• Travel & Vacation: Traveling through MySore, India (and a Couple Small Villages)

Sometimes the only home and shelter people had was under a tarp with several other family members.

Earlier this year Jake was in India working for a few weeks and I had the opportunity of traveling over there to meet him.  After his final week of work we went to spend some time with his cousin and took a road trip with them.  Over the next few weeks I will sharing more snapshots of our time in India.  India left a special mark on my heart.  It was an amazing experience!

Sign in MySore, India showing the way to the local places – MySore Palace, Zoo, Chamundi Hills, Airport, and MySore City Corporation

Houses in a small village that we passed through, even those these are a step up from a tent shelter it still breaks my heart seeing these homes.  Our driver stopped briefly to ask for directions. It was during this brief stop I realized that India has many different dialects even from town to town and even though we were only a short distance from where we were going it took awhile to find someone who knew which direction to point us.

I was really surprised at the amount of trash that littered the sides of the roads in India.  Some times you would see piles of trash that with people and animals digging through it to find food, supplies, or items they could use or sell.

Fresh Pineapple anyone….only 5 rupees (approximately 9 cents in US currency).  Some of the pineapples I saw were a little smaller then the ones we see in our grocery store but for 9 cents you could get quite a few for the price of one pineapple in the United States.

Can you see the bicycle underneath all the fresh coconuts?!  Pretty sure he is going to push that bike because it would be impossible to ride with all the coconuts. Behind the bike you can see coconuts that he has cracked open and the shells laying on the ground.  It is very fascinating to watch them break open a coconut, they basically take a huge mashedy knife and chop open the coconut.  It’s hard to see with the window glare but the ground all around that area is covered with dry coconut pieces…wonder how expensive it would be to buy “coconut mulch” in the United States?

Guy carrying a mattress on his head.  It amazes me the amount of stuff they carry on their heads.  You would think their necks would be so stiff.

Cows walking along the side of the road.  These are not your typical Kansas grass and corn fed beef cattle.  In India there are not always large grassy areas for the cows to graze so it is common to see their ribs.  You will often find cattle looking for small patches of grass and occasionally you will see them rummaging through the trash on the side of the road looking for food.

Families from the local village washing their laundry in the river.

After washing all the clothes in the river they lay them out to dry on the rocks.

It was fascinating to see a lot of the countryside of India.  We passed through towns and small villages.  There was always something interesting to see as we drove through the area.  Their fresh fruit looked delicious but I am not sure how much I would like washing my clothes in the river and drying them on the rocks, the wash machine is more efficient.  These pictures bring back a lot of memories.  I am thankful for the opportunity to see India and already looking forward to the next visit.

  • Travel & Vacation: King Fisher Airlines

Delayed!  King Fisher Airlines – our flight from Hyderabad to Bangalore, India

We had the opportunity to visit Jake’s cousin and his family while we were over in India.  They were staying in Bangalore so we booked our tickets in advance to fly out to see them.  We were flying from Hyderabad to Bangalore and back.

Sometimes timing just isn’t right when it comes to flying!  The week before we were suppose to fly to Bangalore Jake got a phone call from KingFisher Airlines saying our flight had been changed……we would now be flying out at a different time and arriving in another city in India (nowhere even near Bangalore).  Thankfully we were able to get it worked out and they got us on a plane that was actually going to Bangalore.  There was less than 20 people on the entire flight.   KingFisher had all their bank accounts froze by the government for not paying their bills and they had consolidated all flights to conserve costs.

We ended up making it to Bangalore safely on KingFisher after several flights changes and delays but we decided it would be better to fly another airline back to Hyderabad since KingFisher wasn’t doing hardly anymore flights!  Plus when we flew back we would have to arrive on time for a connecting flight back to home to USA.  Good thing we changed airlines because when we flew back to Hyderabad a few days later all the flights with KingFisher were canceled.  I felt bad for the employees and anyone with tickets with the airline, but what can you do when an airline goes bankrupt!  The airline staff were really nice but from the reports we had heard they hadn’t been paid for several weeks due to the financial problems the airline was having.

On the way back we flew Indigo airlines and they were really great (no cancellations, delays, or problems at all).   Considering Jake and I were in 12 airports throughout our travels to and from India and this was the only major hiccup we really can’t complain.  Thankfully we were able to work out all the little hiccups and everything went pretty smoothly.

  • Travel & Vacation: Shilparamam Park in Hyderabad, India

Entrance to Shilparamam Park.  It was pretty close to where Jake was staying in Hyderabad, India.

    Water fountain in the park

Hyderabad’s version of the duck boats!  Not sure I would want to go splashing around in the water though.

Not sure about the wiring in the park!  This was a pretty common sight in the various places we visited.  I am sure Jake’s cousin who is an electrician would have something to say about this one, ha!

Jake patiently waiting on the bridge for me to catch up!

Peaceful pond full of duck boats looks so pretty.

Cow with its horns painted blue and all decked up pulling a cart with items they plan to sell at the market place

Huge elephant statue you walk under to get to another part of the park.

This was interesting…..in the park they had a section which was a museum that told some of the history of Hyderabad, India and trades found in the area but they did it using all props.

Sankranthi Festival Display – outside props that were part of the museum portion of the park.   I loved the bamboo fence, it was really pretty!

The largest patch of green grass I saw in Hyderabad!  It was a field for concerts inside the park. Grass was not something you seen a lot of in the part of town where we were located. I bet the cows, goats, and other livestock I seen on the streets going through trash to find something to eat would have loved a chance to nibble on this grass!

Cool waterfall in the park….the smell reminded me of Reedy River at Falls Parks.  Beautiful but not ideal swimming or splashing around in water.

Watching a group of people in the park play a party game.  It kind of looked similar to “Duck, Duck, Goose” or “Musical Chairs”  They were having a lot of fun!

Elephant fountain in the park.  The bottom row of fountains are elephants spraying out water through their noses.  We were told that elephants were a symbol of “good luck” so you see them often.  Although we have been told various stories as to why they are good luck and what type of luck, not sure which is accurate or if there are just several stories that go along with the elephant symbol.

“Living Rock Gallery” inside the park.  The rocks have plaques on them explaining their symbolizism and place of honor.  I have heard of rock gardens but never a living rock garden so it was something different that I haven’t seen before.

If you pause for even a split second or happen to look in the general direction of someone’s shop they will rush out to greet you and try to get you to look at the items they have for sale.  This guy was trying to get us to buy his fabric.  They did not hestitate to sale you anything from rugs, to flowers, pottery, clothes, knick knacks, bangles, spices, and much more!  Most people were ok when you said “No, thank you” but there were a few who would literally follow you around asking you to look, touch, and buy their items.  You could spend an entire day going from shop to shop and having them sell you their goods if you wanted to, thankfully I am not a big shopper and Jake had already purchased a couple items for the kids before I arrived.
