Kit Carson County Carousel (Burlington, CO)
Kit Carson County Carousel Wooden Token
This is the second time we have visited the Kit Carson Carousel. It sits on the edge of the Kit Carson County fairgrounds in the small town of Burlington, Colorado. The first time we visited the carousel we were driving Interstate 70 from Colorado to Kansas to visit family. We were looking for a good place to stop for a little bit and stretch our legs. It was such a neat place to visit we told other family members about it and the next time we were driving through we stopped to share the experience with them!
The carousel was #6 of the 74 carousels made by Philadelphia Toboggan Company. It was made in 1905 for the Elitch Gardens amusement park and was used until 1927. In 1928 Kit Carson County purchased the carousel for $1,200 (the price included shipping).
The carousel animals are stationary with three animals per row. The original Wurlitzer band organ has been restored and plays music when the carousel is in motion. The carousel is inside a 12 sided framed building on the edge of the fair grounds with a museum and small gift shop beside it. It is the only antique carousel that still has the original paint on both the panels and animals. Most modern carousel go approximately 8 mph, however, the Kit Carson one goes a whopping 12 mph.
The carousel has quite an interesting history. During the Great Depression the carousel spent several years in storage. They local town stored grain inside the building that housed the carousel. At one point 3 of the animals were stolen and later found in another state. It was designated a National Historic Site in 1978 and National Historic Landmark in 1987.
If you are in the area or driving through on I70 we would encourage you to stop and explore this neat carousel. It only costs 25 cents to ride the carousel and $1 to visit the museum.

On the Road Again: Where Were We?
If you guessed the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri you are correct! We have actually been in St. Louis 4 times already this month. I have seen the Arch many times driving through St. Louis, but a couple years ago we actually went up in it. It is a great place to visit with some neat history. There is actually a museum in the bottom of the arch.
Did you know?
- Arch is 630 feet tall
- It is made of Steel and Concrete
- Eero Saarinen was the Finnish-American architect who designed the Arch
- From the top of the Arch on a clear day you can see up 30 miles in either direction
- Tram ride takes 4 minutes to go up and 3 minutes to go down
- There are 1,076 steps inside the arch, however, they are only used for maintenance and emergencies
- It was originally called the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial now it is the Gateway Arch National Park
- The Memorials to Thomas Jefferson, for his role in opening the West & Dred Scott who sued for his freedom in the Old Courthouse
- Directly across the Mississippi River from the Arch on the Illinois side is the Malcolm W. Martin Memorial Park where the Gateway Geyser (the tallest water fountain in the U.S.) and the Mississippi River Overlook can be found
If you are going through St. Louis, Missouri and have extra time I encourage you to check it out.
TrackRock Campground (Blairsville, GA)
Our family recently had a weekend trip to the TrackRock Campgrounds in Blairsville, Georgia. We left on Friday afternoon and stayed until Sunday. The campground was very nice and well maintained. We arrived after the office closed but they had our name posted with our campsite on the bulletin board.
There was a mix of retired couples and families as well as RVs and tents at the campgrounds. The campsites had enough space and trees around them to give everyone some privacy. We stayed in campsite #10 which had full hookups (water, electricity and sewer) and as a bonus wild blueberries! They were not quite ripe yet, but there were other berries around the property and a blueberry bucket in the office so they are pretty common.
They have a lake you can fish or swim in, a couple playgrounds, hiking trails, and more. TrackRock has their own stables were you can either board your own horse or go for a ride on one of theirs. They have a variety of horse trails.

Brina loving all the animals!
Jake and Karlie waiting for the Animal Show to start
Soft….of course the girls wanted at least one when they found out that they sale them at this location
Fascinating to watch it run awhile!
A lot softer than we expected.

