  • Celebrating with a Friend!

    Our pedicures!!!

A great friend, Ashley with Reflecting on the Simple Things in Life, is expecting her first baby soon so we decided to celebrate and spend some girl time together before life gets even busier for her.  We enjoyed a fun Girls Morning Out getting a Pedicure / Manicure, talking, and eating a late brunch!

    Our morning Activities:

    • Pedicure / Manicure at Nguyen Hands & Feet on Woodruff Road.  We got a great deal on a Pedicure / Manicure through Living Social (we paid $16 plus tip to have both our hands and feet done).  If you are looking to do something special with a friend or date night with your man I highly recommend you check out Living Social in your area.  Ashley got a pretty pink color on her toe nails and clear on her finger nails.  I got blue & green on my toe nails and light pink on my finger nails.
    • Late Brunch at Panera Bread – we each got a bagel and Panera’s and a amazing Frozen Mocha, one of the best Chocolate Mocha’s!   Thanks Ash for introducing me to something delicious and addicting!

I am thankful for friends and the many blessings that come along with having them in my life!  I look forward to meeting Mike and Ashley’s new little boy in just a few weeks.  I know Baby G will be well loved by his great parents.

Side Story: When the girls came home from school it didn’t take them long to figure out that I had gotten a pedicure / manicure (the last time was in 2010).

    • Brina’s first comment was “Do I get to go next time?”
    • Karlie’s first comment was “Silly Mommy, you picked a color pattern with sparkles!”

Both comments fit their personalities to perfectly.

  • How to Find Great Kids Books for FREE or at Discount Prices!

Books by the pound at the Goodwill Clearance Center!*

Our family LOVES reading and books!  Over the last few years I have been able to accumulate a wonderful library of books for our girls.  Many of my friends or guests in our home will ask where we have gotten so many great books.  I have shared my secrets with those who have asked.  As I was going through the girls books and sorting them I realized how much these books have been a blessing in our lives and  there may be more people that are trying to find great deals on books for free or at discount prices.

*The picture at the top of the post is some books I recently purchased at the local Goodwill Clearance Center.  I bought 63 books for $4.15 making it approximately 6 cents per book.  The books are used but most are in excellent condition, a lot of the books are worth over $4.00 each themselves.  The majority of the books I purchased were kids books but there were 3 for adults.  I am super excited about reading these with the girls.  A few of the books were even on my (want to buy list), for example 2 of the books are a part of a series called “Help Me Be Good” I have been trying to collect and the two new books I picked up were are on “Teasing” and “Cheating”.  I was able to get a couple Dr. Suess books, educational books, Science books, Golden Books, Scholastic Books, Early Reader Books and more.  Hoping that these will help motivate the girls to read more and we can share with others.

Where to find Great Books at Discount Prices:

