Loosening My Grip: Why Can’t I Get Pregnant?
Having kids was always something I looked forward to in my life. Thankfully, I married an amazing man who wanted a family as well. Jake and I were very excited when we decided it was time in our marriage to expand our family. Although we thought it was the perfect time for us to start a family of our own we quickly realized that God had other plans for our lives.
Letting Go of My Personal Agenda
It is funny how we make up the “ideal” time line in our head of how life should happen because we want to feel in control of the situation and schedule, but God often has other plans in mind for us. At this point in our marriage Jake was a developer at a local telecom company and I was working for a real estate attorney. Although, our careers kept us busy they also provided extra stress in our lives. It was hard letting go of my personal agenda regarding having children and allowing God to prune areas of my life during this season.
We Don’t Always Get a Clear Answer
I wanted to have children, and I believe God gives us those desires in life, even though we couldn’t get pregnant. When I pray for something so fervently and specifically it is hard understand or know why God chooses at certain times to say “No” or “Not Now”. The first several months it didn’t bother me too much I would let it roll off while thinking it’s not a big deal maybe next month. In the meantime I am surrounded by wonderful friends and family members that were getting pregnant by just looking at their spouses (not really but it wasn’t a struggle for them). As I was celebrating in their joy month after month then year after year it became more difficult for me. I would be at the grocery store standing in line and a complete stranger next to me would be complaining about “being pregnant” or “what I am suppose to do with another kid” or “kids are just extra stress in your marriage be thankful you don’t have any” or screaming at their kids; each time it was like a knife piercing into my heart just hearing those words or seeing the interactions.
Even Doctors Can Be Puzzled
After about a year Jake and I decided that I should talk to my Ob at my regular visit. The older Doctor was nice about it but just smiled and said it will take time. A year later he was still saying the same thing but he went ahead and prescribed some medicine for me to take to help increase my chances of getting pregnant which made my husband and I hopeful. The medicine ended up making me really sick and after several weeks the doctor said to just stop taking it and wait…….again.
Rejoicing with Others When Your Heart is Heavy
By the time Jake and I had been married several years most of our close friends had already had a baby or more and people (both friends and family) began asking that dreaded question……. “When do you think you’ll have kids?” and/or “Are planning on having kids?” Completely innocent conversational questions right?! Not necessarily, the first time I was asked that question I really didn’t know how to respond. How do you tell a family member or acquaintance “We’ve been trying for several years but God is choosing to not answer my prayer?!” Does God not hear my prayers? Is he answering “No, not now?” or “No, never?” I really didn’t know the answer at that point in my journey.
……this series will be continued next Wednesday!
A little bit more about the Loosening My Grip series
Looking back over the last few years it is much easier to see God’s perfect timing. It was painful waiting, having people constantly ask questions, going to the doctor, praying, dealing with the emotions, and feeling like God didn’t even care.
After much prayer and resistance I have decided to start my “Loosening My Grip” series. I came up with the theme and idea more than a year ago. Every time I start to write a little more on this topic I decide to just not do it. Why?
- It is personal
- I still struggle with many issues in my life and continue to learn of more areas that I need to loosen my grip on
- The feeling of inadequacy to write on the topic
- No one else probably has these issues nor would they want to read about mine
God has been working overtime on me to do it even though my flesh says stay away from certain areas. It is difficult writing about those topics that are really near and dear to our hearts. Most likely the series will not always go in chronological order because I am writing the topics as God lays them on my heart to write. Maybe there is someone out there that has experienced similar struggles or is currently going through this situation in their life. I hope to be an encouragement to you. I want you know that you’re not alone; we have strength and support from a God that is so much bigger than any one of us.
Loosening My Grip is a series on areas in my life I am learning to let go of slowly. Several months ago I was studying Jonah and one of the phrases popped out at me was “Whatever you are holding on to in this life, hold it loosely so it won’t hurt when the Lord has to pry your fingers open to take it away.” I have found that in some areas God has had to pry my fingers off of whatever I am holding onto one finger at a time. There are areas in my life that I feel like I need control over and hold onto them tightly when God really has something so much more beautiful in store for me. I have been learning how to let go and hold onto things more loosely so God can do His work in my life.

Travel & Vacation: Welcome Home Mom & Dad

I love having some time with my handsome man but coming home is AWESOME too! Jake and I had the opportunity to get away for a few days several months ago. We took a cruise with extended family and the girls stayed with friends. Our plane came in the late to Atlanta and we arrived home in the middle of the night so we were not able to see the girls until the next morning. The girls came walking up the sidewalk carrying this HUGE “Welcome Home Mom & Dad” banner that they had made for us. We were thrilled to see them and loved the cute banner. They had a BLAST with our friends and made a lot of great memories. The girls told me I need to get all Aunt Ashley’s recipes because she made the best food while we were away.

