• Travel & Vacation: Waving Goodbye to Fort Lauderdale, Florida

One of Karlie’s favorite places on the boat….yes, you guessed it!  The LIBRARY!!!  I think she read several books from the library and even checked out one to read in the room too.

After getting onto the Independence of the Seas, eating lunch at Windjammers, and exploring a little bit we take a few minutes to sit down and relax in the library.  The kids read through several of the books while some of the adults talked and others take a nap in the soft comfy library chairs.  Once the kids have picked up library books to read for the week we are off to watch the ship leave the Fort Lauderdale port.  It was really neat hearing all the kids comments and seeing the cruise adventure their eyes.

Brina pausing for a moment to read a book at the library

Karlie and Brina enjoying the breeze on the top deck over looking the H2O Zone (which was a very popular spot for the kids)!  It was windy as we were leaving but the kids seemed to love it.

Jeremy and Amber’s family…all ready to go cruising!

Our family, super excited about our first cruise together

Watching the cruise ship ahead of us going out of the Fort Lauderdale port

    It’s a bird….it’s a plane….it’s both!

The kids were fascinated by the draw bridge at Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Watching the ship leave the Fort Lauderdale, Florida port.  You think the ship’s horn is loud on shore, try standing right in front of it when the boat blasts off, it is really LOUD!!!  The kids stood on the chairs so they could see a little better as we took off.

Fort Lauderdale Skyline as we were leaving the port

When the sun goes down and the wind picks up near sunset it can get a little chilly on the top decks of the boat.  Brina is using Karlie as her human wind shield to help her stay warm, ha!

  • Travel & Vacation: Exploring Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas

Looking out over the port in Fort Lauderdale.  There were several other cruise ships leaving the same day as ours.

Once on the Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas the older four kids were ready to explore everything!  We were all over the ship in a matter of minutes from looking over the top deck to walking down the Royal Promenade (aka Main Street).  The kids were very excited to check out all the neat places on the ship.

Checking out everything on the upper deck

Are we ready for take OFF?  Preparing to leave Fort Lauderdale, Florida

    Karlie taking it all in….

Having fun in the Adventure’s Oceans club.  Karlie checking out the geographical map (where are we?!)  while Brandon, Brina, and Nathan have fun with the hula hoops!

Looking down from the top…..don’t lean over too far!

We refer to this part of the boat as “Main Street” because it is where all the shops, restaurants, and stores are located

The older cousins hanging out on the glass bridge.  Wonder if they realize that the only thing between them and the next level is a piece of glass.

  • Travel & Vacation: Beach Fun & Parasailing in Labadee, Haiti

Hanging out with Grandpa Russell at the beach

After a fun morning at the Aqua Park and many trips down the giant water slide we spent some time relaxing, swimming, and digging in the sand on the beach.  The beach was right next to the giant water slide so the kids (and adults) could go down it whenever they wanted all day.  We swam, played, and spent some time tossing the frisbee, skippies, etc….  Another family gave the kids 3 little floating rafts to play with the water so that added to the fun.    After having a BBQ picnic lunch on the beach everyone went back into the water to play for another couple of hours.  It was a great day at Labadee, Haiti.

Aw….what a life….lounging around on vacation at the beach.  Karlie is living it up!

Brina digging around in the sand

Little Zach content with his sea shell treasure

There’s just something about digging in the sand…it’s fun for kids of all ages

Nathan and Amber found a bunch of neat shells…..the only thing is some of the cool shells had residents with claws!  Although Amber figured out a way to clear the water pretty quickly, ha.

The girls having fun splashing around at the beach with Nicko

    Whose ready to go parasailing?

Do you see that little tiny black spot in the bottom middle of the mouth?  Yup, that little speck is Josh way up there!

Lee & Becky parasailing together.  They don’t look scared at all!

That tiny speck of white in the middle of the picture is the boat that is pulling them.  Wow, the boat looks so small and that’s a long rope!  Dad, Josh, Lee and Becky enjoyed some time parasailing in Haiti.

