• Alaskan Cruise – New Holland Zaandam

Once we were back on the New Holland Zaandam cruise ship after exploring the town of Seward, Alaska we were able to check out more of the ship.  The girls were thrilled to see all the cool activities and places on the ship.  They couldn’t wait to try out the pool deck, play a little bit, and try out the different foods as well as fun activities that were coming up that week.  Thankful for the opportunity to spend this time with the family.  We had a blast spending time together.  It was a wonderful family vacation!

  • Travel & Vacation: Family Vacation…..Way Up NORTH!!!

Picture of the last Alaska Airline plane we got on!

North to ALASKA!!!  We took a family vacation to Alaska this summer!  We had a blast!  We packed a lot in our time in Alaska.  We flew Alaska Airlines.  The girls did amazing on all the flights.  We flew through the night both on the way to Alaska and on the way home too.  They went through the airports fine, helped with the luggage, entertained themselves on the plane (and even rested).  Thankful for kids who love to travel and explore new places.

Jake and the girls getting on the plane….notice they are entering the back half the plane.  First time on this type of plane!

  • Travel & Vacation: State License Plate Game

    P1370330c

2 State License Plate Game Boards

Our family enjoys going on road trips.  We’ve had 40 plus hour road trips before so we are always looking for fun ways to stay busy while in the car.  We play games, listen to audio books, read, watch a movie, rest, and more.  One of our road trip rules is the only time the kids are allowed to watch a movie is if the trip is over 5 hours long.  We found these printable State License Plate Game templates on The Dating Divas website just in time for our last road trip (which was only 19 hours long).  The kids have always traveled well and actually look forward to our road trip adventures.

We printed out two of The Dating Divas State License Plate Game sheets, one for each kid.  After printing out the sheets we laminated them so we can re-use them for all our road trips.  Once they are laminated you can use dry erase markers OR crayons to mark off each license plate as you see it.  The only one we have never seen (so far) has been Hawaii.  We’ve seen Alaska a few times, but Hawaii is a hard one to locate.  On one trip we got 40 plus of the license plates.

You can do variations of this game as well.  If you want try to play bingo, see what different shapes you create, four corners, and more.  You only get to mark them off if you actually see them and one other person must see them as well to confirm it.  So if you spot a few while your sibling is resting or playing a different game you may have an advantage.  This is just one of the many fun games we play on our road trips.  The kids enjoy it and it keeps them looking out the window and paying attention to the many sights we are passing along the way.  Thank you The Dating Divas for this awesome template!  We love it!

  • Travel & Vacation: Road Trip Snack Bins

Brina and Karlie’s Road Trip Snack Bins loaded and ready to go!

Our family loves traveling and going on  road trips together.  Road trips have always been one of the exciting adventures our girls look forward to every summer.  It is pretty common for us to pack up the suitcases, snacks, and hit the road with the entire family.  We have done several 40 plus hour road trips with the kids and they still look forward to them. We try to make the road trips a fun adventure for them.  No we don’t take them to fancy restaurants, hotels, or amusement parks along the way…..we do this without adding a bunch of extra costs to our family.  We pack picnic lunch / dinner so we can eat on the road.  We bring along snacks, books, games, audio books, little goodies and more.  We used to pack a basket full of snack items for the girls but it never failed that the basket was always out of reach for someone so that’s when we came up with the road trip travel bins for the girls.

Delicious treats ready to be eaten on our upcoming eighteen hour road trip.

The kids have LOVED having their individual containers of snacks that they can eat as we drive.  The containers are smaller and snap shut so they can be stored right beside the girls seats in the car so they can always reach them.  Each kid gets their own snacks and they can choose what to eat first, second, and so forth.  The girls enjoy having the nuts with the shells to peel off and the majority of the time those are the first items they munch on.  It is hilarious hearing them in the backseat cracking open a peanut!   We try to give them a mix of sweet and salty items, nothing in the bins need refrigeration.  Our kids don’t eat all of these items on a daily basis but when you are doing a 5, 10, 20 or 40 hour road trip it’s important to keep everyone in good spirits and this is an easy way to help.

