• Fun Around Town: Safari Bus Ride & Beautiful Peacocks at Hollywild Animal Park (Wellford, SC)

Heading out on the Safari Ride at Hollywild

The kids loved the Safari Bus Ride at Hollywild Animal Park.  They had a grand time feeding and petting the animals that walked up to the bus.  It was neat to see a variety of animals on the trip.

We have come to Hollywild for their Holiday Lights Safari Benefit as well as a couple times when they were younger.  Once we were there for a party with friends which was a lot of fun.  It was neat watching the kids and animals interact on the Safari.

In previous visits I don’t remember seeing so many peacocks.  They seemed to be everywhere (or maybe we just had the same ones following us around).  They were beautiful!  The males had their feathers all spiked up and shaking to get the attention of the pretty female peacocks or to shoo away any person or animal that got too close.  I have never seen peacocks up their feathers so much.  It was fascinating to watch them.  The male peacock is the one that has all the bold beautiful colors with a long tail feathers.  The female peacock has a lot of similar colors, but not as vibrant and shorter tail.

For more information about our adventure at Hollywild you can check out our post:

Our family visiting Hollywild Animal Park

Recently our family made a trip across town to visit Hollywild Animal Park in Wellford, South Carolina.  We already had a couple events earlier that day on that side of town so we just drove a little further and spent the afternoon having fun at Hollywild Animal Park.  It was a beautiful day and it was great seeing as well as interacting with the animals.

Even though our girls are twins they have very different interests, however, they both share a interest in anything pertaining to animals.  They love animals so this trip was a lot of fun for them.  All the animals seemed very active which was fascinating to watch that day too.  You could tell they were enjoying the Spring sunshine.  The newborn baby animals were very adorable!

The only problem we had is between my husband and I we took a lot of pictures so it was hard to narrow down some of our favorites.  We consolidated, but will probably highlight Hollywild in a couple posts in order to give you a full view our trip to this fun place.

If you live in the Greenville area you should check out this Hollywild Animal Park if you haven’t already especially if you have kids who enjoy being around animals.  There a good variety of animals and you have opportunities for more interaction with the animals as well.  It’s a great family event to do together.  Not to mention it is educational for the kids.

After spending an afternoon at Hollywild the girls first comments were – “Wow, that was a lot of fun!”  and  “I wished we lived closer so we could go more often!”  The kids give it a big thumbs up!

Here are some of the pictures from the animals we met while at Hollywild Animal Park:

Hollywild Animal Park, set in rural Upstate SC is a gem among parks and zoos – it’s a combination of both! The natural pathways and open spaces with plenty of picnic areas make it a great place to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of life and explore: the laughter of your children, time together, and the great outdoors. But there’s more – more than 500 animals native to countries around the globe make their home at Hollywild. In the walking area of the park, you are close to all kinds of animals from the curious camels and humorous bears (who can be seen playing on the park’s webcam www.hollywild.org Eyes on Hollywild) to the majestic great cats (lions, tigers, leopards, and cougars), striking baboons and ambassador wolves. Petting areas are intentionally placed throughout the park. Children wanting to pet the “kitty” may need to be redirected if that “kitty” happens to be a 500 pound Siberian Tiger, but just a few feet away you find a petting area where donkeys, alpaca, goats, and even pigs can be found ready for some attention. Free roaming birds like the brilliant peacocks, guineas, and exotic chickens show their colors throughout the grounds adding another element of fun to your visit. A bit of learning is tucked into a Hollywild visit too, with the aid of signage and the Creature Feature programs in the park’s amphitheater. Both showcase details about the featured animals and give you the inside scoop on their unique adaptations and behaviors. There just aren’t many places where you learn a little then spread out a picnic blanket beside a waterfall in view of a rare white lion, one of the newest additions to the Hollywild family. His inspiring story and Hollywild’s partnership in an international effort to conserve the rare white subspecies make it easy to see why this place is a treasure on so many levels.

Included in your admission is the Safari Bus Ride you won’t want to miss. Converted old-style school buses take you and yours on a journey you’ll not soon forget – on the ride you meet all kinds of herbivores: emu, donkeys, water buffalo, bison, watusi, and zebras who come to the bus for snack time. You just can’t see the foot-long tongue of a watusi up-close from anywhere – but you can at Hollywild! From the bus, catch a glimpse of “Tank” the park’s rare white rhino and star of many television commercials. In fact, that’s where the park’s name originated – through the movie industry. Hollywild has a 40+ year history – starting from a modest private backyard collection of animals to the nearly 100 acre public access park it is today. It grew as a result of Hollywood movie makers calling founder David Meeks and asking to film his animals. The funds raised by those efforts built the park to be the great resource it is today. Walking through the park you can see the star signs indicating the movies that Hollywild animals have appeared in during the park’s history.

