• Kit Carson County Carousel (Burlington, CO)

Kit Carson County Carousel Wooden Token

This is the second time we have visited the Kit Carson Carousel. It sits on the edge of the Kit Carson County fairgrounds in the small town of Burlington, Colorado. The first time we visited the carousel we were driving Interstate 70 from Colorado to Kansas to visit family.  We were looking for a good place to stop for a little bit and stretch our legs.  It was such a neat place to visit we told other family members about it and the next time we were driving through we stopped to share the experience with them!

The carousel was #6 of the 74 carousels made by Philadelphia Toboggan Company.  It was made in 1905 for the Elitch Gardens amusement park and was used until 1927.  In 1928 Kit Carson County purchased the carousel for $1,200 (the price included shipping).

The carousel animals are stationary with three animals per row.  The original Wurlitzer band organ has been restored and plays music when the carousel is in motion. The carousel is inside a 12 sided framed building on the edge of the fair grounds with a museum and small gift shop beside it.  It is the only antique carousel that still has the original paint on both the panels and animals. Most modern carousel go approximately 8 mph, however, the Kit Carson one goes a whopping 12 mph.

The carousel has quite an interesting history. During the Great Depression the carousel spent several years in storage. They local town stored grain inside the building that housed the carousel. At one point 3 of the animals were stolen and later found in another state. It was designated a National Historic Site in 1978 and National Historic Landmark in 1987.

If you are in the area or driving through on I70 we would encourage you to stop and explore this neat carousel. It only costs 25 cents to ride the carousel and $1 to visit the museum.

  • Travel & Vacation: Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center (Anchorage, Alaska)

Our family recently had the opportunity to travel to Alaska for our family vacation.  We arrived in Anchorage in the middle of the night, slept a couple hours before getting up and heading out to explore Anchorage.  One of the first stops we made was the Anchorage Museum at Ramuson Center, 625 C. Street, Anchorage, AK.  The hotel driver dropped us off right outside the entrance of the museum.

The kids loved the opportunity to learn about Alaska – fFrom displays with the culture, life styles, people, and history of Alaska. The kids loved exploring the neat science and technology exhibits as well as watching the animal presentation! They had really cool boulder chairs and places for parents or grandparents to sit and relax in the common area which seemed popular for the adults! The kids loved it and it was entertaining for us as parents too.

If you have some extra time while in Anchorage and you’re traveling with your family you should check it out. If you want you can use a free locker to put your travel items in while going through the museum. Also, it is part of the Science Center Association so if you are a member of your local Science Center check to see if they are part of the Association and you will get into this museum for free! 🙂

We had a blast at this museum!  They were not into the “art” gallery as much as the history, science and more kid focused rooms.  They had a lot of neat history and culture regarding Alaska.  It’s a great place to visit if you have kids and some time while in Anchorage, Alaska!

I think Paula’s shoes may be a little bit fancier than just the average Mary Jane.

We’re having fun at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History!

We had a blast working our way through the various sections at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History.  They had one section that was very interactive, a lot of science, experiments, brain teasers, heritage, and more.  We ended our visit at what I call the “fun zone”.  It was like a giant indoor jungle gym with lots of things to do, see, and learn about.  They did are really great job with this museum.  Our kids really enjoyed it.  We made it through the entire museum, we were there when they opened and left as they were closing.  It was a full day of fun and learning.

  • Travel & Vacation: Fernbank Museum of Natural History (Atlanta, GA)

    P1140394c

We’re ready to explore the Fernbank Museum of Natural History

On one of our recent trips to Atlanta, Georgia we visited the Fernbank Museum of Natural History.  We had never been to the Museum, but were looking for fun and educational activities to do with the kids before heading home.  Since it appeared to have some great items we decided to give it a try.

The girls were very excited to check out this museum.  They have a variety of activities and events that you can do as well.  If you get hungry during your visit there is a cafe where you can grab a bite to eat.  We had packed our sandwiches before leaving the hotel so when we got hungry we headed out to the van for a picnic lunch then went back inside to finish exploring the museum. We had a lot of fun and spent a lot more time going through it than we initially planned.  The kids probably could have stayed longer, but they were closing for the day and we had to get back home.

For more information, directions, and other details about the museum you can visit their visit at  Fernbank Museum of Natural History.  If you happen to be in Atlanta and it’s a rainy day this would be a great place to take your family.  Plus you might see and learn some new stuff along the way too.

  • Kids Day at THE AG: Framers Who Were Farmers Constitution Day

    U.S. Constitution

The girls earned their Jr. Historian Badges for Framers Who Were Farmers – U.S. Constitution Event

On September 17th every year we celebrate Constitution Day!  Back on September 17, 1787 a total of 42 of the 55 delegates held their final meeting at the Constitutional Convention.  It was the day they signed the Constitution of the United States of America!

