• Counting My Blessings: Week In Review

It was a busy week, but we had a lot of fun.  The girls came into work with me first thing in the morning for a little bit.  They helped unlock the doors, turn on lights, and get set up for the day before spending time working on their summer workbooks for some time before I took them into camp.  They did a Music & Technology camp in the morning and a Rube Goldberg creative experiments in the afternoon.  It was super neat seeing what cool creations they developed over the course of the week.

I want to be accountable to you so the following are snip-its of some of the things I am thankful for this past week.

Counting My Blessings – Week In Review:

Monday –Thankful for an opportunity to spend some time chatting with the girls on the way to work and their help getting everything set up for the day.

Tuesday – Thankful to have an chance to see and hear all the neat things the girls are learning and creating in their week at Summer Camp.

Wednesday – Thankful for a dentist near home, that gets me in for an early appointment, and that I didn’t have any cavities or items that need to be done! Yay!

Thursday – Thankful for the girls curious and inquisitive minds.  They are not afraid to ask questions so they can learn more from people in various areas.

Friday – Thankful for some quiet one-on-one time with Jake.  It was nice to relax, catch up, chat, and spend some time together.  Grateful for his thoughts and for being a sounding board regarding my crazy ideas.  He brings peace, calm, and great insight to areas that am I trying to figure out.

Saturday – Thankful for an opportunity to spend time my family!  We got a lot of accomplished, but also had fun together!

Sunday – Thankful for the freedom to attend church, learn, and grow.  Grateful for a refreshing and much needed moments with my family.

What are you thankful for today?  I encourage you to take the time to write down a few blessings that you have in your life today.  It will help cheer you up and turn your focus on the amazing blessings you encounter each day.

  • Travel & Vacation: Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin Resort (Orlando, FL)

Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort Hotel

    Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort

Our “Home Away from Home” during our stay in Orlando was at the Walt Disney Swan & Dolphin Resort.  We didn’t spend a large amount of time actually in our room, although it was nice to crash some place comfortable every night after a busy day of exploring.  Our room (I think each room had the same) had a mini-refrigerator and plenty of space to put food and snacks.

We did all our breakfasts and dinners (except one) in our hotel room.  For our lunches we packed sandwiches to take with us in our backpacks so we wouldn’t have to stop and eat.  I shared a few tidbits about earlier resort and the neat pools they have on the resort.  The only thing that really bothered the girls about the resort was that the fish on the signs and around the hotel did not actually look like a dolphin (something they pointed out to me on multiple occasions).  They still loved it though!

Fun jungle gym.  Great place to vent out any extra energy the kids may have had.

    P1370694c

The ducks were very friendly.  We were walking on the sidewalk when this duck decided to take a stroll with us.

Waiting with smiles for the bus to arrive.  Sometimes we didn’t wait very long and other days it took longer before the bus arrived.

I had fun hanging out with the girls while Jake was in his conference!

Wild crew.  Not sure how the girls sustained all their energy throughout the days and late into the evenings.  We had a blast!

The girls were standing in the walkway for our hotel.  It was really beautiful at night.

Our balcony overlooked this walkway outside of our hotel.

    P1130077c

It was mesmerizing watching all the lights change colors.

    P1130078c

It was very relaxing to sit out on the balcony at night, listen to the music from below, and watch the different lights fade in and out.

    Pretty trees….

    P1130080c

Several nights the kids would eat there dinner on the balcony so they could watch the lights.

    P1130083c

You could even smell some of the great food from the restaurants nearby as you relaxed on the balcony.

    P1130091c

I don’t know if it was the pretty lights, music, smell of good food, or the fact we were sitting down after walking around all day, but we spent a good bit of time hanging out on our balcony every night as everyone relaxed for the evening and got showers done before hitting the bed.

Goodbye Orlando….until next time!  We had a great trip!  Many fun activities happened and memories were made.  Now it’s time to head on home!

