Vacation & Travel: Korean & Abraham Lincoln Memorials
Etched in the granite on the Korean War Memorial are the words “Freedom Is Not Free”
While in Washington, D.C. we went to several memorials. One of the memorials we visited the first day was the Korean War Veterans Memorial. As we were walking up to look at the memorial we ran into Park Ranger JoAnn. She asked if the girls would like for her to walk around the memorial with them and tell them more about the memorial. The girls were thrilled to soak in more information from the park ranger. She did great with the girls, answered all their questions, and made it fun for them too.
Park Ranger “JoAnn” taking the girls through the Korean War Memorial. She was super sweet and explained a lot of neat details to the girls!
One of the benefits to walking through the Memorial with a Park Ranger is that we got a lot of great information about the memorial that we probably wouldn’t have figured out on our own by just walking through. It did take a few minutes longer, however, it was really worth it and the kids enjoyed hearing the specific details that went into making the memorial special for the soldiers who fought in the Korean War. The granite wall is in the shape of a triangle intersecting a circle. The wall has over two thousand images etched into it that represent soldiers who served in the war from all divisions. The etches were amazing.
Inside a triangle shaped area across the sidewalk from the wall are 19 stainless steel statues designed by F. C. Gaylord in 1994. Each soldier represents all of the American service branches dressed in their specific uniforms. The soldiers are over 7 feet tall and weigh almost 1,000 pounds. The bushes on the ground around the soldiers reflects what the ground looked like in Korean during the war. One of the soldiers has designer Frank Gaylord’s initials and date carved into it.
Listening to all the information. On the opposite side of the wall (where the wreaths are located) are listed the 22 United Nation countries who were involved in the Korean War. The wreaths are not always there, but we came during the week of July 4th.
Karlie listening to what Park Ranger JoAnn is saying while Brina tries to count the reflections of the soldiers on the granite memorial.
When the images of the 19 statues reflect on the memorial wall it appears that there are 38 soldiers which represents the 38th parallel where the war was fought.
The Korean War Memorial is near the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool (an easy walking distance and the closest restroom too). Thankful for park rangers and their willingness to share pieces of history with kids. Our family really enjoyed learning more!
We made it to the steps of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial. The girls are excited to see Lincoln’s memorial!

Brina and Karlie impressed by the size of Abraham Lincoln’s Memorial
Mommy and her girls! It is so much fun exploring and seeing these great places with the kids now that they know more of their history.
Sitting below Lincoln’s famous speech! “Four score and seven years ago….”
We had a blast exploring many awesome places in Washington, D.C. There is so much to do and see! We started early that morning and packed in as much as possible. We made sure to have plenty of liquids and snacks to help keep us going throughout the day. The girls even wore their own camel backs with water and snacks. They were troopers as we bounced around D.C.
Fun at the Lake in Connecticut!
Brina hoping to catch something in the lake!
Our family was able to stop for a few hours in Connecticut this summer. Jake’s Dad lives in CT and we wanted to catch up since we were driving through on our way back home. The girls were excited to spend some time with Grandpa Tim and the rest of the crew at the lake. It was a beautiful sunny day and the lake was gorgeous. The perfect day to hang out at the lake! We had a wonderful time visiting, playing at the lake, eating delicious food, shooting off the cannon, and more! It was great getting a chance to hang out for a few hours!
Karlie was determined to catch a fish with her net. They were really fast though!
Splashing around in the lake while Grandpa Tim cools off!
Jake and Karlie went for a ride in the canoe
They did a great job out on the lake, but they got a little wet when trying to dock. I didn’t get a picture of them flipping out of the canoe when they were getting out because I was trying to help, but it did provide some good laughs watching them!
Grandpa Tim sitting up the cannon! Oh boy! Super excited to watch the cannon fire.
Grandpa Tim wanted to try out these cool shots that he got at a garage sale. At first we thought they were duds…..however, a few seconds after the initial shot there was a huge explosion and water came spraying up from the lake. I would say they were really well! Better make sure the lake is clear before firing another one!
Grandpa Tim was standing right next the cannon when he reached back to pull it back up the hill by the string a little bit, but instead set the cannon off making another big and loud explosion in front of us on the lake. He was surprised, but thankfully not hurt (other than the ringing in his ears from being so close to it when it went off). Once everyone knew Grandpa was okay everyone was laughing hysterically. The expression on Grandpa Tim’s face was priceless when he unexpectedly set off the cannon. Thankfully, everyone was okay and it is something we can laugh about now!
Karlie’s turn to shoot off the cannon! The girls loved the cannon! They haven’t set one off before so it was a lot of fun for them!
My Little Pony goodies, the perfect gift for the long road trip home! Thankful for a wonderful day with family in CT.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Happy Valentine’s Day Girls! They were greeted by the little treats left on their bar stools when they walked into the kitchen for breakfast!
Valentine’s Day is a great day to celebrate with the ones you love! We don’t usually do anything huge on Valentine’s Day, but we do try to take time to make it special for the kids as well as have some time together as a couple too. Spending time with the ones you love, showing, and telling them how much you love them shouldn’t only be done on Valentine’s Day!
“Owl Be Your Valentine” goody bags for the kiddos!
They are awake and ready for breakfast!
A fun Valentine’s Day breakfast!
Christmas Tree Ornaments
Thanks to my sweet cousin Renelle the girls got a cool Christmas Ornament craft this year. Renelle sent glass ornaments and some paint so the girls could make their own Christmas tree ornaments. They had a blast making these ornaments! The ornaments turned out beautifully too!
The ornaments have a tie die and swirl mix of several colors. Brina and Karlie were so excited to have these hanging on the tree. Both girls agree that they want to do more of these or another Christmas tree ornament next year!
Karlie squeezing paint into her ornament
Take the glass ornaments and slowly squeeze paint into them. Add at least 2 or more colors and swirl around until the glass ornament is coated on the inside.
Brina making sure the paint is covering the entire glass
After adding paint rotate the ornament around until the paint has coated the entire inside of the ornament. The colors will start to blend as you do this which is very fascinating for the kids to watch.
Karlie swirling and coating the inside of her glass ornament with paint
The colors blend together and look pretty neat together.
Turn the ornament upside down in a styrofoam cup or muffin pan so the extra paint can drain.
Every few hours flip the glass ornament the opposite direction so the paint will dry evenly inside the bulb

The girls did a fabulous job making these ornaments.
Colorful and looking great on the Christmas tree
The colors merged beautifully on their glass ornaments
Thanks Renelle for an amazing craft! The girls had a craft and they turned out beautifully!
Family Game – Ticket to Ride
We got a game from my parents this Christmas called Ticket to Ride. We’ve already played the game a couple of times and the kids love it! It is a great game plus it is educational. The girls have had fun learning the names of different cities across the map. We even went through the map and pointed out all the places listed that we have been too together. So cool looking at the map of the United States and laughing at all the great memories.
The board full of a rainbow of trains. Karlie got the longest train and Brina was able to block her parents yet Jake still managed to pull off a win this round. Although Brina was the champion our first round. I had a lot of fun, but unfortunately I am not an expert at strategies with this game yet. Love playing games and spending time with my family.
This is a great family game. If you are looking for a wonderful and educational family game I would recommend it. Our girls are 8 and they can play the game on their own yet it is enjoyable for us as parents too.
Welcome New Year 2014!
We had a fun time bringing in the New Year! It started a little later than we expected because Jake was on call with work, but we were able to pack in a lot of games, snacks, a play, and more exciting activities into the evening. The girls stayed up until midnight again this year to watch the ball drop and bring in the 2014 New Year! They were super excited to start the New Year with confetti!
We talked about all the amazing memories we had in 2013. All of us agreed that 2013 was an awesome year and we packed in a lot of great memories together as a family. Several fun trips – a cruise, Vermont, Charleston, Kansas, Atlanta, North Carolina, and more! We are truly blessed and have so much to be grateful for in our lives.
We discussed goals and what we are looking forward to in 2014. The girls decided they wanted to think of at least one goal for 2014. They took a whole 2 seconds to come up with at least one of their goals.
Brina’s first goal – “Spend more time outside! I love playing and being outside!”
Karlie’s first goal – “Read more books with 400 or more pages!”
The girls make me smile because in many ways they couldn’t be more different! One of the themes for 2014 Brina suggested was “Anything Can Happen!” Thankful for our girls and the opportunity to bring in the New Year with them. I am looking forward to seeing what God has for our family this upcoming year.
The confetti was a lot of fun and I am sure it will spread itself through the house even though we tried to sweep it up.
Creative Kids: New Hot Pads!
Karlie’s colorful hot pad she made!
The other day I was working on several items that needed to be done so the girls took some time to do some crafts. I wasn’t sure what they were up to, but they were staying busy and being good. The next morning I was presented with two brand new colorful hot pads! One that Karlie had made and one from Brina! What a special treat it is to get such a sweet gift first thing in the morning. Thankful for my thoughtful girls. I am very blessed and will think of them every time I use their beautiful hot pads.
Brina’s new hot pad she made for me!
My beautiful new hot pads! Love them and especially love the two sweet girls that made them for me.
Chef Brina
Brina loves helping in the kitchen. The other day she wanted to make blueberry pancakes for breakfast. She did Christmas shapes and the letters for each family member which was a lot of fun. The pancakes turned out amazing. She did an awesome job making breakfast. Love seeing my girls get excited about helping in the kitchen. They are growing up fast and learning so much. I have really been enjoying having my girls home for the Christmas Holiday.

Jake got a candy cane – the red is blended strawberries (love using strawberries on our pancakes!)
