The Best Stuff in Life is FREE!
I have come to learn that most treasured things in life really are “free”! You cannot purchase these items and they come spontaneously and sincerely from the giver. They are little wonderful gifts to those on the receiving end. It is easy to get wrapped up in the day to day life and not realize that some of the best stuff that we can get in our lifetime is free. These simple acts of kindness can be a huge blessing to us on a tough day. As a Mom I am thankful for girls who freely and generously shower me with these blessings quite frequently. Here are some of the BEST things in my life that are free:
- A hug from a child
- Word of encouragement from a friend
- Smile from a stranger
- A handful of freshly picked dandelions, weeds, or flowers picked from the yard
- Simple act of kindness
- A handwritten note in the mail
- And Many More Special Blessings
I can think of so many more amazing blessings in my life that a free yet have a positive impact on my life as well as on the lives of others. Another thought to consider is……how often do I give these gifts to others? Often times it is when you demonstrate to your children, family and friends these blessing that you’ll see the ripple effect and eventually the other side of it.
What are some ways you are a blessing to others? Does it take much time or cost you too much to make a positive impact on the lives of the people around you?
14 Gifts of Love

Gifts & Goodies for Daddy! The girls and I are going on a trip over their Spring Break to visit family, however, Jake is staying home to work. We will miss him greatly and even though he will probably enjoy his few days of peace and quiet we decided to wrap up some special surprises for him to enjoy while we are away. We have a wrapped present for each of the days we are gone. The wrapping paper I choose was a mix of happy smiles and hearts to show him how much he makes us smile and that we love him very much. The presents are a variety of goodies that he likes (I cannot tell you exactly what they are yet because he may read this article).
The girls have also put together several sweet notes for Daddy that they have hidden in various places all over the house for him to find. On their easel is a huge heart that says “I love you Daddy” with a series of little hearts along the bottom. Super cute! They are excited to go on the trip but I am thankful they are thinking about their Daddy who will be staying here. All of the notes they did on their own. They had an idea that I was putting together a couple presents for when we were gone because they were with me on one of the adventures to pick up something for him, but the note idea the girls came up with on their own. Hope he enjoys his special goodies while we are away. What special things do you do for your husband / spouse when you have been apart?
Tips on Flying with Kids

