Be My Valentine: “I Love You” Memory Jar

A gift I made for Jake many years ago! The rose is from one of our college dates! Are you looking for a unique Valentine’s gift this year packed full of love and memories? I have created jars (or containers) full of memories for various occasions in the past and they have always been a huge hit with both kids and adults. These little containers are easy to make and will be treasured by those who are on the receiving end. It gives your family something to remind them your love and appreciation for them. There are 5 super easy steps on how to make your own Jar of Memories:
- Step 1 – Find 1 jar or container with a lid per person you want to create this gift for. We have used anything from a cleaned out peanut butter jar to cute boxes on clearance from the Dollar Store. Make sure it is a reasonable size so you can easily fill it up.

Karlie's decorated "Memory Jar"! (Made out of a peanut butter container). - Step 2 – Decorate your container. You can decorate with about anything paint, stickers, markers, ribbons, a simple written message on the outside or any other creative decorations.

Papers for the girls "Memory Jars"! - Step 3 – Once you know the size of the container sit down for a few minutes and start writing a list (on paper or the computer) of positive attributes you appreciate in your spouse or child, great memories you’ve shared, phrases of love, and special times with the person your giving the jar to. Put each one on a separate line. I usually keep my list on the computer or with me so I can fill it out over several days as I think of new things to add to it. It is fun to have a good mix of attributes, memories, nicknames, events, etc…. be creative!

Filling up Brina's "Memory Jar"! - Step 4 – After creating a list that is long enough to fill the container you have chosen print the phrases on colorful paper. Cut out the phrases and fold them at least once then stick them into the container. It is a good idea to do this a couple days before in case you need to add more to fill the container. Fill up the container to the top. I like to have it so full it is almost spilling out because when they open the gift it gives them a small visual picture of my overflowing love for them.

Wrap your Memory Jar! - Step 5 – Wrap the container in tissue paper and tie it with a bow or give it to them as is. Take time when they open it to have them to pull out and read some of the great things you have written about them. It is fun to hear them read out loud some of the memories, laughs, and phrases you have included in their jar packed full of memories. Write a special note or favorite saying on the inside. It is sure to bring a smile!
It is important to reflect on the positive traits and memories you have with those you love. I have done this for Valentine’s Day in the past as well as for other special events in our lives. It is a great treasure chest full of positive memories for everyone to enjoy. My husband still has the one I gave him years ago and the girls have theirs on the dresser. Occasionally we will sit together and read through some of their memory notes. When a person knows that they are loved and treasured it allows them the freedom to share the joy with others.
“Be My Valentine” is a series of creative ways you can celebrate Valentine’s Day with those you love. You can make it a special Holiday without spending a lot. Spread a little extra cheer to those around you this Valentine’s Day! Surprise your loved ones with a fun and thoughtful gift from the heart. It is a great time to reflect on sweet memories as well as create new ones with whole family. May this Valentine’s season be bursting with love for you!
Family Recipe: Bean Dip for Chips
My Aunt Michelle St. Clair brought this amazing Bean Dip to my bridal shower. We still make it on occasion when we have guests over. It has a great mix of flavors and usually by the end of the night the dish is empty. The dip tastes best with any type of Corn Chip. It can be used for a party or an appetizer to before a Mexican meal.Bean Dip for Chips
- 2 cans Refried Beans
- 1/4 cup Onion (optional)
- 16 oz Sour Cream
- 1 bottle of Oretoga Taco Sauce
- 1 package finely Grated Cheese (Cheddar)
In a 9 x 13 pan layer the above, refried beans, then onion, then sour cream, the sauce, then cheese on top. Refrigerate for at least two hours before serving with chips. Optional – you can add chopped peppers for additional color and flavor.
A Wild Ride