Items that we packed for this road trip:

    • Homemade Apple Chips
    • Snoopy Fruit Gummies
    • Chocolate Covered Cherries
    • Foot Long Fruit
    • Pack of Oreos
    • Mixed Berry Granola Bar
    • Cheese & Dipping Sticks
    • Twizzler Stick
    • Fruit Punch Powdered Drink Mix Package
    • Mint Chocolate Swirl Marshmallows
    • Pink Frosted Animal Crackers
    • Pink & White Heart Shaped Marshmallows
    • Chocolate Covered Raisins
    • Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers
    • Multiple Flavored and Colored Miniature Marshmallows
    • Sweetarts
    • Box of Nerds
    • Rice Crisps with Chocolate Drizzled
    • Dried Fruit
    • Raspberry Chocolate Covered Pretzels
    • Whole Shelled Peanuts
    • Dried Cranberries
    • White & Pink Flowered Marshmallows
    • Pecans

It is a lot of fun finding a variety of items to fill the Road Trip Snack Bins.  We fill it after the girls are in bed and stick them on their car seats to find when they get into the van and buckle in for the trip.  It is a special treat and gives us a positive start to the road trip too.

Brina and Karlie’s snack containers ready to be put into the car!

When we travel we typically stop only for gas and potty breaks.  We have most of the food, drinks, and snacks we need to eat in the car.  Occasionally, we’ll use a coupon to get a free drink when we fill up with gas but otherwise we try to keep the costs to a minimum which make road trips more affordable and doable.  The girls get to watch DVD’s, listen to audio books and we play games as a special treat.  The trip must be longer than 5 hours for us to get out the DVDs!  Here’s a little more information about the Road Trip Snack Bins and what to pack.

We picked up the containers at Walmart for a couple of dollars.  The stickers were at Hobby Lobby in the scrapbook section and we used a 40% coupon.  We have used these Road Trip Snack Bins for several road trips with our girls and they have held up well.  Once the trip is over and they have finished eating the items in the bins all you have to do is wash them and store until the next family adventure.  It is a blessing to be able to travel with our family.  We have created many amazing family memories on the road together.

  • Travel & Vacation: Leaving On A Jet Plane….

Karlie and Brina watching the airplanes coming and going from the Greenville Spartanburg Airport

Do you remember the John Denver song “I’m leavin’ on a jet plane, Don’t know when I’ll be back again….”?  I don’t necessarily love the entire song but every time I fly that phrase pops into my head.  Our family, especially the kids, love traveling and flying!  The last time our entire family flew was back in January out to Kansas (the pictures are from that trip).  It was the first flight the kids were big enough to sit in their own row together without one of us beside them.  We sat in the row right behind them so we could monitor them and they did very well.   I love seeing their excitement over traveling and flying, it’s contagious!

We are currently gearing up for another fun flight to see family soon.  The girls have already started packing their backpacks, talking about all the places we will go and who we are going to see.  Here are a few pictures from our last adventure on the plane:

Karlie reading the informational sheet for the airplane!

Karlie is all about flying and learning more about airplane.  Every time we fly she reads about the airplane, the safety manual, and anything else she can get her hands on.  The whole experience is a grand adventure for her!

Brina all snuggled up and asleep in her seat on the airplane

Brina loves to fly but when it is a couple hours past her bedtime after a super busy day once the flight is in the air she tends to crash.  Glad to see her sleeping.  If only I could curl up and sleep that comfortably on the airplane seat.

    Karlie loves flying!

Karlie turning around to see what Dad and Mom are up to and sneaking a peek out our window too!  She loves gazing out at all the city lights and watching as the plane lands.

I am truly grateful that both my girls love to travel and fly.  They have always been excited about going on various adventures.  It is a blessing to be able to travel to see family and friends.  The items they pack in their back packs keep them busy for hours while on the plane or at the airports.  I am thankful for the amazing memories we have created throughout our years of traveling together and look forward to many more.

  • Travel & Vacation: Fun Day at Isle of Palms Beach

Beach day with my three favorite people!

I love my family and am thankful for the amazing opportunities we had the past few months.  It was wonderful sharing so many great memories together at home, the beach and traveling!  One of our favorite spots to visit was the beach at Isle of Palms near Charleston, South Carolina.

    Crazy crew at the beach.

The girls have such different personalities!  Karlie has to wear her goggles in the ocean where Brina prefers not having anything on her face in the water.

    Swimming in the ocean.