AirTran inflight picture taken earlier this year! I have the opportunity to travel with our girls over Spring Break. Thankfully they are wonderful in the car and LOVE to fly in the airplane. A couple months ago we told the girls that we would be visiting family over Spring Break and they have been looking forward to this week every since that day. After we first told them about our little trip almost every day they would ask me how many days until Spring. It wasn’t until a couple weeks later that I realized that they thought that as soon as Spring arrived they would get a break (aka “Spring Break”) and we could go on our road / flying trip. I had to explain to them that their School Spring Break did not always start on the first day of Spring. They have been counting down the days and have been encouraging me to pack our suitcases. Last week we were coming home from Church and Karlie told me to drive faster, when I asked why she said “we need to get home so we can start packing for our trip.” Even though we were not leaving for several days I let the girls get started. I had them find their travel backpacks and to start laying out a few items that they want to pack in their backpacks. After only a few minutes they had a whole pile of items and they felt better about getting started.
Traveling with kids can be a wonderful and fun adventure. Adding special activities while traveling can make the trip even more exciting and memorable for the kids. When the kids are happy it makes the whole trip go more smoothly. Here are a few items we have used on our trips with the kids:
- Special Backpack – whenever we travel, fly or spend the night somewhere the girls pack their travel backpack full of goodies just for them. They have had the same backpacks for the last 3 to 4 years. It has been a great investment and each girl is thrilled to pack items they enjoy in their own backpack. Plus they proudly carry their treasures through the airport themselves.
- Books – our girls love books so they pick out a couple small books to take in their backpacks. We read the books as we are waiting to board the plane, quietly on the plane or whenever we have some downtime.
- Educational Items – in the backpack we pack a pencil and crayons along with a small notebook, coloring book, and workbooks for them to do on the trip. They enjoy doing “school” work for fun and it makes me feel good about them practicing their writing, numbers or other practical skills.
- Snacks – before a big trip we will take the kids to the grocery store and have them pick out one special treat to take with them as a snack on the plane. For this trip Brina picked out Blueberry Muffins and Karlie picked out 100 Calorie Snack Cookies, makes me laugh and proud to see what they chose this time around!
- Creative Games – on the trip we come up with games to play with the girls
- What shapes / animals / objects do you see in the clouds?
- Name everything you see that is ___________ (red, a circle, silly, etc…)
- Find every word that contains a ____________ in it (a letter or set of letters like any word that contains a “b” in it or “th”)
- Count the number of steps it takes to get to the _______________? (to the terminal, bathroom, seat, baggage claim, etc…)
- What is your favorite __________? (memory, food, color, place to visit, etc…..)
- Card Games – “Go Fish”, “Old Maid”, “Uno”, and more!
- Surprise Gifts – inside the girls backpacks we wrap small gifts for them to open up at random times throughout the trip. Most of the time they are so involved and excited about the adventure that they don’t even open the gifts or only get to 1 or 2. Although, they are quick to remind us once we have arrived at our destination and have fun opening them while we are visiting or vacationing.
- Postcards – are fairly inexpensive souvenirs and the girls enjoy picking out and receiving postcards. They will put them in their special drawer and keep it for many months. They will pull them out and go through them to remember the special trips together.
- Mind Your Manners – discuss appropriate manners, rules and guidelines for traveling (especially in a busy airport). This is important to do at the beginning of the trip. You can even make a game out of it.
- Bright Matching Outfits – dress the kids in bright matching outfits so it is easy to see them in the airport. Even if they are right next to you they are easier to see.
- Gum – when the plane is ascending or descending it is smart to have your kids chew on some gum to help relieve any of the pressure especially if they have a cold or stuffy nose. If you have an infant it would be a good time to give them their pacifier. For a toddler a lollipop or a crunchy snack works well.
- Rest – Allow the kids to sleep on the plane if they want to rest. The girls have taken several naps on airplanes. It gives them an extra boost of energy and helps them relax. One time all three of us took a snooze on the flight, we were exhausted!
Keeping the kids entertained is a great way to make the trip enjoyable. For the parents I have a few more ideas of what to do during the flight to help it go by quickly and smoothly. The girls are excited, however, we are traveling after a full day of school and we’ll us arriving at our destination the early part of the next day. I am looking forward to creating more positive traveling moments with the girls and praying that the trip is smooth for everyone driving, flying, and traveling with us. Do you have any tips for flying with kids?
Swagbucks: Earning A Little Extra
Swagbucks…..what is it? That was my thought initially as well. A couple friends mentioned it several times so I decided to check it out for myself. Even though I have only been part of Swagbucks for a few weeks I must say I am impressed. I have been able over the short period of time accumulated quite a few Swagbucks and earn several gifts, including Gift Cards to places like Amazon, Starbucks, and more. Are you looking for ways to get a little bit extra, make your budget stretch, money for gifts, special occasions, gift cards, or just for fun?

Typically you earn between 5 to 20 Swagbucks for searching each day. There are many ways to earn additional Swagbucks (I discuss those a little later in this post).
What Do I Earn With My Swagbucks? (Below are a few of the items categories, they typically have thousands of prizes to choose from every day) Always make sure to check out their “On Sale” and “Hot Deals” categories first before cashing in your Swagbucks because they may have an item or gift card you want on sale or at a discount!

