Relationships: Friendships & Crossroads
The beautiful flower is the one that Brina gave me on Mother’s Day!
I have been thinking a lot lately about relationships and friendships. Part of the reason this has been on my mind a lot is that our girls are going through the process of learning what it means to be a real friend and characteristics of friends. They are slowly, and sometimes painfully, at least from a Moms standpoint, learning the value and qualities portrayed in a true friend.
As they wrap up their final year in elementary school and prepare to move up to Middle School they are realizing that many of the people they know now are going different directions. They are are starting to understand that the friends they have known since Kindergarten are not going to the same schools. Yes, they will see a few people they know next year, but many of the classmates, teachers, and faculty are going to new. A new school, new location, and in some ways a fresh start to the next phase in their life. Kids from their school are going in various different directions some due to location and others family decisions.
I was thinking about friendships and how our lives continually crisscross paths with individuals who become our friends. Sometimes for whatever reason or due to circumstances our paths have to go separate ways, but that doesn’t mean your friendship is lost or that you’ll never see them again. Other times for various reasons it is best to go separate ways. As I was thinking about the conversations I have been having with my kids and ideas of how to encourage them through this transition I came across this little saying by Donna Yea that describes this part of the friendship journey well:
Life is like a journey. We may be walking along a path with friends and then come upon a crossroad where we each must choose the road that is right for each of us individually. At times we may find ourselves walking a path alone, but somewhere along the road we find new friends to walk with, friends to love, friends to grow with, friends to share with. The path of life has many crossroads, and at each one it’s difficult to say good-bye and go our own separate ways, choosing the direction that is right for each of us. But the memory of a friend will always remain, and there is always the chance that our paths will cross again. – Donna Yee
Thankful for writers that can put words down in such a way that they can encourage my heart and let me know that this is normal. Is it easy to go through this stage and process with your kids, no, but it is necessary. Our support as parents and families is essential as our kids learn to grow and adapt to the changes they encounter while they are under our roof. How we handle or don’t handle these little crossroads will make a big impact on our kids. Let’s make this a positive experience for them. One of the hardest times in my life was transitioning to a new High School, but I met some of the most amazing people and friends during those last couple of years that I may have never met had I not been required to switch schools. God is good and will provide those people at the right times and in the right moments.
Mother’s Day Celebration!
Thankful for an opportunity to be a Mom! Being a Mom is an amazing honor and privilege that quite frankly scares me some days. It’s good to know that the call of Motherhood is not a place for us to be alone, but a place where we get the opportunity to live life alongside other Mothers and sisters who can pray, encourage, and support each other throughout this incredible journey.
I am thankful for my Mother and the many Mothers and sisters in my life that continue to make an impact on my heart. We live in a broken world full of broken people therefore it is impossible to be perfect and being a Mom tends to make that oh so clear. It is essential and refreshing to have people who are willing to speak truth and love into your life on a regular basis. I am grateful for each and every one of these ladies in my life.
Breakfast in bed – fresh cherries, fresh pineapple, yogurt, and an omelet (ham, cheese, mushroom, spinach, and tomatoes)! Delicious!
Jake and the girls made my Mother’s Day extra special. I received breakfast in bed, hugs, and well wishes. After breakfast we went to church together and heard a powerful message that hit home in my heart. When we got home Jake and the girls (okay, mostly Jake) made an amazing lunch followed by a relaxing evening. The girls gave me sweet cards, beautiful flowers, a blueberry bush, a swing cushion, and other goodies.
It is not always easy being a Mom, however, there are more good days and great memories than I can count. Some days are a little tough and I get frustrated with myself for not being able to do better, but I never regret becoming a Mom. Motherhood is one of life’s greatest gifts and callings. It is an honor and a little scary at times raising kids.
Although life gets a little crazy at times I wouldn’t change it for anything. It has been a wonderful gift seeing these two little blessings grow up. They continue to amaze me and it is awesome seeing them use their talents.