It always amazes me how long the girls want to stay at the beach.  Usually Jake and I end up decided to go because we are exhausted not because the girls are asking to go.  It is not uncommon for us to stay for 6 to 8 hours swimming, building sand castles, collecting sea shells and eating our picnic lunch.  Although, the girls typically crash on the way back to the hotel or home.

Karlie Kool Kat having a blast

Enjoying her time swimming in the ocean.  Thinking she is pretty cool swimming on her own (at least until the next big wave comes)!

Swimming together at Isle of Palms.  Love spending extra time with the family at the beach.

Brina Bee swimming in the big ocean by herself.

Brina all smiles swimming on her own in the big ocean.

    Digging around in the sand

Sometimes just digging around in the sand is the most entertaining.  We typically do a sand castle and just let them play to their hearts content.  One of those times playing in the mud is just plain fun!

  • Vacation & Travel: Vermont Fun & Celebrations

Karlie, Daddy, and Brina putting together their lego creations!

Thankful for a husband who invests time in the lives of the children.  The girls adore their Daddy!  I love all three of you so very much!

Writing and drawing on tree bark.

It is amazing the cool stuff you find in Vermont.  As Daddy and PopPop were splitting wood these pieces of paper fell off  of the tree and the girls thought they were the neatest “craft” paper.

    Fun times in Vermont

It’s the little stuff that make them smile.  Thankful for opportunity to spend time with Nana and PopPop.

    Celebrating Nana's Birthday!

We were able to celebrate Nana’s birthday during our visit.  The girls helped make and decorate the cake for the party.

    Blowing out the candles!

It was a blessing to share Nana’s birthday with her!

  • Travel & Vacation: Clamming and Playing at the Beach!

We had an amazing trip up north to see family in the New England area. Our family were blessed to have an opportunity to spend a few days with Jake’s cousin and his family! It was a wonderful weekend full of awesome memories and fun times together. Thanks Matt and Jen for sharing your family with us!  We went clamming for the first time ever!!!

    Clamming near Boston!

During low tide we all went to the beach to go clamming!  What a fun gooey adventure – Karlie’s explanation of clamming!

They found one - Daddy and Karlie digging up a clam!

Daddy and Karlie found a clam and are digging it out of the mud!

Such a great adventure, searching for clams!

We walked around barefoot in the sticky mud looking for clams.  When your feet hit something hard (like a rock) you would reach down in the mud and pick up the clam.  In less than 30 minutes we had a basket full of fresh clams for our evening meal.

    Got another CLAM! YAY!!!

Daddy and Karlie got another clam, oh boy!  This is FUN!

Karlie covered in mud but so proud of the clam she found all on her own!

A child’s dream event…..walking around in sticky mud in search for dinner!  Karlie had a blast finding clams and was so excited to get a chance to eat the food she caught!  It was a neat experience and gave us an opportunity to explain a little bit more about the ocean, high & low tides, and clams.  Brina chose to stay on shore, she wasn’t into the sticky muddy mess!

    Basket full of delicious clams!

Matt made two amazing clam recipes for dinner that night – one dish was baked clams and the other was fried.  His homemade tartar sauce was out of this world!!!

Every kids dream (at least kids like Karlie) mud, digging for clams, low tide, and fun at the beach!

Karlie thought it was the best adventure!  She just giggled at the muddy mess and had a blast trying her hand a clamming!  I didn’t get as many pictures of Brina because she decided clamming wasn’t something she wanted to do (all the sticky mud didn’t appeal to her I guess) and since the rest of the family was out clamming I was able to get a couple pictures of Karlie and Daddy splashing around in the mud.

Most unusual door handle for a gate!

There was a race in town so we had to stop a few minutes by a bridge to let the joggers pass.  As were were stopped we had a chance to check out the town a little bit.  We were next to a nice house with this cool outside gate that lead into their yard, it is an arm holding a hammer, the girls thought it was hilarious.  Pretty creative!

Brina having fun in the sand at our "private" beach!

Matt found a super cool beach area that we had to ourselves.  There was water, sand, and plenty of fun for all the kids!  Brina thought it was pretty cool sitting on the “island” (or sand bar in the middle) and playing in the sand.

    Floating along together! Super fun!

The kiddos had a blast floating on their boogie boards!  It was low tide when we arrived and as we swim, grilled out and played the tide slowly kept coming back up.  The kids discovered that they could get on the boards and the current would take them away.  Sometimes they would race each other and other times they would link together so they could float along as one big team.

