Travel & Vacation: Amazing Kilimanjaro Safari at Animal Kingdom (Orlando, FL)
Brina ready to head out on the Kilimanjaro Safari at Animal Kingdom
The fast passes were gone for the Kilimanjaro Safari at Animal Kingdom before we decided which day we would be going to the park which is a sign that this is a popular activity. We waited in line for about an hour to go on the safari, but it was very worth it. This is the longest we had to wait for any activity while at Animal Kingdom. During this safari we were able to see real animals in their natural habitats during the expedition through the Safari.
We got to ride out to the safari where many animals were living in the wild. We went through mud, standing water, on “shaky” bridges, and more while seeing animals at every turn. Many of these animals I would not want to meet out in the jungle, however, the animals in this jungle looked well fed, peaceful, and relaxed. It was a wonderful experience. The kids LOVED this and rated the Safari as one of their favorite activities while at Animal Kingdom. If you are ever at Animal Kingdom don’t miss this activity if you like seeing a lot of wild animals fairly close!

Travel & Vacation: Butterfly Garden at Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History
A butterfly getting a drink from the purple flower
While in the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History we visited the Butterfly Garden. Getting into the Museum was free, but it did cost I believe $5 to get into the Butterfly Garden. I wasn’t sure if it was really worth it, however, Jake insisted that the girls should experience it at least once.
Both girls LOVED it! Brina was convinced she could stay there the entire day. It was really neat seeing the butterflies so close and having them land on you. Karlie didn’t mind them landing on her shoe, backpack, or clothes, but when they landed on her skin she didn’t like it. We spent a good amount of time in the Butterfly Garden which was completely enclosed with a variety of plants, flowers, and of course butterflies. If you get a chance to go through it with your kids I highly recommend it.
Waiting in line for the Butterfly Garden!
Brina thought it was hilarious that the butterfly landed on her camera!
Karlie with one on her leg. “Mom, it feels funny can you get it off!” She was not a big fan of them crawling on her skin, but for some reason they liked her legs, ha!
Brina loving it!
Oh no, it’s on my leg again! Mom! For some reason they liked Karlie’s legs!
One landed on the tip of Brina’s finger!
Karlie holding her hand next to the butterfly to see if it will crawl onto her hand.
Fascinating!
I was busy taking pictures when Brina informed me that I had 2 on my shirt!
One butterfly was checking out Brina’s colorful headband! She said she could feel it moving and it was tickling her ear!
The butterflies really liked Brina. She loved this activity!
Karlie’s backpack was a favorite spot for butterflies to land!
Hey, look at this one!
Karlie trying to encourage the butterfly to walk up to her hand so it wouldn’t be on her leg anymore!
This butterfly has a death wish…. I went to take a step when a butterfly decided to land on the bottom of my shoe. I had to hold my foot into this position until one of the workers came with a paint brush and get the butterfly off the bottom of my shoe! Thankfully I noticed before stepping down!
Jake took this picture on the outside of the butterfly garden. Sweet Karlie taking a picture of the butterfly in front of her!
Brina showing Daddy one of the butterflies that landed on her fingers. This is a little cloudy because it was taken through the canopy, but still really cute. She was so excited to show her butterfly to her Dad!
Greenville Gemstone Birthday Celebration
Karlie very carefully picking out the perfect rock bucket to mine today!
I picked the girls up a few minutes early from school on their birthday and took them on an adventure to downtown Greenville. Our first stop was the Greenville Gemstone store. A couple months ago the girls studied about various types of rocks for their Science unit so we thought this would be a fun and educational experience for them. They LOVED mining the gemstones and finding all the cool treasures. It was a great activity. They had a blast identifying the various gemstones they found too.
Getting started on mining their rocks. They were quite excited whenever they found a treasure!
Brina found a huge one and the bonus is it was amethyst which is their birthstone! Cool find on her birthday!
Karlie was so excited and trying to do her mining task it was impossible to get her to look up for the camera. She was having a blast finding all the neat stones!
Brina on the other hand stopped every time she found a treasure to show me. This one was a beautiful green! “Look Mom your favorite color!”
It was hilarious watching both of them! Seeing their expressions and hearing them giggle. Once they found a gemstone they would compare it to the charts that they were given to try and figure out what type of rock it was, there were moments of discussion if they couldn’t figure out which category it fell into.
Karlie pauses for a brief moment to show me some of her latest gemstone finds!
Brina carefully putting each rock into her bag so she doesn’t break any of them.
Karlie still hunting for treasures!
We were thrilled that they enjoyed this fun adventure.
The beautiful gemstones Karlie found during her mining experience!
All the neat gemstones Brina found while mining!
Proud of their cool gemstones. They couldn’t wait to show Daddy their treasures while mining today!
After we finished mining their gemstones we headed for a relaxing walk through downtown Greenville. It was a beautiful sunny day, perfect birthday weather! We made a brief stop in OP Taylor’s Toy Store to check out all their neat toys. Talked with Grandma few a minutes on the phone then went to Mast General Store to pick out 5 pieces of candy out of the barrels. They each picked out different candies and were very good about sharing them so everyone could taste the different candies they found like cow tails and cherry mash just to name a couple!
Game Closet
Our game closet has been cleaned out and re-organized so we can more easily access the games. We got rid of some of the games the girls had outgrown! Some of the games we donated and others we sold at our garage sale or online.
Games have always been a fun activity in our family. It came to our attention a few months ago that it would be beneficial to do a weekly game night with the kids. Playing games, we have noticed, has allowed for extra teachable moments in our family. While everyone wants to play well it’s good to learn how to have fun and be a good sport even if you cannot win every game. There are a lot of positive attributes to playing games such as reading, counting, strategies, waiting turns, being a team player and so much more.
While we play at least once a week on our regular “family game night” ! We often pull out a game when friends are over or at some point (or two) over the weekend. Playing games together allows everyone to relax, spend quality time together, while talking, and creating memories. To keep it fair we roll a dice to see who will be picking the game for the evening. If time allows we may play two games or stretch a game out over several evenings. Our girls look forward to game night every week!
Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder
I just finished reading the book Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder to the girls. They were a little confused when we first started this book because they expected the next book in the series to be about the little girl Laura and her family, not about a boy named Almanzo. Although they were unsure about it at the beginning it only took a chapter to get them hooked and back into the series.
Farmer Boy is book three of the set we are currently reading through with the girls. The book introduces Almanzo, Laura’s future husband. While Laura growing up in a little house on the prairie with her parents and two sisters Almanzo was living on a big farm in New York State with his parents, one brother, and two sisters.
The book is written from Almanzo perspective and goes through many of the things he did as a boy from chopping wood, cutting ice, planting corn, raising a prize pumpkin, training his steers, and much more! The girls found it fascinating reading about Almanzo’s days. They especially liked that he was found of horses.
If you are looking for a fun book to read to your kids (both boys and girls) or have your children read themselves this is a great book. I know the girls will be going back and reading these books again on their own after we finish with the series. They have really enjoyed this series and learning a little bit about how Almanzo grew up fueled their excitement even more!
