• Organized Chaos: Keeping Track of Water Bottles

    Organized Chaos - Water Bottles - P1410648c

    Labeled Water Bottles

Since we have two kids the same age and gender they have several items that are identical.  A common identical item that both kids have are their water bottles.  Like the blue water bottles with the owls on the outside pictured above.  A few months ago we had some issues with everybody using whatever water bottle they wanted (even if it was their sister’s), however, during the course of the school day their sister’s water bottle would get dropped, dented, scratched, broken, or misplaced. The next time that sister wanted to use her water bottle it was gone or had additional marks on it.

I know it seems crazy, but there have been some serious discussions between the two kids in our house over damaged or lost special water bottles.  I am pretty sure no other household has these types of discussions in their home, but there were a few times I had to intervene in these conversations.  Although, items will get dropped or damaged the more they are used I had to find a solution so that these discussions would not be happening on a regular basis in our house. Prior to this year neither child cared which water bottle they took, but the older they get the more they want their items to look good and last longer.  I am happy they they want to take good care of their items we just had to find a method to track which water bottle belonged to who.

My initial solution to the problem super easy, took only a couple seconds, and was very inexpensive.  I wrote their names on the special water bottles with a permanent black sharpie.  The names were written on the bottoms and / or sides of the water bottles so that each kid could easily see if it was theirs before taking it out of the drawer.  It was amazing how quickly the issue was resolved, however, after a several washings the permanent marker would wear off making it harder to tell whose water bottle it was again. Now I use several different methods to identify or keep track of the special water bottles:

    • Write the Names on the Water Bottles with Black Permanent Marker (easy and inexpensive, but washes off over time)
    • Use a washable Label with their Individual Names Printer on it – My personal favorite are the thin Lovable Labels ones because they stay on through MANY washes (anywhere from a few months to years as long as your kids don’t try peeling them off)
    • Purchase water bottles with their Names printed or engraved on them (usually more expensive, but works really well). My favorite place to get printed or engraved names on water bottles is Oriental Trading.

There are several generic water bottles that anybody can use at any time in the drawer, however, the special ones have each child’s name on them.  The special water bottles usually have the child’s name written in permanent sharpie on the bottom and a label (or name printed / engraved) on the side of the water bottle.  Occasionally someone accidentally picks up the wrong water bottle, but for the most part everyone uses their own or a generic one.

Now if they lose or damage their water bottle then they are the only ones inconvenienced by their actions.  One of our kids tends to be a little rougher on water bottles (clipping or tying them to her book bag which is bumped against everything in its path, dropping, or just forgetting it).  She has gotten a lot better as she is getting older, but I have to smile when she brings home just the water bottle top because I know that means the water bottle itself did not survive it’s nose dive to the concrete floor at school.

  • Travel & Vacation: Road Trip Snack Container

Have I mentioned before how much we enjoy traveling???  🙂  We have been blessed with a number of opportunities to travel over the past few years.  On a quick side note – While it is great to get away and explore new places it is always wonderful coming home.

You may have noticed one of my previous posts about these Road Trip Snack Containers here or here, but I want to encourage anyone with kids who take roads trips to try these out.  These have come in very handy over the past few years at our house.

The girls are always super excited to see what I have packed in their snack containers.  It helps with the “I’m Hungry” statement you hear in the middle of a road trip and it allows you to pack a little container for each kid instead of bringing the whole box of crackers or nuts or whatever it is you typically bring.  Plus it gives the kids a variety of snacks to choose from, kids really do love having choices!

The girls have yet to finish an entire snack container on the trip so usually it provides snacks throughout the time you are away too.  It always surprises me what they choose to eat first.  I cannot count the number times that they go for the nuts or fruit over any of the sweet treats.

One Child’s Road Trip Snack Container

Items that we packed for this road trip:

    • Animal Crackers
    • Raisins
    • Whole Cashews (without shells)
    • Fruit Marshmallow Bites
    • Cheesy Bugles
    • Fruit by the Foot
    • Peanuts
    • Sweet Tarts
    • Chocolate & Mint Swirl Marshmallows
    • Golden Raisins
    • Chocolate Covered Raisins
    • Whole Peanuts (with shells)
    • Fruit Chews
    • Whole Pecans (without shells)
    • Ritz Crackers
    • Whole Pistachios (with shells)
    • Organic Applesauce (in a squeeze bag)
    • Flavored Peanuts

    • Rainbow coated Sunflower Seeds
    • Ritz Bites Peanut Butter Crackers
    • Rice Krispie Treat
    • 2 Million Dollar Mints

All packed and ready to close up so we can put them on the girls car seats before we go to bed!