We took several "taxi" rides during our vacation but the one from the airport to the port was the craziest! The neat part about some of the services at the airport is that their fees are regulated, however, that does not always mean it will be a smooth ride! Since we had a larger group we took two van taxi’s to the boat. Jake, Josh, Dad and I went in the first one and the remaining five took the second one. Our taxi was a dented mini van with smoke bellowing out the back. Unfortunately, there were no working seat belts in the van and at times we felt like we were in a roll cage at an amusement park as we whipped through the streets of downtown San Juan to avoid the traffic on the main highways. We were tracking our movements on google maps, which was pretty funny to watch as we took a zigzag path through the city before arriving at the port. Even though it was a rough ride we arrived at the port in record time. We saw all kinds of interesting sights as we zoomed through the town.
We arrived at the port more than fifteen minutes before the our the party. We were beginning to grow concerned about them since they only left moments behind us. It was only then that we realized that our group was the ones that had all the walkie talkies and cell phones that were still on. The rest of the group had already turned theirs off. Within a few more minutes and what seemed like many mini vans later everyone arrived safely at the port. We were able to check onto the Serenade of the Seas and start exploring!
A hint for those who have never traveled outside of the United States. Bring plenty of $1 dollar bills. You tip for almost everything you do. Even with a wild taxi ride you are expected to tip (some people would pay big bucks to go on a ride like that at an amusement park)! Tipping $1 to $4 each time adds up quickly when you are doing it every day and sometimes multiple times a day. Also, you have to pay for things you get for free in the US, for example, on a tour we stopped at a restaurant and in order to use their restroom you had to buy a drink (a can of Coke was $4.50), purchase a souvenir, or pay $1 per person.
A Vacation To Remember series is a reflection on our recent trip and ways we relaxed. Life is short and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to build memories with family and explore of of the most amazing places during our time away. Go with a good attitude and looking for fun and it will be an awesome trip jammed packed with positive memories. It is refreshing having some time away from the regular routine. Make it a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet new people and learn. You just might see or try something new that takes your breath away!
Fun in Flight

AirTran Flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico On Saturday morning we flew out of Altanta to San Juan, Puerto Rico on AirTran. It was wonderful having direct flights! Flying is a little more intense than it use to be especially with all the extra fees to pick your seat, luggage, etc… plus the additional security procedures you go through prior to arriving at the terminal. We both arrived safe and early for our flight. We met up with my brother Lee and his wife Becky who were coming from Baltimore, thankfully their flight ended up being ahead of schedule so everyone made it.
Overall the check in and flight was smooth and enjoyable. Since it was almost a 4 hour flight we found ways to occupy our time. Jake and I played our first rounds of SORRY! Revenge Card Game which is a card version of “Sorry” the board game. It was a quick game and fun. The following are ways that help us make the time on the airplane “fly”:
- Sleep – it is a great time to catch a few winks of rest while in flight.
- Play a Game – usually we stick to card games like “SORRY Revenge”, “Five Crowns”, “Quiddler”, or other card games if we are playing with 2 or more people. There are plenty of games to play if you are the only one wanting to participate as well such as “Sudoku,” “Mad Libs,” crossword puzzle and more.
- Read or Listen to a Book – catch up on a book you’ve been wanting to read. If you forgot to bring a headset usually the flight attendant can get you a set.
- Listen to Music – it is a relaxing way to pass the time in the air plus it tunes out crying children or snoring adults. If you didn’t bring an MP3 player or something to listen to many of the airplanes have built in channels on the armrest and you can listen to while traveling.
- Watch a Show or Movie – we watched a short show on Jake’s phone (both of us brought headphones but many airplanes will give you one for free). That 40 minutes was fun and went by quickly for us.
- Leisurely Eat your Snack – you are in no rush so take your time savoring the pretzels, cookies or snack and sipping on your beverage. If you want more ask, they are more than happy to serve you. We have even made a game out of the snacks….for example count how many pretzels are in each bag, you would be amazed at the difference between bags!
- Write Your Blog Posts – on the way out I wrote a list of blog topic ideas that I wanted to write about and on the way back I started writing out a couple of the articles I wanted to post soon. It gives you a head start on the topics you are wanting to discuss especially after being gone for a week, the schedule tends to be packed already.
- Update Your Journal or Pictures – if you write in a journal update regarding the adventures you are having. If you are not into journals but have a lot of pictures you took during your time away go through the pictures (I have been known to take some strange pictures) during the flight and delete the ones you know you will never print and do not want.
- Work on a Craft – many crafts are small and can be done in a relatively short amount of time. Have you tried drawing, cross stitching, or other small crafts that you can do while flying.
- Write Notes – write your postcards that you were unable to finish or thank you notes to those who made the trip enjoyable. Everyone loves receiving a hand written note of “thanks” or appreciation! Thankfully I had all my postcards done by this time, however, I had plenty of thank you notes to write! Write the notes, address them (if you know the addresses) and when you get home all you have to do is put a stamp on them and stick them in the mail!
- Read a Magazine – airlines always have a couple to look at and there are many months I don’t have the time to enjoy reading through one of our magazines so flying gives me a good excuse to read a magazine I enjoy from cover to cover if I want!
For those who struggle with the pressure when descending the best item I have ever purchased for airplane trips is ear planes. I had one really bad flight and was in so much pain with all the pressure that I never leave home without my ear planes if I am flying. They really do make the trip so much more pleasant for everyone on your flight! You can purchase them at most pharmacies.
We enjoy time in the air because it gives us an extra opportunity to relax and do some fun activities we normally don’t have time to do at home. So next time you fly sit back, relax, and enjoy those extra few moments of leisure. Who knows when you’ll be able to read several chapters of a book or play a game with your spouse. Our time in flight always goes by quickly, hope yours does too.
We arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico early that afternoon and found a Wendy’s across from the airport where we grabbed a bite for lunch and waited for the rest of our crew to arrive. A couple hours later Dad, Mom, Josh, Jeremy and Amber arrived. Thankfully all the luggage arrived with everyone. The next step was finding a taxi to get us to our boat!