  • Travel & Vacation: Giant Water Slide at Labadee, Haiti

Karlie zipping down the water slide like a pro

After we spent some time at the Aqua Park we headed over to try out the giant water slide!  The slide was a lot of fun.  If you laid down, put your feet together, fold your arms across, and arch your back you could really get some speed going down it.  A few of times you could see an adults arm or leg come over the edge of the slide on the way down.  The slide was a hit with both the kids and adults.  I know several of us went down it many times.   We had a blast zipping down this slide and it was right next to the beach so it was really convenient.

Daddy, Brina, and Karlie heading up the path to get in line for the giant water slide.  You had to walk up stairs and a cement path to get to the top, but usually once at the top you didn’t have to wait very long before you were flying down the slide again.

Daddy and Karlie washing off their feet before going down the giant water slide again.  At the top of the slide they had a spot for you to wash your feet before going down it.

Oh yeah!  Let’s do that one again!

Daddy and Brina coming down the slide!

And it ended with a big splash in the pool of water at the end of the slide.

Brandon all smiles coming down the slide.  I am pretty sure Brandon went down the slide the most number of times, he loved it!

Got a picture of Nathan as he was popping up at the end of the slide….he thought it was pretty neat!

    Daddy flying down the slide

This was my view as I snapped a quick picture at the end of the giant water slide…the expression of Nathan’s face makes me laugh!

The “Travel and Vacation” series is an insight into our trips together as a family and ways we relax.  Life is short and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to build memories with family and explore of of the most amazing places during our time away.  Explore with a good attitude, look for fun, and it will be an awesome trip jammed packed with positive memories.  It is refreshing having some time away from the regular routine.  Make it a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet new people and learn.  You just might see or try something new that takes your breath away!

  • Travel & Vacation: Aqua Park in Labadee, Haiti

Here come Daddy and Brina down the slide!

On our next stop we visited Labadee, Haiti.  The place were we stopped was beautiful and relaxing.  Our first stop of the day was the Aqua Park.  You had to walk down a dock and they had a bunch of huge inflatables in the water from slides to trampolines and more.  The inflatables were spread out so you had to swim from one item to the next and if I remember correctly the water was 30 feet deep in that area.   The kids and adults had a fun time climbing, bouncing, sliding, splashing, and playing at the Aqua Park.

Karlie getting ready to come down the huge water slide into the ocean!  It’s a lot harder then you think to climb up wet bouncy castles and slides!

Aqua Park fun!  This one was a hard one to get onto especially for the kids, but Jeremy, Amber, Josh, and Lee had a blast on it!  They managed to get it moving and spinning pretty fast.

The big kids had fun playing at the Aqua Park too! 🙂

Brina swimming past me on her way to the next Aqua Park item.

  • Vacation: “Cruise Adventure” on Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas (Part 2, Pictures)

We talked a little earlier this week about our cruise vacation on Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas!

Now we would like to share a few pictures of our adventures on board the ship that week!

    Our Stateroom on the cruise!

Our stateroom was great!  They had plenty of shelves and spots to put items away.  It had the most comfortable bed I have slept on in long time.  Jake and I are still trying to figure out how we can get that bed with the rocking motion of the ship so we can sleep soundly again!

Sitting on the window sill in our stateroom!

This picture was requested by our girls.  I did one last time and they wanted another window seat picture.  The beautiful scenery behind me is Puerto Rico.

Playing Put-Put in the dark on the top of the ship. Go Amber!

We played Put-Put or Miniature Golf in the dark and wind.  They had plenty of lights and music going.  Thankfully no one lost their ball but we had a few close calls!

Glass Coffee Table looking down the centrium of the ship (13 floors)

It was pretty amazing looking down through the coffee table to the centrium.  A couple brave people laid across the table but their pictures were too dark with all the lighting beneath them.  It wasn’t an ideal place to linger if you don’t like heights.