  • Travel & Vacation: Riding Around Disney on Buses, Monorails, and Boats (Orlando, FL)

    P1380533c

    Relaxing on the monorail

While at Disney we spent time riding around on the various transportation systems.  The girls had fun going on the boats, monorails, and buses throughout the week.  At each location the girls had fun collecting the various transportation cards.  All you have to do is ask the driver or one of the workers for them.  Many times the driver would give them several trading cards at one time.  The only place they didn’t always have the cards was on the buses. They did get some neat ones and have fun collecting them.  I am not sure how many they collected throughout the week, however, they had quite a stack.

When we arrived at the hotel we parked the van in the parking lot and never went in it again until it was time to come home so we spent the entire week getting from place to place on the Disney transportation vehicles.  It was a neat experience for the girls and we met a lot of great people throughout our trips to and fro.  It was nice to not have to drive everywhere plus we saved on parking and gas.

  • Relaxing and Reading

Reading and Tepee Social Studies Project

    Relaxing and reading!

One of the best parts of having a relaxing Saturday morning is having extra time to read.   This is what I saw recently when walked into Brina’s room!   Brina was catching up on a pile of Berestain Bears books.  Jake and Karlie were checking something out in the World Book Encyclopedia.  The girls love books.  It makes my heart happy to walk into the room and see the kids reading.

    P1150789c

Relaxing at the hotel and watching the traffic for a few minutes while we figure out our evening plans!

We arrived at our next stop Reston, Virginia!  Thankfully, it wasn’t too far to drive from Colonial Williamsburg and the traffic was really good.  We had reserved our hotel room in advance at Weston, however, by the time we arrived they didn’t have any more of our size rooms so we got free upgrade to a suite with two rooms and a refrigerator which was really nice.

    P1150792c

So happy to be hanging out with these 3 people, my sweet family!

We finally decided on Clydes restaurant after walking through the downtown area.  It was a nice family restaurant and we were seated in the western style area with lots of horse memorabilia and pictures so they girls thought it was great!

  • Weekend Getaway!

Weekend Getaway to Hot Springs, North Carolina

Beautiful Day for a road trip with my Handsome Man!

Jake and I were able to getaway for a weekend while the girls were at church camp!  It was nice to spend some time relaxing together.  We were able to chat and have some one-on-one time without any interruptions for a solid weekend.  One of the best parts about where we went is that no cell phones, email, or internet work so there were less distractions!  We even had our first couples massage which was so very relaxing!

    P1150428c

Drinking my morning coffee while Jake makes breakfast!  I am so spoiled.  Grateful for a husband that cooks!

    P1150435c

My date for the weekend!  Love you Babycake!

    P1070549c

We rarely take pictures together so we snapped one after our couples massage at the Old Red Bridge in Hot Springs, NC!

    P1070535c

Our home away from home for the weekend!

    P1150423c

We went to the Hot Springs Log Cabins, it was so nice and peaceful in the rocker on the front porch.  The only thing you could hear were the birds!

We know how to bring in the summer and celebrate!  It’s going to be a busy one so having a weekend together was a true treat!  It was awesome to truly get away from it all!   Thankful for opportunities to spend with him.  He truly is my best friend and the love of my life.  I am blessed!

  • Vacation: Swimming with the Turtles in Barbados

Swimming with the turtles was an incredible experience! This guy was so close several times I could have reached out and touched him!

On our sixth day of the cruise we had the opportunity to visit Bridgetown, Barbados.  Today was one of my favorites because we were able to relax together as a family and we were able to experience some amazing new adventures for the first time.  Like many of the other Caribbean Islands we had visited on our trip Barbados was a plantation culture, cultivating primarily tobacco, cotton, and sugar cane.  The English settled Barbados after the Arawaks were gone with the primary agriculture crop being sugar cane.  They built an amazing defense system of 26 forts along the coast of Barbados.  Barbados gained their independence from Britian in 1966, however, the British influence remains evident.  There are a lot of great activities to enjoy while on the island of Barbados from touring the wildlife reserve to seeing the home of the Green Monkey to snorkeling with turtles, sting rays and more in one of the great locations around the island to shopping or relaxing at the beach. Barbados had beautiful turquoise blue Caribbean Island water that you could look down and see to the bottom of the ocean floor.  It was a great place to swim, snorkel, and see all kinds of neat sea life.