Starting off with a BANG….

Neat pictures - parts of airplanes at the Marriott. We left for our exciting cruise vacation late on a Friday afternoon. We were all packed, loaded in the van, and ready to go only to discover the van would not start. Oh BOY! Not again, the van has already been in the shop two times in the last couple of months. After a quick call to Jake I tried to explain the situation to the girls. They were in tears because they were super excited about starting their vacation together with friends while we were on the cruise.
We decided to all head back inside and have fun while waiting for Daddy to come home. We read a couple books together as we were waiting. Brina picked out a book about a Ballerina and Karlie picked out “The Empire’s New Clothes”. After reading the books we took a few minutes to snuggle and talk. We did a few extra chores around the house then Jake was home. Looking back it was nice to have a few moments of quiet and relaxing time together before leaving. He was able to jump start the van and away we went only a little over an hour off schedule.
We got the girls settled into their new home for the week. They were excited about spending their vacation with friends and had been looking forward to it for a long time. Jake and I started our first leg of our trip together as a couple. The van was a little quiet without the girls giggling and talking in the back but we enjoyed our time together.
On the way we stopped at Flying J for a potty break and to pick up a snack for breakfast the next morning at the airport. We were flying out early and getting checked in and through the security could take up any extra time so we wanted to be prepared. We had a quick but nice supper at Arby’s. It is always smart to bring coupons on vacation with you because you never know where you might stop to eat. It is amazing how much you can save over the course of a trip by using coupons.
The roads under the bridges were still icy from the snow storm earlier that week but we made it safely to Atlanta and checked into
for the night. They have a wonderful program we have used several times where you park your vehicle at the hotel and they drive you to the airport which costs less then parking even in the long term parking at the airport. You can park even if you are not planning on spending the night at the hotel. This was the first time we used it and spent the night. Since we spent the night our parking was free for a week and it was still less then parking at the airport. Plus with the flight leaving early in the morning we wanted to make sure we were at the airport on time. Marriott had a shuttle going to and from the airport every 15 minutes making it convenient to catch a ride when you wanted to leave for the airport. We did all the planning for this ahead of time and reserved the room and parking online. Love being able to get things done before ever leaving on vacation. Many other cities provide this service as well so it may be worth checking into before you fly the next time if you cannot have someone drive you, it really has saved us a lot of money over the last few years.
Jake and I had a wonderful couple hours to relax before getting a good nights sleep. We don’t have a TV in our room at home so we surfed the channels for a few minutes and ended up watching “Bill Cosby’s Himself”. I had never seen it before, for an example of the show click here. It was nice to relax together and just laugh listening to Bill Cosby. We had no where to be until the morning so we relaxed!

A Vacation to Remember

We watched this beautiful sunset as we left South Carolina! Everyone needs a little time away. Seriously, life gets busy and schedules quickly become overloaded. It is important to take some time to relax, enjoy life and create memories. Every vacation is different some are restful while others are jammed packed with activities. Chose the vacation that suites your family. Try to plan a vacation with your family at some point this year even if it is only a long weekend away with your spouse, family, or extended family. You will cherish the memories you make for a lifetime.
My husband and I recently went on a cruise with my parents, my siblings and their spouses. It was wonderful to escape for a week and have fun together. The kids had a blast staying with friends while we were away and had a little vacation of their own away from Mom and Dad. The neat part about a cruise is once you arrive on the boat all your meals are provided, the hospitality is amazing and your room is cleaned multiple times a day. You truly are spoiled!!! My husband and I had a blast spending time with family, meeting new people, exploring the ship and islands. We always had plenty of activities, food, and entertainment. We were rocked to sleep every night as the ship went from island to island and every morning we woke up to a beautiful sunrise over the ocean. We could have continued cruising through the awesome islands, however, we were starting to miss the kids and figured we should get back to the regular routine.
Over the next few days I will be sharing pieces of our recent adventure with you. Some posts will be just for fun while others include helpful tips when traveling and cruising. It was an enjoyable trip and we hope everyone gets an opportunity to go on a cruise at some point. Go ahead start planning out your next family adventure!