Race cars on the wall by the "Pit Stop"! Karlie loves Matchbox cars so she liked this picture!

Karlie LOVES Match box cars so we took this picture for her!

Jake checking out the night sights with the binoculars!

Jake checking out the sights with his binoculars.  It came in handy several times during the trip. The walkie talkies were another great investment especially since we were traveling with a group.

Formal Night with my "sparkly" dress B & K helped me pick out!

Our first formal night on the cruise.  It was fun to dress up, go to dinner and a show with my man!

Every night after dinner our room would be cleaned, bed turned down, and we had a towel friend to welcome us back (tonight was a Swan)

The towel animals were a special treat in our room every night.  Sometimes they were on the bed and other times they were hanging up in the room.  Little gifts from our stateroom attendant!

Indoor Pool in the Solarium with Jake on the bridge over it.

The indoor pool and Solarium was really neat.  Full of plants, a pool, cafe and more.  The pool was really neat especially at night when the ship was moving because you could see the waves rolling back and forth in the pool as the ship rocked.

    Outdoor Pool deck at night!

The outdoor pool was always surrounded by numerous people laying out to work on their tans.

Dad, Josh, and Jeremy playing pool on the Self Leveling Pool Tables in the Safari Club, pretty neat!

The self leveling pool tables were pretty cool.  It was a hit with our group after dinner.  I even played a couple rounds!

Amazing food - Ice Sculpture & Fruit. Love the fruit monkey climbing the palm tree.

The food was simply delicious!  The best part is I didn’t have to cook or clean all week.  Love the fruit monkey in the tree.

    Dolphin carved on a Watermelon

Talented watermelon carvers on board.  These looked awesome and they were the displays!

    Swan carved into a watermelon

The swan was beautiful.  The detailed carving on these and other watermelons was really neat!

A rooster made out of veggies!

The rooster made me laugh.  I have never seen someone turn vegetables into a rooster before, very creative!

Our awesome waiter Noel balancing a glass of water on his head while dancing.

Noel was an awesome waiter.  He was positive, pleasant and entertaining.  Also, he offered a lot of great recommendations on what to do during our days on the islands, several times that proved very valuable!

Elephant towel by our pillow that night.

The elephant was so cute standing next to Jake’s pillows.  Our stateroom attendant did a great job keeping the room clean and was always helpful with any questions we had.  We only watched the ship and activity information channel on TV but since ours wasn’t working we ended up getting a Flat Panel TV in our room by the second day.  The maintenance guy said you would be amazed how many people actually spend the entire cruise in their rooms watching TV.  So thankful Jake isn’t that way because we had a blast exploring islands, learning, on adventures and meeting new people.

Plant full of lobster tails for our table! Delicious!

Noel brought our table plates of lobster tails since everyone ordered lobster one night.  It was wonderful.  The girls were ready to go with us just for the lobster and seafood we ate during our cruise!

Jake and I after dinner and the show!

Our second “formal” dinner night.  Jake and I had wonderful time having fun and relaxing together.  It was great traveling with family yet having some time alone as well.  Lots of fun memories!

Beautiful fresh flowers! Two things I love about this picture - their window sill seats all over the boat and Amber's pirate shirt!

Fresh flowers were distributed throughout the ship.  The islands had the most beautiful plants.  Loved it!

Pool Volleyball - Crew versus Guests

Outdoor pool in the daytime.  They are having a Pool Volleyball competition between the Crew and Guests.  Not sure who won the competition but we watched a couple rounds.

Going down the ship's water slide!

They had a water slide on the ship.  Yes, I had to go down it!  Actually I think we went down it 3 or 4 times.  If you look behind the people standing at the railing you will see the ocean in the background.

Jake and I with our server for the week, Noel! Awesome!

Noel was an excellent waiter.  He even came by our breakfast table the morning we were leaving to say goodbye to our group.  If you go on Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas request Noel as your waiter, you won’t be disappointed!

    Long hallway of staterooms!