Are There Really Any Benefits?
- YES! I have been able to cash in on multiple prizes and gift cards even though I have only been using it a few weeks.
- If you are already online you can easily begin earning gift cards, prizes, and more just by doing things you already do every day. You can spend your Swagbucks as you earn them or save them up for gifts (birthday, Holidays, weddings, baby showers, Christmas, anniversary, and more).
- It is possible to earn a gift card (or several) every month!
How Do I Earn Additional Swagbucks?
- Install the Swagbucks Toolbar – when you install the Swagbucks toolbar you will earn Swagbucks for searching online. If you prefer to not install the toolbar and continuing using your current sofware (Google, etc….) you can still get rewards by going to Swagbucks hompage and searching online directly from their site. Swagbucks will often give you a free code in your toolbar as well which will add free bonus points to your account.
- Print Swagbucks Coupons – every coupon from Swagbucks that you print and use at a local store earns 10 additional Swagbucks. Get the coupons by going to Swagbucks homepage, click on the “Earn” tab, then select “Coupons” and it will bring you to the current coupons that you can use. I go through the coupons once a month and print the items that I buy regularly. Once you have used the coupon 10 Swagbucks will be added to your account within a few weeks (their website says up to 12 weeks, it usually does not take that long).
- Swagbucks Blog – follow the Swagbucks Blog to get additional free codes. They typically have at least one free code a day on their blog. In additional to that you have a current update on their giveaways and any Swagbucks News.
- Swagbucks Facebook –follow Swagbucks on Facebook and you will find the latest Swagbuck codes. Members post to the wall, start discussions, or make comments that will help you find the bonus codes.
- Swagbucks Twitter – follow Swagbucks on Twitter and you can receive Twitter specific codes. Several times a week they will randomly award their Twitter followers with an additional 100 free Swagbucks which will be added to your account when they use the hashtag #Swagbucks.
- Daily Poll – every day you have the opportunity to participate in the Swagbucks poll and receive 1 additional Swagbucks. While this does not seem to be a lot it takes a matter of seconds to complete the poll and the points really do add up over time.
- Swagbucks TV – this is an easy one to do if you are working on the computer throughout the day. When you are on Swagbucks homepage, click on the “Earn” tab, select “Swagbucks TV” and chose from a variety of items to watch. The length of the videos are typically from 30 seconds up to 5 minutes. Every 10 videos you watch you earn 3 Swagbucks. The reason why this one is easy to do is you can click on a video and have it running while you continue working, cleaning, or other tasks throughout your day. Swagbucks will allow you to earn up to 25 three point rewards within a 24-hour period, which means you can get up to 75 additional points by multi-tasking throughout your day.
- Games – if you enjoy playing various games on your computer this may be a great way to earn additional Swagbucks. I have tried several games and tend to stick to the ones that I do well at. Please Note: There are a lot of free games available to play and earn bonus Swagbucks, however, they do have some you have to pay Swagbucks to play. I stick to only the free games so I don’t have to use my Swagbucks on games.
- Special Offers – you can earn an additional Swagbucks when you complete special offers. Click on the “Earn” tab and select “Special Offers” to see of list of ones you can choose from and complete. Many of the offers require no credit cards or payment to earn the additional Swagbucks. Please Note: You will only receive the specified listed Swagbucks if you complete the special offer, if you stop in the middle or don’t complete it for whatever reason you will not receive any credit for the special offer. There are some free trials that you can sign up for then cancel later, I would recommend only participating in these offers if you are already considering the product. If you do cancel make sure to keep track of the information and dates so you will not be charged for it.
- Groupon Swagbucks – you can earn additional Swagbucks by purchasing a Groupon deal through the Swagbucks website. Click on the “Earn” tab and select “Daily Deals”. You can earn an addtional 150 to 450 in Swagbucks by purchasing a Groupon you were already going to get through Swagbucks. (Note: 450 Swagbucks can earn you hundreds of prizes, including, a $5 Amazon gift Card). If you are already planning on purchasing a Groupon deal consider going through Swagbucks so you can earn a little extra.
- Bonus Video’s & Offers – on the Swagbucks Homepage you will often find a bonus video or offer than takes on you only moments to watch or complete and you will earn additional points. Many times 1 video will be worth 2 points or more.
- Surveys – you can earn additional Swagbucks by taking surveys. This is a great opportunity to earn bonus Swagbucks if you enjoy filling out surveys especially if you qualify for a bunch of the ones they are offering. They do pre-qualify the surveys so you’ll have to meet their qualifications to participate in each individual survey. They give you the amount you will earn as well as the estimated time to complete the survey up front. You have to finish the pre-qualification and survey prior to receiving the additional Swagbucks.
- Trade In – You can earn additional Swagbucks by trading in old electronics, books, phones, MP3 players, games, consoles, and more. If you are not using it or considering donating the items anyway check out how much you can earn in Swagbucks by trading it in. Go to the “Earn” tab and click on “Trade In”. You can look up the items you are wanting to get rid of and find out how much you can get for them by searching for that specific item in the Trade In section. How to do it – Look up the item, print out the pre-paid shipping label, save your receipt, and mail it in. You will receive the amount in your account once they have processed your item. Please Note: you must have at least 600 Swagbucks in your account to qualify for free shipping. It doesn’t take too long to earn those points and by trading in your receive even more Swagbucks.
- Bookmark Regular Pages – bookmark the websites you visit daily (such as Facebook, Twitter, etc…) and search for them using Swagbucks. Go directly to the bookmarked page through Swagbucks instead of directly to the site and you will earn a decent number of Swagbucks each week. Make sure when you are search for the same sites you use a variety of search terms because your account could be flagged if you search the same thing (aka “robotic”) every day.
- Tasks – under the “Earn” tab if you select “Tasks” you will be able to see a list of variety of different tasks you can do to earn Swagbucks. Every task is different and you earn a variety of different amounts based on the task you chose. They do tell you when you start the task how many minutes they anticipate it to take for you to complete. Please Note: Although, you can earn more Swagbucks doing these tasks they typically take a little more time. Make sure you have enough time to complete the task so you receive your additional Swagbucks.
- No Obligation Special Offers – you can go through the “No Obligation Special Offers” every day and earn additional Swagbucks. You don’t have to sign up for the offers and can choose to skip through all the ones they show you (unless you prefer to sign up). You will earn 2 Swagbucks from doing this additional offer. It typically only takes a few seconds to complete.
One other quick note I want to make so you will be informed about Swagbucks – you can earn as much or as little as you want to on your account. However, you are only allowed to purchase 5 of the same item per month. For example, if you want to purchase $5 Amazon Gift Cards at 450 each (which are stackable when purchasing on Amazon) the maximum amount you can order in a month would be 5 – $5 Amazon Gift Cards (2250 Swagbucks). If you want more Amazon Gift Cards you will have to purchase a higher amount or wait until the following month to purchase more at $5 increments. Or you can chose a wide variety of other prizes with your Swagbucks. It is your choice so pick the ones that best fit your family.
You can earn many neat prizes by using Swagbucks during you daily tasks online. I don’t have the time to do every single activity that they offer, but even if I do a few the points add up pretty quickly over the course of a week. Like I said before I have only been doing this for a few weeks and have already earned gift cards to purchase items for my family. Pick the handful of activities that work well for you and do them regularly. You can choose to save your Swagbucks or use them as soon as you can. I have done it a variety of different ways. Right now I am choosing to save up my Swagbucks to get something for a gift.
I would love to learn more about how you earn Swagbucks. Congratulations if you have earned some great prizes already using Swagbucks! Please share in the comments below some of the prizes you have purchased using Swagbucks so the readers can see how it has benefited your family!