We don’t stop a lot on road trips unless we need gas, go to the bathroom, or for a quick meal (a lot of times we’ll pack a picnic lunch to eat on the way).  The kids are content to read, work on workbooks, play games, or occasionally watch a movie if it is a long road trip (our rule is that the trip needs to be 5 hours or longer before a movie is part of it).

We picked up the containers at Walmart for a couple of dollars.  The stickers were at Hobby Lobby in the scrapbook section and we used a 40% coupon.  We have used these Road Trip Snack Bins for several road trips with our girls and they have held up well.  Once the trip is over and they have finished eating the items in the bins all you have to do is wash them and store until the next family adventure.  It is a blessing to be able to travel with our family.  We have created many amazing family memories on the road together.

  • Travel & Vacation: Road Trip Snack Bins

Karlie and Brina’s travel snack packs

When we go on a road trip I pack the girls snack bins and put them on their seats the night before.  They always enjoy checking out the goodies in their snack bins as soon as they get into the car.  The nice part about having snacks always in the car on road trips is it saves time and we don’t have to stop as often along the way for a bite to eat.

  • Fresh & Healthy: Lunch Box Meals

Lunch Box – Chicken Salad Sandwich, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Banana, Yogurt, Lime Jello, CheezIt Crackers, and Boost

With the second semester of school in full swing I am back to doing school lunches again every day.  Someone asked me what I send with the girls in their lunch boxes and asked if I could share some of my ideas.  Their lunches are not fancy, but I try to make them well balanced and fun.  Here is another post on school lunches.  In every lunch I pack a meat or protein, diary, fruit, vegetable, snack, and drink.

Lunch Box – Chicken Salad Sandwich, Banana, Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Yogurt, Lime Jello, CheezIt Crackers, and Capri Sun Juice

Occasionally I will pick up some character sandwich bags at the Dollar Tree or other stores just for fun to add to the girls lunches.  The girls love getting Princess, Dora, Tinkerbell, Lightening McQueen, and a variety of other character lunches baggies in their lunch boxes.  Sometimes I will get great sandwich bread on clearance at the store and make what the girls call “football sandwiches” for an special treat as well (pictured below).

  • Living on a Budget: Sav-Mor Sidewalk Box Sale

Stock Up Your Pantry with Sav-Mor's Sidewalk Box Sale!

Sav Mor has been doing their Box Sale for several years now.  They will occasionally offer additional discounts as well.   For example, at the last sale you could get a case of Tortilla Chips for $2.00 which meant you were getting the chips for 25 cents per bag.  The above picture is from one our are recent trips to their sale (further description of what all is in the picture is given at the end of the post after the information section).

More information about the Box Sale for those in the Greenville / Upstate Area:

    • What is it? Sav Mor does a Sidewalk Box Sale every couple of weeks where you can purchase a box full of food, health, household, baby items for a set price.  The parking lot beside Sav Mor has rows of banana boxes filled with overstock, dented, expired, or unwanted items from local grocery stores (Ingles, Whole Foods, Bi-Lo, and more) in the Greenville area.
    • Where is it located / Contact Information? The parking lot at Sav-Mor, 2117 Wade Hampton Blvd, Greenville, SC 29615.  Phone:  864-244-6128
    • How Does It Work?
    1. The day of the sale customers pick which aisle they want to go down (based on what you need, for example, if you need cereal you choose an aisle that has a lot of cereal boxes in it) and everyone lines up around the perimeter of the banana boxes.  It is good to ask the person (or people) in front of you which box they are going for prior to starting to avoid going after the exact same box.  A lot of the boxes within that aisle will contain similar items.
    2. Approximately 5 to 10 minutes before the sale “starts” a Sav-Mor representative will Welcome everyone, explain the rules, tell about any extra deals (for example, the case of chips for $2.00) followed by the store manager announcing a few of the current deals they offer at their store.
    3. Right at 9:00 AM they will blow the horn and / or say “GO” and you go as quickly as you can and fill up your banana box with as much food, health, household, and baby items that you can find.  You can fill as many boxes as you want (we typically consolidate down to 2 boxes at $7 each).  Your boxes must be level prior to paying, I have heard that they will stop you if it is too full although we have never had them stop us so I guess we are what they consider to be level (a potato chip bag may be sticking up a little bit, you should be able to get plenty in the box)
    4. They will have a different variety of groceries and other items each time.  It is common to see Cereals, Crackers, Pasta, Can Goods, Baby Items, Salad Dressing, Sauces, Gravies, etc… every time.
    5. You can fill your banana box a couple different ways.  Some people take an empty banana box and fill it with the items they want.  What has worked for us in the past is to grab an already packed banana box, pull it to the side and once we have found 3 or 4 boxes that have items that we want in them we’ll go through the boxes and consolidate the 3 to 4 boxes down to 1 or 2.  The items that you don’t want you put back into the middle and someone else can come take them for their box.  (For example, we had visitors coming and we wanted to get some snacks and juice boxes, Jake grabbed a box that looked like it was full of juice boxes, however, underneath the top layer of juice boxes was kitty litter which wasn’t something we need.)
    6. Once you have sorted, consolidated, and packed your box you can check out.  They will have shopping carts for you to use or you can carry the boxes (we just carry them).  You pay the store representative cash as you walk out of the area and to your car.
    • When Is It? The Box Sale is typically every other Saturday morning at 9:00 AM.  Call to confirm the week of to make sure they are doing it that week, they will know by Wednesday and can confirm.  Although, it starts at 9:00 AM you will want to arrive early because you will have the opportunity to pick which aisle you want to go down.  If you arrive late and the horn has already blown it will be a lot harder to get a great deal or there may not be much left.  The entire sale is over in less then 30 minutes.
    • How Much Does It Cost? The banana boxes are provided and each full box is $7.00.  Note – they take cash or check only!
    • Useful Information! You have to watch some of the items as they may be expired or close to expiring.  The items come from local stores who have overstock or for whatever reason no longer want the items.  Although a couple items we picked up this week were already expire, a few were expiring later in 2011 but the majority of the items were not expiring until 2012 to 2013 or later.  A few items every time in the rush get opened or broken so make sure to check the items before packing them into your box.
    • Tip On Packing Your Box: We typically get the items we are looking for then check for smaller items to squeeze in between the cracks.  For example, one time we got can goods, pasta, cereal, and snacks in a box.  Once we filled it with the regular stuff we stuck packs of gum, gravy / sauce packs around the edges and in the small spaces (I think we ended up with about 100 packs of gum which we distributed among our family and friends).
    • Team Work: We often go as a family because it helps to have someone watching the boxes while you are gathering the items.  Thankfully we have never (or at least not to my knowledge) had someone take items from our boxes but an honest mistake can happen with that many people trying to get their items at the same time.
    • Additional Information: It is outside so dress appropriately for the weather.  If it looks like rain they may cancel or start the event early, if you are driving a distance make sure to call the store to confirm.  Be polite, it is only food and not worth fighting over.  We have always had a pleasant experience but I know some people can get a little “pushy” so be respectful.
    • Is It Worth It?  How Much Do I Save? We typically get between $100 to $300 worth of items into each box, some days you get more others you get less.  For example, one time we got a half a box full of vitamins (ranging from $5 to $20 a piece).   Bigger items will take up more space, but if it is something you will use it may be worth it for your family.

Below is more details about the recent Box Sale.  You can see the specific items from the picture at the beginning of the post:

We bought 107 items and paid $16.00 total which means we spent less than $0.15 per item (see the picture at the beginning of the article)!!!  You can often get some excellent deals at Sav Mor’s Box Sale.  I was hoping to stock up on snack items for our family since I will be traveling a little I wanted to make sure there were plenty of easy snacks to take as well as  meals that could be made quickly for our family.  Our dining table was full once we unpacked the boxes!  We even got some Organic / Whole Wheat food items for the family.  We purchased two boxes at $7.00 each and the case of chips was $2.00 giving us our total of $16.00.  Here is what we got on Saturday:

  • Tips on Flying with Kids

AirTran inflight picture taken earlier this year!

I have the opportunity to travel with our girls over Spring Break.  Thankfully they are wonderful in the car and LOVE to fly in the airplane.  A couple months ago we told the girls that we would be visiting family over Spring Break and they have been looking forward to this week every since that day.  After we first told them about our little trip almost every day they would ask me how many days until Spring.  It wasn’t until a couple weeks later that I realized that they thought that as soon as Spring arrived they would get a break (aka “Spring Break”) and we could go on our road / flying trip.  I had to explain to them that their School Spring Break did not always start on the first day of Spring.  They have been counting down the days and have been encouraging me to pack our suitcases.   Last week we were coming home from Church and Karlie told me to drive faster, when I asked why she said “we need to get home so we can start packing for our trip.”  Even though we were not leaving for several days I let the girls get started.  I had them find their travel backpacks and to start laying out a few items that they want to pack in their backpacks.  After only a few minutes they had a whole pile of items and they felt better about getting started.