We had a more relaxing day planned in Barbados.  It was our day to spend at the beach swimming, jet skiing, snorkeling, relaxing, and more. I didn’t learn as much history about Barbados since we basically took at taxi ride from the boat to Blue Monkey beach (which is not on the tourist map if you go to Barbados but I highly recommend the beach).    Jake, Amber and I swam out a little further from the swimming area and had the opportunity to swim with turtles, sting rays and a variety of other fish.  It was such a neat experience looking down or beside you and seeing a turtle or sting ray swimming right next to you.  There were several times I could have reached out and touched the turtle.  I am thankful for the water camera we had (thanks honey) with us so we could share these pictures with Brina and Karlie.  We have had fresh water turtles at home before but to swim with one in the ocean was a memory that I will never forget.  I do have to admit the swim out to see the turtles, sting rays and fish was easier then the swim back to the beach.  If you decide to go to Blue Monkey Beach and swim out a little further to snorkel on your own I recommend you take at least one or two other people for additional fun and to have someone to swim with you.

It was nice spending time swimming and relaxing at the beach for several hours.  Another activity we did while were were at the beach was ride on jet ski’s.  We had three jet ski’s with Lee and Becky, Josh and Amber, and Dad and I riding on a jet ski.  After being out for only a few minutes we looked over to see Amber hanging off the jet ski quickly followed by her and Josh crashing, it was an interesting to watch.  We found out that flipping a jet ski in the ocean was not a simple task, but we managed to get it back upright.  It took us a little bit to figure out how to steer with the waves and not crash but by the end I think everyone had a better handle on it.  I think Lee and Becky were the only ones that didn’t crash their jet ski.  Dad and I felt the jet ski tipping over one time and bailed off so we didn’t have to flip it back over in the water.  We had fun racing each other.  You can get the jet ski’s going pretty quick.  Bouncing off the waves, feeling the wind in your hair, and the spray of the water hitting your face was a lot of fun.  I was surprised at how much I enjoyed speeding across the ocean on a jet ski.  Having an opportunity to experience the adventure with family made it even more memorable.

If you ever have a chance to go to Barbados check out Blue Monkey Beach and what it has to offer.  The jet ski’s were a little more expensive but we only had to paid $5 to rent a snorkel mask to swim out to the turtles and sting rays.  Here are a few facts about the beautiful island of Barbados:

    • Capital: Bridgetown
    • Population: 254,000
    • Climate: Temperature 75F to 90F year round, typically 8+ hours of sunshine a day
    • Geography: Caribbean Island – 21 miles x 14 miles.  Barbados on the West & South have the calm Caribbean sea and beaches.  On the East is rugged cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean
    • Language: English (with a broad dialect)
    • Currency: Barbados Dollar (US $1 = BDS $2)
    • Time: GMT (no daylight savings time in Barbados)

A Vacation To Remember series is a reflection on our recent trip and ways we relaxed.  Life is short and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to build memories with family and explore of of the most amazing places during our time away.  Go with a good attitude and looking for fun and it will be an awesome trip jammed packed with positive memories.  It is refreshing having some time away from the regular routine.  Make it a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet new people and learn.  You just might see or try something new that takes your breath away!

  • Be My Valentine: Romantic Dinner for Two!

You have the babysitter lined up for the kids now it is time to figure out what fun excursion to do with your spouse.  Going out to eat at a restaurant is a great option, however, going on Valentine’s Day can mean a lot of waiting in lines.  If you have your heart set on going to a restaurant go to a place where you can make a reservation in advanced or pick a different evening near Valentine’s Day.  As a side note, the point of Valentine’s Day is to spend time together and celebrate with your love ones.  If you do it a day earlier or later it can be an even more relaxing and romantic date to remember.  Since Valentine’s Day is on a Monday this year, try going on Friday or Saturday before Valentine’s Day.  Going near the Holiday but not on the Holiday allows you to get into the restaurant easier and dinner will be more relaxing with better service because you’re not rushed.  It will be less expensive for the babysitter that night since you don’t have to be out as long waiting for a table.

