• Exploring Roper Mountain Science Center

Getting ready to watch the show at the Roper Mountain Science Center

The first time I took a tour of Roper Mountain Science Center was with the girls class earlier this year.  It was a blast watching a space presentation, going on a nature trail, seeing the wildlife, having a picnic and more.  The girls had so much fun.  I always knew that Roper Mountain Science Center had some activities for the kids but until I went with the girls I had no idea how much!

Karlie entertained by the show, anything to do with space is always a hit with her!

Brina having a fun time! I got to sit next to Brina for the show.

What are they looking at?   Don’t fall in the water!

Red Eared Slider Turtles (of course)!  The girls were super excited to see the turtles, these are the same kind as Shipwreck and Overboard!

Beautiful flower garden and butterflies near the butterfly crossing.

The girls had a lot of fun exploring Roper Mountain Science Center and learning a lot of great stuff.  Roper Mountain has since become one of the girls favorite places to visit.  We try to go every month or two.  It is a great learning environment if you have kids.

  • Local Activities: “Dine Out for Mom” Event on Thursday, October 20th

There is a special event going on tomorrow, Thursday, October 20, 2011 called “Dine Out For Mom” which is a part of the “Let There Be Mom” organization.  As a Mom with small children it is important for me to remember that life is precious, sweet, and short.  We never know what joys and trials life will bring our way.  You may know of a friend or family member that has gone through serious illness and given only a short amount of time to live.   This event is to remind us to celebrate life, create memories, cherish our family, and help others because our life here on earth is not forever.

What is “Let There Be Mom”? It is an organization that provides help to Moms when they or their spouse is diagnosed with a serious illness.  How was it started?   “Let There Be Mom” comes along side the family going through this difficult time to preserve memories.  They do this through a variety of services tailored to meet the needs and wishes of the individual families. Some examples of ways you can get involved – photography, scrapbooks,  journals, videos, meals, errands, special events, care packages, family cookbooks, and many more wonderful activities.  The “Dine Out For Mom” event tomorrow is designed to help raise funds for this great organization.   When you eat at one of the participating restaurants they will donate a portion of the proceeds to “Let There Be Mom” so they can continue to help families that are losing a loved one.

Take some time out of your busy day to meet a friend for lunch or take the family out for dinner.  What a great way to spend time with those you love while helping a wonderful organization that is committed to preserving family memories.

For more information about the “Let There Be Mom” organization, their services, and how to get involved please visit their website.

Greenville Drive Baseball Game - let's play ball!

After getting rained out for the girls first Greenville Drive Game we decided to give it another shot and go again.  The day looked like it may rain but ended up being beautiful.  Since our first game was rained out we ended up being able to attend a double header.  The girls did great and enjoyed watching the two games and the fireworks afterward.  They had an amazing firework display following the second game.

  • Summer Activities: The Girls First Greenville Drive’s Baseball Game

Greenville Drive Stadium - Fluor Field

We were able to get tickets to a Greenville Drive Baseball through a work contact so we decided to take the girls to their first Greenville Drive’s Baseball Game.  The Greenville Drive is an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox’s Team.   Like with any outdoor event such as baseball you are subject to the weather conditions. The girls were super excited but after the game got delayed followed by wind, rain, hail, and thunder they had to cancel the game for the night. Although it was a fascinating experience watching the workers drag the huge tarp out onto the field the game being cancelled was a disappointment. The girls handled it fairly well and we were managed to squeeze in a few minutes of another special activity. We were able to get another set of Drive tickets for a double header so their first Drive game was postponed temporarily.

Having fun on the playground at the Greenville Drive Stadium!

Saying "HI" to Reedy the Greenville Drive mascot before the game!

You guessed it! The girls first Greenville Drive baseball game and was pouring rain and hail. The giant tarp was not coming off the field that night!

Brina had a moment of sadness because it rained and the baseball game was cancelled.

Daddy trying to cheer up Karlie despite her obvious disappointment that the game was rained out!

Since the game was cancelled we managed to squeeze in ice cream sundaes and a little bit of play time at McDonald's indoor play area! Can you find them? (Hint - look at the ceiling)

    WAY up high!

They like to be up in the high towers, can you tell!

Bargain Foods is a another great place to shop if you are in the area.  We ran into 3 people that we knew just the short time we were in the store.  It is a “bent / dent” store so some items are dented and you want to make sure to check the expiration dates.  The items available will depend on what they receive from other places who have overstock or for whatever reason want Bargain Foods to move it for them.  You can find some great deals but always check the prices when shopping.  Bargain Foods is a discount grocery store so they don’t take coupons at their stores, some items you may be better off buying at a local store that takes coupons.  I purchase 72 items and very few of them were over $1.

    WalMart Groceries

    Groceries from WalMart:

    • $0.00 at WalMart (I had a $5 gift card so didn’t have to pay anything for these items) for clearance French Loaf Bread ($0.90), Purple Grapes, and Strawberries.

I am excited to be back doing our Groceries $40 for 4 budget again.  This week I spent $63.81 on groceries.  I went over the grocery budget this week and used up most of the extra cash I had in my “grocery wallet” to stock up on items.    This week we had couple extra events that I had to purchase items for which I didn’t have on hand so that brought the amount up as well.    Hopefully next week I will do better and keep it well under $40.  Thankfully I had a little bit left over from previous weeks to cover the extra amount.

It is my goal to give you regular updates on this budget section so you can celebrate the good weeks with me and thump me on the bad weeks!  As always you are welcomed to join the journey with me.  I would love to hear your story and how you are doing too.  The purpose of our family doing this it to watch our grocery spending while allowing us to feed our family, enjoy life, share with others, and yet stay on track with our budget.

Living on a Budget is a series of ways our family uses a budget to help keep us accountable with our finances.  Life doesn’t always go as planned.  We have used some of the ideas I will be sharing for years while others are ones we are just starting to implement as we continue finding ways to be creative and have fun with what we have been given.  Having a plan in place allows us the freedom to be smart with what we have been given, get more creative when it is a tight (week, month, year or a season) and when necessary live a much more simplified life.  A budget helps us stay on track so we have more opportunities to enjoy the many blessings we have been given as well as share what we have with others.  There is so much more to life than having all the stuff.  We may not have the newest or greatest items in our house, we drive used cars, and wear hand-me-down clothing…..however, if our family is taken care of and have love for each other and others we have more than all the riches in the world.
