much more to life than having all the stuff. We may not have the newest or greatest items in our house, we drive used cars, and wear hand-me-down clothing…..however, if our family is taken care of and have love for each other and others we have more than all the riches in the world.