This picture makes me laugh because it really is a long hallway with rooms on both sides.  With that being said we never seen or heard anyone in the rooms next to us (well except for Jeremy and Amber, but that was because they were part of our party).

    "3526" our Stateroom!

It was a wonderful week packed full of fun activities and great memories.  Jake and I had a blast and look forward to our next vacation traveling.  Next week I will share with you a little about our adventures in Puerto Rico!

A Vacation To Remember series is a reflection on our recent trip and ways we relaxed.  Life is short and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to build memories with family and explore of of the most amazing places during our time away.  Go with a good attitude and looking for fun and it will be an awesome trip jammed packed with positive memories.  It is refreshing having some time away from the regular routine.  Make it a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet new people and learn.  You just might see or try something new that takes your breath away!

Our days were busy both on and off the ship.  There was always something to do.  We had fun, met a lot of wonderful people and created new memories.  We look forward to having the opportunity to cruise again in the future.  It was great not having to cook or clean the whole week!  On a side note, they had food available when you wanted it pretty much 24 hours a day!  It was nice because you could eat when it fit into your schedule!

Here is a quick introduction of a few key crew members aboard the ship.  The Captain of our cruise ship was Captain Michel Claveau who started his career as a diver. Marc Walker was our Cruise Director from Weymouth, England started out in the entertainment industry as a DJ (22 years ago) then went on to juggle, unicyclist, then onto TV and Radio.  Marc has been with the Royal Caribbean family since the late 1990’s and has served on 20 of Royal Caribbean’s 22 ships.  Sanjay Dumar was our Hotel Director from Mumbai, India.  Marco Marzocchi was our Chief Engineer from Genova, Italy.  Cristiana Maruntelu was our Loyalty & Cruise Sales Manager from Romania.  Alistair Burnett was our Food & Beverage Manager from the United Kingdom.  Noel was our waiter and Janet our head waitress.  They did a fabulous job serving, singing, and creating a pleasant atmosphere during dinner every night we were on the ship.  I will add that the meals were amazing!  We met a lot of other wonderful people aboard the ship.  The staff was from all over the world and we enjoyed getting to know several of them during our stay on the ship.

We spent some time in the late afternoon on the last day packing.  We were sad to pack but excited to continue our trip home and see the girls.  Jake and I walked around the ship on the last night snapping a few more pictures and video clips to show the girls.  They always have a lot of questions about the BIG boat!  If we could Jake and I would have just keep on cruising!  It was a wonderful experience again traveling with Royal Caribbean.  We will be sharing a few pictures on board the ship in a post later this week!

  • Vacation: The Beautiful Island of Dominica

Layou River (the longest and largest) in Dominica surrounded by all the amazing rain forest greenery, the picture doesn't even come close to capturing the real beauty.

On the fifth day of our vacation we arrived in Roseau, Dominica.  It was a beautiful 80 degree day with a slight ocean breeze.  Our adventures in Dominica were both educational and enjoyable because we had such an great tour guide, Curtis!  He was patient with all our questions about the island, knowledgeable regarding the island’s history and he knew how to have an adventure with us.  His family owned a tour business on the island of Dominica.  The informational paper from the Royal Caribbean for today said “Where else in the Caribbean Islands can you find a lake that boils, a pool that shines like an emerald, and a sea that fizzes like champagne?”  Dominica was a beautiful island with a lot of great places to visit.  They have amazing rain forests, black sand beaches, volcanic activity, sulfur springs, and much more.  Dominica is also called “Nature Island of the Caribbean”.  Roseau is Dominica’s capital which was built by the French on top of an ancient Indian village.  The British took over the city, however, the French colonial characteristics are still found on the island.