The park converted to a non-profit organization more than 15 years ago so that it would be run by a board of directors who could see to it that the park lives on as a great resource for generations to come. Many animals have been born here or brought here as rescues and some as ‘retirees’ from circus acts. Each has a special story worth hearing. Though staff recommend at least 2 hours for a visit during Park Season, others recommend just planning to spend the whole day as you can ride the bus as many times as you like and just relax enjoying the nature abundant around you. Picnics are welcome or you can purchase light concessions on-site. The park’s website Hollywild has links to places to stay, eat, and play nearby making it easy to plan a weekend getaway to the Upstate area convenient to I-85 and I-26.  For more information or directions the address is 2325 Hampton Road, Wellford, SC 29385 and phone number is 864-472-2038

    Beautiful SC Sunrise

    Gorgeous Sunrise!

The kids and I enjoyed this beautiful sunrise earlier this week.  It’s not every day we see these great sunrises in South Carolina.  Our drive to school was perfectly timed with the sunrise on this special morning.

Thankful for a chance to share this with my kids.  All of us were glad that we got stopped at the stoplight that morning so we could soak in the beauty around us.  It’s the little treasures throughout each day such as a beautiful sunrise that remind us of the many blessings in our lives.

  • Greenville: Journey to Bethlehem Event

    Journey to Bethlehem Event

Roman Solider on the outside of the gate to Bethlehem

We went to the Journey to Bethlehem Event with Jake’s cousins family a couple weeks ago.  It was a really neat event by the Greenville Nazarene church.  When you arrived you signed in and received a token to pay your taxes to the Roman soldiers once you arrived at the city of Bethlehem.  Before going into the city you watched a short video sharing the history behind the event and preparing you for what will happen once inside the city.  The event is free and well worth going through with your family.  They do it every year.

They had about 12 booths that you could go to each one doing something different.  At each booth you got a treat (like bread that would be eaten during that time) or bead to put onto your necklace or you made something (like a toy from that era).  There were animals you could pet, hot chocolate, a manger scene, and so much more.  We have wanted to attend this event for the past few years, but always had a conflict on the weekend they did it.  Thanks Luke and Kristen for inviting us to come with you.  We had a great time and it was a wonderful learning experience for the kids too!  It was really nice to attend an event that reflected on the original meaning of Christmas.  This event had to take a lot of time and energy from many people to make happen.  Thank You!

Date Night at Hearts of Clay Pottery

Brina working on her new plate!

Earlier this year I took the girls to Hearts of Clay to make their first pottery creations.  We were super excited when we got the call from Hearts of Clay saying that the items were ready to pick up, however, one of the pieces had broken (Brina’s big flower plate).  They were very sweet and offered to let her create another plate if she wanted to come in and do it.  Although, she was sad about the broken plate that she had worked so hard on she was a good sport and felt a lot better knowing she could create another one.  We made it into a Mom-Daughter Date Night and had a great time being creative together.  Thankful for Hearts of Clay and their kindness in letting her come make a new plate.  We had a wonderful time and look forward to another fun activity at Hearts of Clay in the future.

Mom Daughter Date Night at Hearts of Clay Pottery

Brina’s new plate!  She made the plate beautiful, but simple this time around.  Instead of a flower she chose a square shape.  Her colors are very similar to the last one she created.

We also picked up the pieces that were done from the previous visit to Hearts of Clay!  They turned out really well!  Glad the girls enjoyed this fun adventure!

All the pieces that survived the first fun creative evening at Hearts of Clay.  Karlie’s is the rocket plate and the goat!  Brina’s is the purple heart, black lab, giraffe, and cat (whose tail fell off).

Karlie was so thrilled “Oreo” the goat came out well.

    P1280234c

Karlie loves space so her rocket, stars, and planet plate was a perfect display of something she enjoys!  She was pleased with how it turned out!

We are looking forward to seeing how this Brina’s recent plate turned out along with her other little creations she made with the extra clay.  We met up with Jake and Karlie after finishing up at Hearts of Clay and the four of us went out to dinner together.  It was nice to spend a little one-on-one time with Brina as well as a relaxing rest of the evening with the family.

  • Charleston: Historic Edmonston-Alston House

    P1260371c

Ready to tour the Historic Edmonston-Alston House in Charleston!

The next historic house we toured in Charleston was the Edmonston-Alston House.  We arrived a few minutes before the house opened so we were able to grab a picture and relax a few minutes.  On the side porch they have a place for you to sit, get a refreshing glass of water, and relax.  We enjoyed a few minutes of relaxing and chatting before heading into the house.  We were not allowed to take pictures in this house either so most of what you are pictures the exterior or porch.