Family Recipe: Karen’s Fresh Fruit Dip
If you need a super quick recipe to throw together right before the guests arrive you should try my great Aunt Karen Younger’s Fresh Fruit Dip. It is easy and a hit with everyone. The fruit looks amazing next to the white dip!Karen’s Fresh Fruit Dip
- 1 (8 oz) package Cream Cheese (soften)
- 1 (7 oz) jar Marshmallow Creme
Mix together equal parts of soft cream cheese and marshmallow creme. Stire well together, cut up fresh fruit and dip. Works really well with tart fruit.
My great Aunt Karen added a note on the bottom of recipe – “No double dippers, (smile). Enjoy!”
Love that this recipe is quick, easy and delicious!
Book Character Parade
For the Book Character Parade at school the girls their class featured the book “The Crayon Box that Talked” by Shane Derolf. The kids and teachers dressed up as crayons for the parade. Every class featured a different book. It was a neat seeing the kids get excited about their book. A lot of parents, grandparents, extended family and friends came to watch the kids in the parade.
They each got to pick and color the crayon of their choice. Brina was a pink crayon and Karlie was a blue crayon. It was cute watching them walk in the parade with their classmates. Thankfully the weather was beautiful that day too. I always enjoy participating in the fun events at the girls school. The kiddos are growing up so quickly!
Life Simplified: Meal Delivery

Dessert tray we delivered to a family! Every new year we set goals, challenge ourselves to reach new heights and to focus on what’s really important in life. In 2011 I have made it a goal to simplify my life more by enjoying the blessings and not wasting what God has given me. I will be sharing with you the successes and challenges on those specific areas in my life as I go through them. I have already shared with you my 1st Life Simplified Goal of No Grocery Shopping for the month of January. One of the most rewarding blessings in life is sharing what you have with others. My second Life Simplified Goal goes along with that piece.
My 2nd Life Simplified Goal:
- Deliver 1 Meal a Month to a family outside of our household
Explanation of the Goal: In 2010 I signed up to deliver meals to new Moms after they came home from the hospital, people who had surgery and various other volunteer opportunities. There were a couple months I didn’t do any meals and other months I had several extra meals to prepare. For example, in December I had 4 extra meals to prepare and deliver outside of our home before the week of Christmas, some of them being over an hour away, plus we had a Christmas Eve party at our house and guests staying with us for a week. While I enjoy the blessing of helping others I need to work on saying “No” once I have met my limit. After much prayer and talking with my husband we have decided it would be best for our family if I would stick to 1 meal delivery a month. Once I have delivered a meal in a month I will have to say no to any additional inquiries. There are so many people out there that need help, however, I have to decide what is best for our family too. I want the girls to continue participating in these amazing acts of service and having a limit will give us the freedom to continue to do it without putting our family in a spot we are over our budget. I think with all the people in our church and community that if everyone did just one meal a month for someone needing a meal there would even be extra to go around.
I will continue to deliver meals for people once a month. Below are the opportunities that I am currently and will continue to be involved in:
- Moms with Newborn Babies
- People coming home from Surgery
- Death in the Family
- Other Volunteer Needs for Meal Delivery
I have a hard time saying “no” to someone in need but in order for me to have the opportunity to continue ministering to others in this way I need to stick to the goal as well as respect my husband in his decision to help me with this area I love to volunteer. I will share with you the challenges, successes along the way so you can keep me accountable or you can even go through the journey with me by participating and sharing your story.
Life Simplified is a series on getting rid of the extras in our life while learning how to enjoy what God has given us so we can continue to be a blessing to others. Our homes can quickly start are bursting with “stuff” and if you are like us we just have too much. I am doing a series on ways we are learning to simplifying our food, homes, and lives. When our hearts, lives, and homes get too cluttered we may start missing out on opportunities to serve and bless the people around us.
Take a Nap
As a kid I resisted taking naps. It was about the worst thing my parents could ask me to do. I did everything I could think of to get out of napping or to convince my parents I had slept even though I hadn’t. I am pretty sure they realized it but napping did not appeal to me at all!Now as an adult, when I cannot take naps on a regular basis, it sounds awesome! Isn’t that ironic…. During the busy Holiday Season we get so worn out with the celebrations that people tend to get sick. Now that the schedule is getting back to “normal” try resting a little more. Take a cat nap when you can even if it is only once or twice a week. If you still have kids at home that nap take advantage of that quiet time when they are resting. A 20 minute power nap can give you the extra boost you need to get through the day. On certain days when we know the family will be up late we try to have the girls rest for at least 30 minutes (like on Sundays and Wednesdays).
I have a nap on my schedule in the near future. Do you? You have my permission to take a nap today!