In Memory of Grandma Doris
As I sit here quietly for the first time in awhile I begin to reflect on my Grandma Doris and the multitudes of ways she impacted my life. Part of me doesn’t want to think about life without you in it, but I realize that you will always be a part of my life story and many others. Even though it’s not easy there’s a time to say goodbye….I’ve never been good at goodbyes….
I learned many lessons from Grandma over the years. You gave me the extra confidence to do or be anything I set my mind on. Grandma Doris was truly a one-of-a-kind person. She was unique and loved you in her own way.
Growing up whenever they could Grandpa Verlyn and Grandma Doris would take the time out of their busy schedules to come to see me and the other grand-kids participate in whatever sports, concerts, competitions, or activities we were involved in. I cannot tell you how much this meant to me, just knowing that they cared enough to be there for me and be a part of my life and activities spoke volumes in my life. They have a lot of family members and many spread out over multiple areas so I know it wasn’t always easy or convenient to make it to these events. I never doubted their love (why else would they sit on those hard bleachers to watch us over the years). You knew when Grandma Doris was there….her voice had a way of piercing through all the noise in the crowd and hitting straight into your heart. She would be your loudest and proudest cheerleader in the crowd no matter how good (or bad) you were. It was one of Grandma’s many ways of supporting and encouraging you to be your best.
As a kid we would spend our Christmas Eve’s at Grandpa and Grandma’s house. There was always an amazing spread of food, fun activities, games, gifts and fun. The house was full of many family and friends on any given Holiday. As kids we would often play in the basement while the parents would play games upstairs. One of our favorite games was Ghost in the Darkness…can’t remember who came up with it, but it was fun! If we got too loud or rough we would hear Grandma Doris’ shrill voice and her footsteps on the stairs, it was pretty amazing how quickly all kids were instantly on their best behavior as soon as we heard Grandma coming. I have no idea why Grandma and Grandma went through so many deep freezers when we were kids, but it may have had something to do with the grand-kids using the top of the deep freezer as our safety zone in a variety of games we played while at their house. Oops!
Grandma preferred comfort over elegance in her day to day life but enjoyed getting fancy for special events involving family and friends. Grandma knew how to have a good time.
It was okay with Grandma if her house wasn’t perfect as long as everyone felt welcomed. Anyone was invited to come join the fun adventures at her house whether they we family, friends, or even strangers. If you needed a place to crash for the night, no problem, there’s always room for one more. The more the merrier at Grandma’s.
Grandma wasn’t big on making fancy meals, but could make the best Mayonnaise Cake with Chunky peanut butter frosting. Delicious! When it came to cooking, the quicker the better, as far as Grandma was concerned.
My family lived in Grandpa and Grandma’s basement for several years while my parents were building their house. It was an adventure in itself, but gave me additional opportunities to spend with Grandma which is something I didn’t truly treasure until later in life.
Grandma was a bargain hunting, coke and beanie baby collecting lady. I have often wondered over the years how many McDonald’s or other kids meals she and Grandpa have eaten in her quest to collect the special beanie babies or other cool toys!
Life is precious, life is short. May this be a time to reflect on the special memories, love, and fun times with Grandma Doris. She has made an impact on the hearts and lives of those around her. You were always gracious, giving, and had a strong personality Grandma.
I will always remember Grandma’s smile and cackle that came along with the twinkle in her eyes when she was having fun. Her spunky personality, loyalty to those she loved, spirit of adventure, gift of hospitality, and so much more.
Whenever I see a chicken, I can’t help but think of you, if I ever have a house with a big enough closet I plan to leave my Christmas tree up year round (just in the closet covered with a sheet most of the year – think how much time it would save around the Holidays decorating and un-decorating….genius Grandma!) You always amazed me how you could walk barefoot on the gravel roads, through sticker patches, and more. We always knew when you were walking through the front door with your friendly “YooHoo! Anyone home!” Many times stopping by to say “Hi” or drop off a batch of fresh eggs, garden tomatoes or other items. Disposable cameras, toasty warm home with a crackling fire in the winter, digging out slivers, and even Vicks vapor rub remind me of you.
Thank you Grandma for loving us and leaving your imprint in our hearts and lives over the years. I love you Grandma. May you rest in peace today January 15, 2017 and forever.
The Best Time to Celebrate …
Counting My Blessings: Week In Review
Happy November!!! Not sure how 2016 has flown by so quickly, but here we are in November already. November is a wonderful month to reflect on the blessings that we encounter each and everyday of our lives. Even if you are going through a tough time and you have to look a little deeper there is always something we can be thankful for throughout the day. May this month be not only a time of reflection of the blessings in your life, but that we actively show our gratitude to people around us in our life. Reach out to someone each day this month and genuinely thank them for something they have done that has blessed you or the positive impact they have made or the encouragement that they have been in your life. Maybe if we make it a habit to do this for a month we’ll develop a habit of naturally looking for the blessings and taking time to say thank you to those in our lives throughout the entire year.
It was a wonderful trip to Kansas to visit my parents and extended family, but it is awesome being back home with Jake and the girls again. They picked me up at the airport with smiles, treats, and big hugs. Always nice being back home with the family again. After getting me at the airport we went to dinner at TGI Friday’s. Dinner was fun and relaxing as we shared stories about our adventures the past few days. The girls did homework in the van that way everyone could shower and get ready for the next day as soon as we got home.
I want to be accountable to you so the following are snip-its of some of the things I am thankful for this past week.
Counting My Blessings – Week In Review:
Monday –Thankful for my Mom driving me to the airport, that my flights all went well, and that I was back with Jake and the girls at home once again.
Tuesday – Thankful for a job that allows me to travel occasionally and for co-workers who pitch in to help out while I am gone.
Wednesday – Thankful Jake and everything he does to help out around the house, and with the kids. Enjoy having some down time and catching up at the end of our day together.
Thursday – Thankful that we got to see Karlie perform in her 1st Orchestra Concert tonight. She did awesome! All that practice is starting to pay off. She just started playing too. At the concert she was in several duets and small group performances as well as the entire orchestra.
Friday – Thankful that the girls were able to attend the Student Council Leadership Pep Rally today. They left before school started and got back right as it ended. They had a fun day meeting other student council members from the area, going to workshops, games, and getting to know their student council team members. They were exhausting by the end of the day, but had a grand time. After a long day of work followed by weekly errands with the girls after school it was wonderful to come home and smell dinner cooking and my Handsome Man in the kitchen. He timed it perfectly by the time we had the groceries carried into the house he was ready with dinner and it was DELICIOUS!!! Thank you Babe!
Saturday – Thankful that the girls had an opportunity to do Community Service work through their Student Council Committee today. They scraped and repainted their school’s bases for their flag pole and light posts. Surprisingly they did not come home completely covered in paint (only a few spots of yellow and purple). Grateful for a chance to celebrate fall with the family, instead of dressing up and going Trick-R-Treating on Halloween the girls have chosen to do a family Halloween celebration at home – carving pumpkins, making different flavored pumpkin seeds, a special dinner, and an evening to relax and spend together as a family.
Sunday – Thankful for my family, none of us are perfect and we live in a broken world, yet we have so much to be thankful for each day and having a family as well as a place to call home isn’t something everyone has the privilege to enjoy. Grateful for a chance to hang out with Jake, Brina, and Karlie today as well as prep as we gear up for another busy week ahead.
What are you thankful for today? I encourage you to take the time to write down a few blessings that you have in your life today. It will help cheer you up and turn your focus on the amazing blessings you encounter each day.