What’s for Dinner: Our Weekly Menu Plan

SURPRISE!!! I’M BACK!!! Yes, I am still alive and kicking (in case you were wondering)! 🙂 The past few weeks (umm….months really) it has been a little wild around our house. All good stuff, but a lot of transitions, adjustments, work, school, travel, and everything else. Also, was experiencing some technical difficulties with my blog and my IT person was super busy so I didn’t want to bug the daylights out of him. Now that everything seems to be back up and running smoothly again, it is my desire to get everything back up and moving along for you. A big shout out to those who have commented, emailed, called, texted, and checked in with me to make sure I was still alive during this little blogging siesta. A huge THANK YOU for being patient and hanging in here with me as my family made some adjustments. Will have to share more about what has been going on these past few weeks….lots of good stuff and a very full calendar! It gets easier and quieter as the kids get older, right!?
It is my goal to stay on top of our dinner menu once again. We have found a good rhythm for the most part (now that school is wrapping up for the year, ha). We are finalizing several details regarding our summer schedule, but overall I hope to be available and more up to date in the blogging world.
It is nice to have people who help keep me accountable and organized throughout my week. It is encouraging to know that other Moms have to work through all the balancing fun of family, work, home, and a multitude of other activities that I seem to experience. If you have it all figured out, let me know because I would love to be able to get my ducks in order, have a positively balance life in every area plus a happy family and clean house (at least longer than 5 minutes). If you haven’t reached that level yet, no worries, I am there with you. We can do our best and I am going to give it my best shot to stay on top of everything and organized so here we go!!!! Here is our menu plan for the upcoming week:
Our Weekly Menu Plan
- Monday (Beef or Pasta Entree): Crockpot Roast, Mash Potatoes & Brown Gravy
- Tuesday (Seafood or Soup Entree): Tilapia Fillets, Italian Herb Bread
- Wednesday (Chicken or Vegetarian Entree): Sweet & Sour Chicken, Steamed Rice
- Thursday (Pork Entree or Kid‘s Night to Cook): Mesquite BBQ Pork Tenderloin, Green Beans
- Friday, Saturday, & Sunday: Leftovers, Family Preference, and Hosting
I have a general pattern I try to follow for my weekly Menu Plan (for example Monday we have a beef or pasta entree and so forth). It is my goal, at least in the beginning, to have at least the main dish and one side planned. I will put together the remaining side dishes (veggies / fruits) based on the food items that need to be used up first and compliment the main entree.
Setting a weekly menu plan helps me utilize my time better, thus freeing up extra time to spend with my family. On the days that I am working longer hours I can prep the meal in advance so it will be easier to pull together once I am home. As I go through the menu planning process I will try to share some of our favorite family recipes. If there is a specific recipe you would like please let me know and I will do my best to accommodate (some recipes are a toss together meal and I do not use any set measurements).
As a family of four our life can get busy. What’s for Dinner is our weekly menu planning series and one of the ways to help keep us organized, on schedule, and within budget. Our family typically eats 6 to 7 dinner meals at home a week. We do try to go out to eat at least once a month as a special treat. Breakfasts are eaten at home before work and school, lunches are eaten at work, school, or home, so dinner is our main meal together as a family. Dinner is our time to reconnect, share, and enjoy being together after a busy day. Our weekly menu plan covers Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday only because the weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) is our time to spend with family and friends. The weekends tend to be more spontaneous and my husband (who is the better cook) likes pitching in therefore we keep the menu open for variety. We use up the leftovers throughout the week for our lunches and on the nights that we are busy or can’t cook.

Flashback Friday: It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas
Karlie and Brina
The girls were super thrilled with all the neat Christmas items around the house to play with. We were constantly putting Christmas ornaments back on the trees and various decorations back in their place. Their curiosity was peaked and they loved exploring all the cool stuff. The most interesting place we found a Christmas decoration during their first Christmas Holiday was in a diaper. We went to change Karlie one time and she some how managed to get a good chunk of an ornament that she pulled off the tree down her diaper. We think she was chewing on it, dropped it and it fell down in her dress only to re-appear at her next diaper change. We were pretty surprised, but it didn’t seem to bother her at all.

Boy Oh Boy – NICU Time with Sweet Kaelan

Recently, I had the opportunity to spend a week in Colorado with family. My cousin Renelle Broughton (who is like a sister to me) had her little one early and was spending a big part of each day in NICU. I was able to spend time with her, her husband Eric, and their new sweet little one Kaelan! It was a precious time for me.
Words cannot express how honored and truly amazing it was me to spend time with this awesome Momma, caring Dad, and adorable little guy. Not to mention to have the chance to experience NICU from a totally different perspective from when the girls were in it over 10 years ago. Kaelan won my heart immediately and I am grateful for Renelle and Eric opening their home, sharing their precious boy with me, and everything during that crazy busy week.
Thankful for a chance to spend some extra time with my Aunt, Uncle, cousins, my parents, and other extended family over the weekend as well! Wish I lived closer to see them and their little guy grow up. Love you guys! Lots of hugs, kisses, and prayers always from South Carolina! Thankful for an awesome husband Jake Hayes for taking good care of our two chickies while I was in Colorado that week!
Goodies for Kaelan!
Renelle is like a sister to me and it was wonderful spending the week with her.
He was not happy about getting his footprints done and into the baby book, but his tiny little toes looked so stinkin cute afterwards!
Precious time with Renelle and her sweet little bundle of joy. I cannot tell you how amazing this week was for me to spend with her, Eric, and her adorable baby boy!School Activities, “Snow White & The Prince,” and Roller Skating!
Our girls at Falls ParkThese last few weeks have been a whirlwind of fun with Jake & I going on our anniversary cruise, the girls school activities, fun adventures, work, and more! 🙂 Here’s a little snip-it of some of the school and fun activities Brina & Karlie have been up to lately -“Snow White & The Prince” Play at the Peace Center, a School Roller Skating Fundraiser, Beta Club Induction Ceremony just to name a couple. Very proud of both girls for their hard work at school. They were both accepted into Chorus, STEM Club, National Beta Club (for maintaining an A or A-B grades for their past year in school), Library Assistants, Safety Patrol as well as a number of other school related extra-curricular activities. I had no idea how busy 5th grade could be! Thankful for their hard work, positive attitudes, and their love of learning!

Crazy day volunteering at school, watching both girls speak in front of their classmates, teachers, and parents – they did awesome! After running errands, sharing a surprise with someone who has been a blessing to our family, and various other activities I was able to finally sit down, eat a late lunch, and soak in the beautiful sunny Fall view from our back deck. Thankful for the colorful landscape!Flashback Friday: Girls 1st Halloween
We have a cute little Brina Bumblebee and a pretty Karlie Flower
Today we Flashback to October 2005 when the girls were eight months old and celebrating their first Halloween! They were good sports with the Halloween costumes. We really didn’t go “trick or treating” instead we just stopped by to say “hello” to some family in the area that evening. The kids had a lot of fun playing and hanging out a little bit with family.