Traveling with kids can be a wonderful and fun adventure.  Adding special activities while traveling can make the trip even more exciting and memorable for the kids.  When the kids are happy it makes the whole trip go more smoothly.  Here are a few items we have used on our trips with the kids:

    • Special Backpack – whenever we travel, fly or spend the night somewhere the girls pack their travel backpack full of goodies just for them.  They have had the same backpacks for the last 3 to 4 years.  It has been a great investment and each girl is thrilled to pack items they enjoy in their own backpack.  Plus they proudly carry their treasures through the airport themselves.
    • Books – our girls love books so they pick out a couple small books to take in their backpacks.  We read the books as we are waiting to board the plane, quietly on the plane or whenever we have some downtime.
    • Educational Items – in the backpack we pack a pencil and crayons along with a small notebook, coloring book, and workbooks for them to do on the trip.  They enjoy doing “school” work for fun and it makes me feel good about them practicing their writing, numbers or other practical skills.
    • Snacks – before a big trip we will take the kids to the grocery store and have them pick out one special treat to take with them as a snack on the plane.  For this trip Brina picked out Blueberry Muffins and Karlie picked out 100 Calorie Snack Cookies, makes me laugh and proud to see what they chose this time around!
    • Creative Games – on the trip we come up with games to play with the girls
    1. What shapes / animals / objects do you see in the clouds?
    2. Name everything you see that is ___________ (red, a circle, silly, etc…)
    3. Find every word that contains a ____________ in it (a letter or set of letters like any word that contains a “b” in it or “th”)
    4. Count the number of steps it takes to get to the _______________? (to the terminal, bathroom, seat, baggage claim, etc…)
    5. What is your favorite __________? (memory, food, color, place to visit, etc…..)
    6. Card Games – “Go Fish”, “Old Maid”, “Uno”, and more!
    • Surprise Gifts – inside the girls backpacks we wrap small gifts for them to open up at random times throughout the trip.  Most of the time they are so involved and excited about the adventure that they don’t even open the gifts or only get to 1 or 2.  Although, they are quick to remind us once we have arrived at our destination and have fun opening them while we are visiting or vacationing.
    • Postcards – are fairly inexpensive souvenirs and the girls enjoy picking out and receiving postcards.  They will put them in their special drawer and keep it for many months.  They will pull them out and go through them to remember the special trips together.
    • Mind Your Manners – discuss appropriate manners, rules and guidelines for traveling (especially in a busy airport).  This is important to do at the beginning of the trip.  You can even make a game out of it.
    • Bright Matching Outfits – dress the kids in bright matching outfits so it is easy to see them in the airport.  Even if they are right next to you they are easier to see.
    • Gum – when the plane is ascending or descending it is smart to have your kids chew on some gum to help relieve any of the pressure especially if they have a cold or stuffy nose.  If you have an infant it would be a good time to give them their pacifier.  For a toddler a lollipop or a crunchy snack works well.
    • Rest – Allow the kids to sleep on the plane if they want to rest.  The girls have taken several naps on airplanes.  It gives them an extra boost of energy and helps them relax.  One time all three of us took a snooze on the flight, we were exhausted!

Keeping the kids entertained is a great way to make the trip enjoyable.  For the parents I have a few more ideas of what to do during the  flight to help it go by quickly and smoothly.  The girls are excited, however, we are traveling after a full day of school and we’ll us arriving at our destination the early part of the next day.  I am looking forward to creating more positive traveling moments with the girls and praying that the trip is smooth for everyone driving, flying, and traveling with us.  Do you have any tips for flying with kids?

  • Rice Krispy Super Bowl Footballs

In celebration of the Super Bowl event tomorrow our family has put together Football Rice Krispy treats to share with our family and friends.

Football Rice Krispy Treats with Chocolate Frosting!

We used an oval football cookie cutter to make footballs in celebration of the Super Bowl weekend.  The chocolate frosting turned out pretty well.  The girls had fun helping us decorate and eating the extra rice krispy corners that were not made into footballs.

Rainbow Football Rice Krispy Treats for the Super Bowl!

The girls loved the rainbow colored footballs in celebration of the Super Bowl weekend.  I recommend staying away from the yellow frosting because it doesn’t show up as well.

Are you doing any special recipes for the Super Bowl festivities?