Thankful for an opportunity to go back to Kansas for a longer weekend to celebrate my Dad and Niece’s Birthdays. I was able to catch up with a lot of family while back in Kansas. It was nice to have that time with family. Grateful for Jake taking care of the girls when I was away visiting family and celebrating. My flights went smoothly and I arrived safely.
I want to be accountable to you so the following are snip-its of some of the things I am thankful for this past week.
Counting My Blessings – Week In Review:
Monday –Thankful for a job that takes the time to celebrate the special events. Today all the staff brought in food to share and celebrate Boss’s Day, we had a lot of delicious food! Grateful for an opportunity to work on a team with great leaders.
Tuesday – Thankful that the girls were able to have fun after school at their Volleyball Tailgating Party. They went to the tailgating party – played games, ate dinner, and socialized with friends before going to cheer for their friends and team at the game that evening.
Wednesday – Thankful for the girls opportunity to participate in the school’s Diggers Club. They have been working hard selling pumpkins, weeding the school gardens and grounds, putting out mulch, working in the greenhouse, and more fun activities with the club. It is a good place to learn more about serving in their school and community as well as how to grow and maintain various grounds, plants, and more!
Thursday – Thankful for being able to fly out to Kansas to spend a long weekend with my parents. Grateful for Jake picking up the extra kid and household duties while I was away. My airplane flights went smoothly without too many delays and thankful for my Mom driving all the way to Wichita to pick me up at the airport. It was nice seeing her and spending some time on the drive back to my parents house to catch up a little bit.
Friday – Thankful for time in Kansas to spend with family. Was able to spend time with my parents, both sets of grandparents, my siblings, 6 month old niece, and more family while getting some items done with my Mom around the house.
Saturday – Thankful that I was able to be back in Kansas to celebrate my Dad’s 60th Birthday and my niece Annaliese’s 1st Birthday. They had a wonderful turnout of family and friends. It was great seeing so many family and friends over the evening during the birthday celebrate. My sister in law and brother did a lot of prep work to get ready for the party and it turned out awesome.
Sunday – Thankful for a chance to attend my parents church. It was Pastor Karg’s and his family’s last day at the church and it was good to see them, wish them well in their new adventure, and enjoy playing games & celebrating at their Goodbye Party. Was able to eat a nice lunch with my grandparents which was good to see them more and catch up a little bit more over the meal.

Counting My Blessings: Week In Review
It was a fun week with the girls having Monday off from school, we got to play a little more that evening since we didn’t have a bunch of homework we had to wrap up that evening. There were several evening activities this week which made juggling homework, dinner, baths, and everything else a little more tricky, but everyone did well and it helped a ton to have the dinner menu prepped the night before so everything was ready to go once everyone was home in the evenings. Thankful for a husband who pitches in and helps out around the house.
I want to be accountable to you so the following are snip-its of some of the things I am thankful for this past week.

Monday –Thankful that Jake was able to work from home so he could be with the girls, that the girls had a grand time playing outside on their day off (and even got some chores done around the house & yard). We even had a few minutes relaxing – Brina & I played a game (which somehow included jumping jacks, squats, and other activities per Brina’s additions) while Jake and Karlie worked on putting together a model airplane. It was amazing walking into the house after work to the smell of something wonderful cooking in the kitchen, grateful that Jake is willing to cook and makes amazing meals! I am truly blessed!
Tuesday – Thankful for a little bit of extra time at work to tackle some projects since the girls had an after school Student Council volunteer activity today, even finished up some big reports that I had been working on the past several days which felt good!
Wednesday – Thankful for a husband who encourages, it was a tough day and I wasn’t feel well. Grateful for a spouse that loves me even when I am not at my best.