We have passed the Edmonston-Alston House many times on the way to the Battery Park.  It is only a short walk away from Battery Park and overlooks the Charleston Harbor.  Several notable historical figures were present in this house.  It was on the balcony (or piazza as they call it in Charleston) of the Edmonston-Alston House that General P.T. Beauregard saw the bombardment of Fort Sumter at the beginning of the Civil War.  General Robert E. Lee used the Edmonston-Alston as a safe haven from Charleston’s 1861 fire.

The house was built by Charles Edmonston who was a shipping merchant, however, due to economic hardship in the mid 1800’s Charles Edmonston sold his house to Charles Alston.  Charles Alston was a predominant rice planter.  It was Alston who added the balcony on the third level of the house and his family’s coat of arms on the balcony along the roof.  The house has been through many historical events in Charleston from the Civil War, Charleston Fire in 1861, Earthquake in 1886, Hurricanes, and more.

An heir from the Alston family still lives in the upper level of the house, but generously allows visitors to take tours.  A lot of the furniture, silver, and other items in the house are actual the Alston family heirlooms which make this house more unique.  It was really neat to see items that have been preserved and kept within the family for over 150 years.   The Middleton Place Plantation actually manages the Edmonston-Alston House and if you are looking for a neat place to stay in Charleston you can stay at the Edmonston-Alston Bed and Breakfast.

    P1260375c

The lady who led the tour for the Edmonston-Alston House was our favorite.  She was very personable, was excited to see the kids, made the tour interesting, and great learning experience for all of us.  She die an interactive scavenger hunt with the girls throughout the house and they got a little prize at the end too.  The girls got to experience the joggling board for the first time at the Edmonston-Alston House.  We have seen several, but they had never sat on one.  They loved it!  Such a fun experience!

The joggling board was first found during the Antebellum period in the South.  It is a long board that is supported on each end by wooden stands that can rock back and forth.  The board is springy and the people sitting on it can bounce up and down as well as rock back and forth on it.  There are a couple stories behind the purpose of the joggling board.

One theory –  it was developed because C. Kinloch’s sister, Benjamin Kinloch Huger, had rheumatism which made it impossible for her to go for horse and carriage rides.  The joggling board was put outside on the porch for fresh air and exercise.  It mimicked the motion of riding a horse or in a carriage.  Soon the joggling board became a staple piece on many porches in the Lowcountry and was a great way to relax while sitting outside.

Another theory – was that the joggling boards were created as “courting benches” for young couples.   Per the legend if you sit on a joggling board with a young suitor you were considered engaged.  The man would start on one end of the joggling board and the women on the other side.  As the couple joggled they would slowly move to the center of the joggling board.  Once the young couple was in the middle of the joggling board they could briefly sit together and have a conversation.

I have heard the second theory several times, but the first one made more sense.  You hear stories of the lady of the house or one of the maids rocking babies on the joggling board before putting them to bed too.  The girls were ready to get one for our porch they thought it was so much fun.

Our end of Summer Break activity was going to the Otter Creek Waterpark!  None of us had ever been to this Greenville Waterpark so we decided it should be the one we try out to celebrate the end of summer.  It was actually one of the closer ones to us since we were coming from Easley.  The girls had a BLAST swimming around.  We arrived shortly after they opened and didn’t leave until late in the afternoon.  We splashed around in the water and went down the slides many times!   It was a lot of fun hanging out at the waterpark with the girls!

    P1090176c

Thankful for a wonderful, relaxing, and fun weekend away with the family.

We had a great day swimming, biking, and playing at Sadlers Creek State Park near Anderson, SC.  Our tent was surrounded by trees but we could still see Lake Hartwell.  The first night we played card games until late at night and crashed.  The second night we experimented by toasting smores, starbursts, twillers, and fruit chews over the camp fire.  They were a fun camping treat!  We wrapped up the second night at the campsite relaxing and sharing some of our favorite summer memories.  We are blessed and so much to be grateful for in our lives.

Our family had a blast going camping at Sadlers Creek State Park this summer!  It was the first out of the yard tent camping with just our family.  The girls have been asking to go camping so we decided to do it! The Sadlers Creek tent camping area is near Anderson, South Carolina and almost all the tent sites overlook Lake Hartwell.  It was beautiful, peaceful, and a lot of fun spending the weekend together.  There was enough trees between the campsites you had some privacy.  We ran into our friends from church the first night too!  We biked everywhere and had fun swimming in the lake.  There were two restroom facilities near us both with showers which was nice especially with the kids!

Once we arrived we biked everywhere.  It was a great way to get around, explore some neat areas, and get some exercise!  We biked to several different places that had sandy beaches, many of them were quiet with no other people around.   After setting up the tent and camp area we picked out a couple of beaches we wanted to come back to the next day.

The girls were thrilled with our morning guests!  The geese were not scared of the kids and hung around for about 30 minutes.