Our own private beach area! Perfect spot for the kids to play, have a BBQ, and relax!

Our “private” beach, it really was a neat place to play!  See our pile of shoes, line of beach chairs, water to splash in and sand to play around on.  The sand in the middle was a sand bar with water flowing on either side making it a little island for everyone to enjoy (or at least until the tide rose high enough to cover the entire sand bar)!  We had a super fun time exploring and playing with cousins!

Tide is moving in and covering the sandy island, Brina and Karlie are having a blast digging in the sand as the water continues to rise!

The girls love a chance to play in the water and sand!  As the tide was rising and the current was picking up they decided to spend some time digging on their island to help make the water goes faster!

Neat little town on the island!

We could see this cute little town and light house on the island from where we were swimming!  The island is so tiny they don’t have running water or electricity (even in the winter)!

Karlie with a full dump truck of sand, life at the beach is so much fun!

Digging up the sand to fill up the dump truck!  It is amazing how entertaining a toy can be on the beach!

Brina digging in the sand at the beach!

Brina built a few good moats and dug some big holes on the beach!  One hole was so big that if you weren’t careful it could wipe you out going through it (you don’t expect for the ground to drop several inches on shore).

She cracks me up! Karlie thought it was hilarious when the waves flipped her dump truck full of sand!

Karlie tickled silly by the dump truck being tipped over with the waves.  Fun times at the beach!

Brina building up her castle moat!

It takes some serious concentration to build a castle and moat, however it can entertain for hours!

The girls had so much fun with their cousins and friends at the beach!

Fun time at the beach with their cousins and friends.  You never know who you might run into while playing at the beach!

We are thankful for the amazing opportunity to spend a few days with extended family!  We truly are blessed with a wonderful family.  The cousins played together so well and had a blast.  It became obvious that Jen and I hit the same sales during Vacation Bible School week because we managed to buy the exact same swimsuits for the girls.  All four girls had matching suits and we didn’t realize it until we were pulling them out for the kids to wear!

We started out that morning clamming followed by swimming and playing so we had a chance to explore three different beaches near Boston all the same day!   Thanks Matt and Jen for showing us how to gather clams and for a fun day at the beach!  What great memories!

  • Travel & Vacation: Isle of Palms Beach, South Carolina

On our recent trip to Charleston, South Carolina we had the opportunity to spend a long day at the Isle of Palms Beach.  The beach was busier than Tybee Beach in Georgia but it was beautiful.    It was a great day swimming and relaxing together.

    Two chickies at the beach!

Karlie and Brina ready to swim at Isle of Palms Beach near Charleston, SC.

    Karlie and Daddy digging.

Karlie and Daddy made a sand castle while Brina and Mommy picked up sea shells.

Brina's favorite sea shells, she said they look like colorful butterflies.

We found a lot of these little clam shells on the beach.  Even though they are fragile Brina still insisted on picking up as many as possible!

    Brina found a shell!

There were a lot of people on the beach that day but Brina still spotted a bunch of shells!

Daddy and the girls swimming....well really just everyone standing on Daddy.

Brina thought it was hilarious that she could stand on Daddy’s knee and Karlie is trying to put her glasses back on, silly girls!

    Here it comes!

I think Daddy was the only one aware of the big wave about to get them!

    Karlie and Mommy swimming

Karlie wore her sunglasses the entire time we were in the ocean.

Pruned feet from swimming in the ocean too long!

The girls thought it was hilarious seeing their hands and feet pruned after swimming in the ocean.  We had been in for at least an hour maybe two so its going to happen eventually.

    Cool shades Karlie cat.

Karlie chilling for a few minutes after eating her snack.

Brina spent the entire time eating her snack watching the little puppy next to our tent.

Entertained by the little dog next to us.

    Brina catching seashells.

Brina thought it was great sitting at the edge of the water waiting for wave and catching seashells.

    Karlie on the run.

Karlie had fun looking for treasures in the water, she is running to the shell bucket.  The best find that day was 2 quarters.

After several hours in the sun at the beach we went back to the hotel and swam for another three hours.  I am not sure how the girls did it but they slept well that night.  It was a lot of fun to spend a day at the beach and pool with the family.