Shortly after Constitution Day we attended an event at the Bart Garrison Agricultural Museum.  The event was called Kids Day at THE AG: Framers Who Were Farmers.  It was for students in 4th to 7th grades.  They had activities, role playing, field work, and discussions pertaining to the U. S. Constitution.  They covered information such as:

    • The Preamble
    • Separation of Powers
    • History, Framers, and Impact of the U.S. Constitution
    • Declaration of Independence
    • Articles of Confederation
    • Bill of Rights

Staff dressed up as James Madison.  Discussion on the U.S. Constitution.

The Founding Fathers used scientific inventions and various forms of farming techniques.  Some of the men who signed the Constitution were farmers, a few of them were:

    • George Washington
    • James Madison
    • Charles Pinckney
    • Charles Cotesworth Pinckney
    • Thomas Jefferson
    • Benjamin Franklin

There were several things the farmers experienced such as depletion of soil nutrients, purchasing local produce and crops, local insects, trees, vegetation, and being self-supportive farms.

Some of the activities the kids did at the event were discussing the Constitution.  Designing a poster.  Experimenting with soil and the nutrients in it.  Planting some seeds and recording their findings.  The kids received a Jr. Historian Pin and a U.S. Constitution pocket guide.    The girls had a lot of fun learning about the U.S. Constitution, activities, and experiments.

    P1100947c

After exploring the U.S.S. Yorktown we toured the U.S.S. Laffey and U.S.S. Clamagore (the submarine).  We packed a lot of learning, exploring, and fun into one day while we were at Charleston.  Thankful for the opportunity to learn little pieces of our country’s history and share the experience with our kids.  It was a muggy and rainy day, but we had a great time.  Although it poured when we were going between the Laffey and the Clamagore we just splashed through the puddles laughing the whole way (luckily there was no lightening since we were in between large hunks of metal conductors).

The U.S.S. Laffey was used back in the 1940’s.  One of it’s biggest battles was off the shores of Okinawa when over 20 Japanese bombers and kamikazes attacked it.  They have an actual place you can go into and “experience” what it was like for the men on that day.  It was a rainy day so we only had to wait a couple minutes to get into the Mount 53 experience, it was really neat activity to do if you are ever on the U.S.S. Laffey!

Whenever we have an opportunity to go to Charleston we try to pick at least one historical adventure to go on as a family.  One of our recent trips to Charleston we decided to spend a good chunk of the day at Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum touring the U.S.S. Yorktown.  When we got the tickets the day before they said to plan on being there at least 2 to 3 hours, we spent over 6 hours going through the U.S.S. Yorktown, U.S.S Laffey, and the U.S.S. Clamagore.  The kids had a blast and it was a wonderful learning activity for all of us.  Makes us appreciate the men and women who serve our country even more.

What the Army, Navy, and Air Force Medals of Honor look like.  A Medal of Honor is given by the President, in the name of Congress, to a member of the military who distinguishes themselves by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of losing their own life.  They go beyond the call of duty.  The act must be one of bravery or self-sacrifice.  The youngest person to ever receive a Medal of Honor was William Johnston, age 12.  In 1862 during the Peninsula Campaign many men were taking off their equipment so they had less to carry and could retreat faster.  William (also known as “Willie”) was the only drummer boy to bring his drum off the battlefield.

  • Travel & Vacation: Traveling to Kansas, Jesse James Bank Museum, and Milford Lake

Travel to Kansas - Jesse James Bank, Lake Trip, Milford, Family

On board and ready for take off!

One of the reasons our family travels is because our extended family is so spread out.  This summer we headed out to Kansas to spend time with my family.  We got on the plane early Thursday morning in Greenville, SC and by mid-morning we were in Kansas City ready to go.

    P1200001c

We had a layover in Chicago!  The kids found it very entertaining to go on the walking sidewalks in the airport.  We didn’t get a chance to visit the actually city of Chicago, but it was good to get out and stretch our legs in the airport for a little bit between flights.  The advantage to the really early flights is the airport is not as crowded!

    P1200005c

Karlie found a great way to pass the time during our layover….reading!  She was so excited to found out that I had added a bunch of free kids books onto my Kindle!  She is frequently found around the house with her nose in a good book too so this did not come as a surprise.

    P1200007c

Brina found a good amazing animal website to check out too.

    P1200009c

After landing in Kansas City and getting our rental car we were off to explore the area.  Our first stop was Wendy’s for an early lunch (we had been up since 4 am).  The second stop was the Jesse James Bank Museum in Liberty, Missouri.  Not far from the Kansas City MCI airport.