We got a quick tour of the entire island that day (we only had a day to explore before leaving port).  Dominica among many other things is known for their schools, several of the surrounding Caribbean will send students to Dominica to further their studies.  Our guide first took us to the rain forest when we arrived in the parking lot it was sunny and beautiful as we watched a man shelling coconuts with a machete in the back of his truck (he could do one coconut in a matter of seconds, pretty amazing to watch), Curtis told us that it was his wish that we would get the authentic experience of the rain forest with a light rain shower on our hike through the rain forest to the waterfalls.  We saw lush exotic plants that were several times larger then what we can grow in the USA, orange land crabs, beautiful trees, huge twin waterfalls cascading side by side out of deep gorges in the mountain and so much more.  The walk through the rain forest really did make you appreciate the beautiful creation and grateful for the opportunity to enjoy it.  Curtis’ wish came true…….halfway up the trail it started sprinkling, by the time we were heading down the mountain it was a pretty steady pour, however, with us being in the dense rain forest we didn’t get completely soaked because all the trees and vegetation blocked a lot of the down pour.

Thankfully the rain had subsided before we arrived at our next stop the Sulfur Springs, it was a short hike up to the Springs.  On the way up we picked up a bag of freshly cut Sugar Cane and Coconut for $1 at a roadside stand.  You knew when you were getting closer to the Springs because of the smell.  Sulfur Springs have quite a stench to them but it was neat to see.  We watch the Springs bubbling for several minutes while eating our sugar cane and coconut then headed back down.  They had little roadside stores set up at the bottom of the springs selling local goods from fresh fruit, jewelry, soaps, and more.  It was actually the best prices we saw on the whole trip.  We picked up our magnet of Dominica and a couple small souvenirs for the girls.

We ended our day on Dominica swimming at the black sand beaches.  The water was beautiful and with all the black volcanic rock you couldn’t see the bottom of the ocean like in some of the Caribbean Islands but I liked that it was unique.  One interesting fact about Dominica’s beaches was that the ocean water was less salty which we didn’t realize right away.  Anyone know why it was less salty……because of all the water from the rain forest coming down from the mountain into the ocean diluted it’s salt content.  Another interesting fact we learned in our adventures the locals tend to use more herbal plant medicines in lieu of going to the hospital as often and they have many people that frequently live well over 100 years old because of their healthy diet and tropical climate.  I cannot remember how many people Curtis said were currently well over 100 at the time but it was a lot for such a small island.  They have several active volcanoes on the islands which is the reason for the beautiful black sand beaches.  They are building a pipeline to channel (hydropower) some additional power for the island by using the rain forest.  The main industry, unlike some of the islands, is farming.  This was one place we noticed many of the local residents drinking directly from the rain forest streams and they are said to have wonderful water due to all the tropical rains, I decided to believe them on this one and not try to drink directly from the river myself.

So if you are looking for a beautiful place to visit with lush rain forests, sulfur springs, great hikes, black sand beaches and the diluted salty water you should consider checking out Dominica!  We hope to go back someday to visit and explore Dominica even more!  Also if you are looking for a great tour guide let me know, we have Curtis’s contact information and email address so he can meet you as soon as your feet land on the island.  I will be sharing some pictures of our time in Dominica in a later post.  Below are a few extra facts on Dominica:

    • Dominica was the last of the Caribbean Islands to by colonized by the Europeans.  (The reason why was due to the resistance from the Caribs Indians, approximately 3,000 still live on Dominica and are the only pre-Columbian population remaining in the eastern Caribbean)

  • Cruising on “Serenade of the Seas”

We had the privilege of cruising on Royal Caribbean’s “Serenade of the Seas” ship on our last vacation.  The first evening we were aboard the boat was full of exploring the ship, our cabin, the schedules, activities and the amazing services they had to offer.  It was our second cruise and the “Serenade of the Seas” was a bigger ship as well as a longer trip.  We were excited to have the opportunity to explore more islands during our trip.   Both of us slept very well aboard our time on the ship as they cruised from island to island during the night.  We met a lot of really neat people and was able to spend some quality time with our family.  “Serenade of the Seas” is one of Royal Caribbean’s newer ships.  Here is some information about “Serenade of the Seas”:
