November 30-30-30 Challenge: Saying Thanks 30 Ways to 30 People for 30 Days (Day 4 & 5)
As I was reflecting back on the many amazing blessings in my life I realized that don’t let those around me know how much I truly appreciate them enough. The idea of participating in a “thankfulness” challenge for the month of November was started a few months ago when I purchased cards for my family to send out for the Thanksgiving Holiday (see the picture of the front of the card below).
It is my wish to show my gratitude to the people I interact with day to day. For the month of November I am planning a 30-30-30 Challenge. It is my goal to say thanks in 30 ways to 30 people for 30 days. Each day I plan to do at least one activity expressing my thanks to one person every day for thirty days.
Day 1
Who: Hair Stylist
I needed a hair cut after putting it off for several weeks so I headed to the salon. My hair has a pretty simple and easy cut so it usually only takes a few minutes for a hair stylist. I had never met the person who cut my hair before, but took the time to learn a little bit about her. She has two small kids, ages 2 and 6. For my expression of thanks today I made it a point to give her a generous tip and tell her “thank you”.
Day 2
Who: My Spouse – Jake
I am so thankful for everything Jake does for our family. He works really hard, is an awesome Dad to our girls, and loves me. Jake is my best friend and I am very grateful for him. He takes good care of all of us and I don’t tell him “thanks” enough. Today I gave him a hand written thank you card and a bag of chocolate truffles.
Day 3
Who: Daughters – Brina & Karlie
I am very thankful for my two girls! They light up my world, make me laugh, and help build extra character in my life. It took many prayers and a few tears before God gave these two precious blessings in my life. You can read more about my journey with my Loosening My Grip: Why Can’t I Get Pregnant? series. As a way of saying thank you to the girls I gave them thank you notes and spent time reading some of our current book Little House in the Big Woods together.

In everything give thanks!

More information about “Say Anything” game:
Say Anything is a great party game to play with your family and friends! You will find yourself laughing as you read the wide variety of answers to each question. The game is made for 3 to 8 players and takes about 30 minutes to play. I would recommend if younger kids are playing that they are able to read and write answers independently (otherwise they may need additional help). The game is recommended for ages 10 and up.
- Ask any question from the card you draw, such as “What’s the best movie of all time?” or “If I could have a BIG anything, what would it be?”
- Everyone else writes an answer and turns it face-up.
- Secretly choose your favorite of these answers. Then everyone tries to guess which one you picked.

Guest “Welcome” Basket
Welcome Basket
Occasionally we have missionaries, family, or friends staying with us that have been or will be traveling. When they stop by for a few days or weeks we try to make sure to have a “welcome” letter and basket full of goodies for them to use. They can go through the basket and pick out any items that their family can use or take with them. If there are some items that they won’t use they can give them away or leave them.
One of the best parts about shopping the sales and using coupons is you have an opportunity to be a blessing to people that you meet. I love being able to pack a basket full of products for our guests to pick out what they want or need. It saves them a little cash plus they don’t need to make that extra trip to the store.
Here are some of the items in the basket pictured above that was beside the guest bed for a family earlier this year:

Our family doesn’t have everything money can buy, but we have been richly blessed with many items so it is a real treat being able to share what we have with others. If there is something specific I know a guest enjoys (food, products, or other items) I do my best to make sure it is available for them when they arrive. I don’t always remember (or get it right) but I think it helps make your guests feel welcome when you have something to welcome them into your home. If I don’t have a basket ready for them I try to put out a note or something little on the bed or in the guest bathroom for them. How do you make your guests feel welcome when they come to stay in your home?

Book: “VeggieTales Family Devotional” by Cindy Kenney and Doug Peterson
Our family has recently finished the Veggie Tales Family Devotional by Cindy Kenney and Doug Peterson. The subtitle to this book is “connecting to a powerful relationship with God.” The book has several familiar Veggie Tale characters in it that you kids will recognize if they have ever seen any of the Veggie Tale videos. The book is divided up into 7 parts.
- Part One – Faith
- Part Two – Communication
- Part Three – Love
- Part Four – Trust
- Part Five – Time
- Part Six – Joy
- Part Seven – Holidays
The devotional is for ages 4 to 10. There are 52 devotionals in the book. The book has colorful pictures for the kids to look at while listening. Each devotional has the following:
- Story
- God Connection
- What Does the Bible Say?
- Family Fun Connection
- Cucumber Connection
- Bible Verse
- Think – Link – Act
Our girls loved this devotional book. There were several lessons that inspired more conversations about God, prayer, salvation and more. I know that it is tough with life’s busy schedule to take the extra time to have devotions with our children, but it is my hope and prayer that these lessons and time together will have a lasting impact on the hearts and lives of my children. I can’t say that we do devotions every single night (we are FAR from perfect parents), however, it is something we really try to do with our girls as often as possible because we believe it is important. If you are looking for a new devotional book this is one you might want to check out.
Kids “Welcome” Buckets
Goodies for the kids (nieces, nephew, and our girls)
I love having family come visit us! 🙂 Earlier this year Jake’s sister and her family came to stay with us for a couple weeks. The kids LOVED having extra time playing together.
Before they arrived I picked out some buckets for the kids, put their names on it, and had them ready for their arrival. Every day all five kids got a little toy, items, candy, etc…. in their buckets. As you can see from the picture the first day the kids got their buckets, a new water bottle with their names on it, and marshmallow twist candy.
The kids had a blast checking their buckets every day. Before long the buckets were overflowing with goodies. I had a lot of fun putting together the treats for the kids too!
I am thankful for the opportunity to spend a little extra time with family. It is always fun being able to “spoil” my nieces and nephews for a few days. A lot of great memories were made during their time at our house!
Game: “Carcassonne” by Rio Grande Games
Our family loves playing games! Whether it is a card, board or video game we always look forward to having a chance to sit down with family and friends. Carcassonne by Rio Grande Games is a fun board game that we enjoy playing. We found this board game after spending a lot of time playing Settlers of Catan, it looked similar so we decided to try it out.
Carcassonne is based on the famous French city of Carcassonne that is well known for its roman and medieval fortifications. The game is for between 2 to 5 players ages 8 and up. Each player gets a tile on his turn and can lay it down to build roads, cities, and more. The tiles are chosen at random, however, the player can choose where to place the tile and what to play on it. The game is fascinating for younger kids to watch too because it starts with 1 piece and grows bigger as people build the cities and surrounding areas until everything is linked together like one big interactive puzzle.
If you are a fan of Settlers of Catan or another similar game I highly recommend that you check out Carcassonne for your next game night or get it as a gift for the game lover on your list.