Family Celebrations: Happy Birthday Skipper!

Best Buddies - A Girl and Her Dog (Brina and Skipper) The fifth member of our family is full of energy, a loyal friend, loves to play outside and adds a lot of laughter to our family…….Skipper! She is our sweet black lab who the girls absolutely adore! Our little Puddle Skipper Hayes was born on March 14, 2010 and she had fun celebrating her 1st birthday with us! It was a busy day full of a lot of activities but ended it with a little celebration for our furry family member. The girls were so excited to celebrate Skipper’s birthday.
Here are a few pictures from our fun together!

Brina and Karlie wrapping Skipper's birthday gifts! The girls wrapped Skipper’s gifts in newspaper and A LOT of tape! They even had tape on the floor when they were done (you can see a pile in between them on the carpet). They were so excited and had a blast doing the wrapping for their furry sister!

Skipper's Special Birthday Meal! The girls thought it was hilarious putting Skipper’s candle in her special meal. They thought it was funny she would rather have a special birthday meal with “bacon” then a birthday cake. The girls were worried that Skipper was going to burn her nose so she barely got close to the bowl until the candle was blown out, glad they were looking out for her. It was great watching them trying to keep her away from the candle while we sang Happy Birthday!

Skipper eating her birthday treat! The best puppy birthday meal you can ask for – Meaty and Moist, simply delicious! Plus she got to eat her special birthday treat all by herself (no one was wanting to share it with her).

The unwrapping part of the birthday celebrations was exciting and confusing for Skipper, good thing the girls were there to help! Skipper was very excited to get new bones and a toy! She immediately took one bone into the yard, then realized the other one was still on the porch so went back for that one. I really think she stayed up all night playing and eating her bones!
Happy Birthday Skipper! Hope you enjoyed your play time with the family, your feast, bones, and toy! The girls had fun picking them out, wrapping and celebrating with you!!!