Our friends (and the girls) brought us Dunkin Donuts for breakfast, so sweet! Jake and I were thankful for the chance to get away for a few days and we couldn’t have done it without the help of our friends. They took great care of the girls (actually I am not sure if they were ready to come home yet, ha). We are blessed to have amazing people in our lives. Thanks Mike and Ashley!!!

Our sweet Welcome Home banner the girls made for us! Life has been really busy. As I was going back over some of the pictures from earlier in the year I found ones that I wanted to share. The time away from home with your spouse is important, necessary and refreshing, however, coming home to two sweet girls is a huge blessing!

Book: “Space – The Ultimate Guide To The Universe”
One of our girls loves planets, space and astronauts. A family member gave her the “Space: The Ultimate Guide To The Universe” book a few years ago and it has been a huge hit! It has been carried all over the house and gone on several road trips with us. The book has pictures and information about space travel, astronomy, universe, solar system, stars and galaxies as well as posters of the universe and glow in the dark stars. It has a lot of information packed in the variety of descriptions and colorful pictures. The recommended age for the book is for 8 and up but if you have a child that loves space, astronauts, and planets then I would recommend it for them even at a younger age. You’ll have to read it to a younger child but if they enjoy space as much as Karlie does then it will be a hit, not to mention educational!

Recipe: Crockpot Pearsauce

Homemade Pearsauce Our neighbors were generous and gave us a bunch of delicious pears from their tree. The girls were thrilled to have pears to eat. It is amazing the variety of yummy treats you can make out of pears from sliced pears to smoothies and more.
The girls LOVE applesauce so I decided to try my hand at making Pearsauce (much like Applesauce but with pears). You can do this with fresh picked pears or ones that you buy on clearance at your local grocery store. I was thrilled at how well the recipe turn out which is perfect for lunches and as a side for meals.
Crockpot Pearsauce:
- 4 Pears
- 1 tablespoon Lemon Juice (or 1 fresh squeezed Lemon)
- 1 tablespoon Brown Sugar
- 1/2 cup Water
- 2 Cinnamon Sticks (or 1 tablespoon Ground Cinnamon)
1. Wash the pears. Peel, core and cut your pears into cubes.
2. Put the pears in the crockpot. Mix the lemon juice and water together then pour over the pears. Sprinkle the top of the pears with Brown Sugar. Place the cinnamon sticks on top (or sprinkle ground cinnamon)
3. Cover and cook on low for 4 to 6 hours. When the pears are soft, drain any extra liquid, mash them with a potato masher, fork, or blender.
4. Store in an airtight container or bag in the refrigerator or freeze to enjoy at a later date.
I tripled the recipe to fill up the crockpot since we had quite a few pears. You can add more or less of the cinnamon based on your family’s preference. It is a pretty easy recipe. Love being able to leave it in the crockpot and come home to a wonderful smelling house.

Bowl of fresh pears from our neighbors tree, thank you for sharing! Wash the pears

Peel the pears I used a potato peeler to peel the skins off the pears. It was really easy to get them off.

Cut up pears Quarter the pears then cut them into cube like shapes.

Crockpot full of fresh pears. I filled up the crockpot with sliced fresh pears. Squeeze out the lemon juice and mix it with water then pour it over the pears in the crockpot.

Adding the final touches before cooking. Sprinkle the brown sugar over the pears and add the two sticks of cinnamon (or sprinkle ground cinnamon over pears)

Ready to Cook the Pearsauce Cook in a crockpot on low for 4 to 6 hours until tender then mash, blend, or mix to make into a pearsauce (or applesauce) like consistency.

Close up of our first batch of Pearsauce You can make it smoother or chunkier based on your family’s preference. The house smelled amazing when the pearsauce was cooking. The girls had their first helping the next morning for breakfast and asked if there would be enough to eat for lunch and dinner! I am very excited it turned out so well! I divided this batch up – some to eat this weekend, froze a container full for later and filled up several small containers to stick in the girls and Jake’s lunches. A big thanks to our sweet neighbors for sharing their pears with us!

Yard Sale Deals: Clothes & Shoes

Some of the coordinating items we picked up at a local yard sale! I was thrilled at the neat people I met during some of my yard sale adventures. One yard sale I went to this summer had twin girls that were a year older then my girls. The best part about shopping at their yard sale is I was able to stock up on some coordinating clothes for the girls from sweaters to jeans, shirts, skirts, boots, and even clogs!
I purchase 63 pieces (including shoes) for $12.00 making them approximately 19 cents each. The red clogs are super cute too, we’ll see how well the girls like them! These items are perfect for the upcoming school year and are in good condition.
The day I went to this yard sale was overcast and raining until after 7 am that morning. Half of the places I went to never even brought out their items so it was a slower day. The yard sale where these items were discovered was just starting and it was after 10:30 am on Saturday. They were just pulling out their items and setting up. I am glad that we took a few moments to check this one out, it really was a great way for me to stock up on clothing for the girls.