My recommendation if you want to go out on Valentine’s Days (or any other Date Night) for less go on a picnic with your spouse.  Why is going a picnic a better option:

    • It’s Less Expensive – you can pick up food on sale at the grocery store and make it at home.
    • No Waiting in Line
    • Relaxing Meal Together
    • One-on-One Conversation without interruptions

Since it is winter time you may ask, how do we do a picnic in the snow?  The last cold picnic we went on together Jake and I found a great spot to park.  We took all the seats out of the van except the front two then put a air mattress in the back part of the van.  We brought a picnic basket full of goodies and a movie.  We had a quiet relaxing meal together, talked, and enjoyed a movie.  It was a great evening full of fun and relaxation.

“Be My Valentine” is a series of creative ways you can celebrate Valentine’s Day with those you love.  You can make it a special Holiday without spending a lot.  Spread a little extra cheer to those around you this Valentine’s Day!  Surprise your loved ones with a fun and thoughtful gift from the heart.  It is a great time to reflect on sweet memories as well as create new ones with whole family.  May this Valentine’s season be bursting with love for you!

  • Starting off with a BANG….

Neat pictures - parts of airplanes at the Marriott.

We left for our exciting cruise vacation late on a Friday afternoon.  We were all packed, loaded in the van, and ready to go only to discover the van would not start.  Oh BOY!  Not again, the van has already been in the shop two times in the last couple of months.  After a quick call to Jake I tried to explain the situation to the girls.  They were in tears because they were super excited about starting their vacation together with friends while we were on the cruise.

We decided to all head back inside and have fun while waiting for Daddy to come home.  We read a couple books together as we were waiting.  Brina picked out a book about a Ballerina and Karlie picked out “The Empire’s New Clothes”.  After reading the books we took a few minutes to snuggle and talk.  We did a few extra chores around the house then Jake was home.  Looking back it was nice to have a few moments of quiet and relaxing time together before leaving.  He was able to jump start the van and away we went only a little over an hour off schedule.

We got the girls settled into their new home for the week.  They were excited about spending their vacation with friends and had been looking forward to it for a long time.  Jake and I started our first leg of our trip together as a couple.  The van was a little quiet without the girls giggling and talking in the back but we enjoyed our time together.

On the way we stopped at Flying J for a potty break and to pick up a snack for breakfast the next morning at the airport.  We were flying out early and getting checked in and through the security could take up any extra time so we wanted to be prepared.  We had a quick but nice supper at Arby’s.  It is always smart to bring coupons on vacation with you because you never know where you might stop to eat.  It is amazing how much you can save over the course of a trip by using coupons.

The roads under the bridges were still icy from the snow storm earlier that week but we made it safely to Atlanta and checked into Atlanta Airport Marriott for the night.  They have a wonderful program we have used several times where you park your vehicle at the hotel and they drive you to the airport which costs less then parking even in the long term parking at the airport.  You can park even if you are not planning on spending the night at the hotel.  This was the first time we used it and spent the night.  Since we spent the night our parking was free for a week and it was still less then parking at the airport.  Plus with the flight leaving early in the morning we wanted to make sure we were at the airport on time.  Marriott had a shuttle going to and from the airport every 15 minutes making it convenient to catch a ride when you wanted to leave for the airport.   We did all the planning for this ahead of time and reserved the room and parking online.  Love being able to get things done before ever leaving on vacation.  Many other cities provide this service as well so it may be worth checking into before you fly the next time if you cannot have someone drive you, it really has saved us a lot of money over the last few years.

Jake and I had a wonderful couple hours to relax before getting a good nights sleep.  We don’t have a TV in our room at home so we surfed the channels for a few minutes and ended up watching “Bill Cosby’s Himself”.  I had never seen it before, for an example of the show click here.  It was nice to relax together and just laugh listening to Bill Cosby.  We had no where to be until the morning so we relaxed!