    • Goodwill Store – we have gotten a lot of wonderful books at Goodwill.  I typically only purchase the books if they are marked down 50% or less off Goodwills prices.  Goodwill has discounts every day on certain color tags and will have days or times when all tags are discounted.  Most of the books I buy are between $0.25 to $0.50.  Find a location near you.
    • Goodwill Outlet Discount Clearance Center – we are blessed to live in an area that has a Goodwill Clearance Center, if you are in Greenville and enjoy “hunting” for a bargain you need to check it out.  All the items in the store on Haywood Road (115 Haywood Rd, Greenville, SC 29607, Phone: (864) 627-9840) are purchased by pound.  The Goodwill Clearance Center sells the books at $0.25 per pound.   You can often get quite a stack of kids books for $0.25 a pound.  Usually I have between 10 to 20 books per $1.00 so that makes it $0.05 to $0.10 each book.  In the Goodwill Clearance store you will have to dig through a bin full of books to find the ones you want.  Some days there are very few kids books and other days you’ll find a lot of great ones.  Most of the books are used so you’ll have to check for torn pages, writing, or any other imperfections prior to purchasing the item.  If you want to purchase other items at the Goodwill Clearance store you will pay $1.19 per pound (includes clothing, household items, toys, etc….). See if there is a location near you. Picture of a recent purchase is at the top of the blog post.
    • Garage / Yard Sales – I love finding great deals on books at Yard Sales.   You can often get a whole stack of books or even a series of books to read for a $1.00 or less.  The price I target for books at a garage sale is between $0.00 to $0.20 per book.  Many people will have a “free” box at their yard sale and you can find some neat books in the free box or if you are purchasing a number of other clothes or goods you can often get a book or several for free.  They are great add-ons at a yard sale.
    • Used Book Stores – I have one Used Book Store I frequent in our area, Mr K’s Used Books, Music, and More.   Mr. K’s is nice because you can bring in your books and receive cash for them or you can get store credit and purchase additional books.  You get more store credit for a book then you get cash.  Depending on what you are wanting to do you can really continue increasing your library by participating in such a great book store program.  Also, Mr. K’s usually has a box of “free” books so it is at least worth looking at if your already going to the store.  For more information or to check to see if there is a Mr K’s near you.  The one if Greenville is located at Verdae Village, 101 Verdae Blvd, Greenville, SC 29607, (864) 286-3000.
    • Consignment Stores – there are several consignments stores I like to pop into every few months to check out their selection of books.  The nice part about the consignment stores is they are usually wanting to move the books too.  You can set up an account as a consignor for items their store sells.  Many times if I want a book at one of the consignment stores I will have the owner check my account, buy the book with the money on my account and bring the extra cash left over home or to the bank.
    • Library Book Sales – our library has a monthly book sale.  They will often sell books they no longer are carrying in the library (too many of the same book) or donated books.  I have found that the majority of these books are in really good condition.  The children’s books are $0.25 each.  Picture of a recent purchase is at the top of the blog post.
    • Craigslist – you can get some great books for free or at a discount through your local Craigslist.  I was on Craigslist earlier this week looking through the “free” section and found someone giving away free books.  You can often find free or discounted books that people are looking to giveaway.  Some postings will be very descriptive while others are not if you find free ones that you might want it’s okay to email the person giving them away for more information and a picture before driving to meet them.  Craigslist is a great resource for finding great deals, posts for yard sales, books, and more.  Find your local Craigslist forum.
    • Freecycle – is an online forum where people can post items they are giving away.  The point of freecycle is to keep items out of the landfill and to recycle them in the local community.  You can look for free books people are giving away.  Some people will be very descriptive in posting while others will not listed the specifics.  You can ask for more details if you would like.  The nice part about getting books from Freecycle is you will only pay for your gas and time to meet the person who is giving them away because the items on Freecycle are always “free”.  Look up your local Freecycle group.
    • Gifts from Family & Friends – we will often ask for books for birthday and Holiday gifts.  Our family and friends have given the girls some of their favorite books.

Books are great educational tools for the kids and adults.   You can find wonderful books for adults by going to these locations as well.  If you have the patience you can really find almost any book you are looking for within a few months at a discount or even free.  There is only one book on my list that I haven’t received yet but it was just put on my list last month.  I anticipate that it will be available soon.  I don’t go to these stores weekly or even monthly, it is nice if I get to stop by one or more of the above stores once a quarter (sometimes less).  I like to have a few extra books on hand because we give the girls a book every week as an incentive for them to read more.  They earn their books by doing extra chores around the house. Happy Book Shopping to You!  Do you have any special tips on finding free or discounted books?

Books from the local Library Book Sale!

Above is a picture of the 6 Kids books I purchased at the last Library Book Sale I went to (a couple months ago).  The kids books are sold for $0.25 each so I paid $1.50 for all of the books.  The Winnie the Pooh “I’m Really Sorry” was my favorite find because it is a part of a series I am collecting.  The “My Fun with Learning” books have a series of stories in them, many about history and famous historical people.  The “Eyes on Nature Fish” book is an educational book on fish and the “Bugs Life Flik the Inventor” is a great book for my sweet girl who loves science and inventing fun new things.

  • Walgreens: Spent $6 and Got $14 Back

    Walgreens Deals!

I went to Walgreens to stock up on some of their deals this week.  I spent $6.72 including tax at Walgreens this week for health and beauty purchases and received $13.97 Register Rewards and Rebates back from that visit to use towards my next purchase at Walgreens.  For those of you who haven’t used Walgreens Register Rewards or Rebates here’s what I got.

    • 2 – Colgate Total Toothpastes at $3.00 each = $6.00 total with $4.00 Register Rewards Back (free with coupons plus overage with Register Rewards and Coupons)
    • 2 – Nexcare Bandages (30 count) at$2.99 each =  $5.98 total with $2.99 each Mail in Rebate (free with Rebate)
    • 1 – SunBurnt Gel at $3.99 with Mail in Rebate (free with Rebate)
    • 2 – Scotch Strips at$0.75 each = $1.50 total (marked down on clearance from $2.99 each plus had 2 – $1.00 Coupons making them free)
    • 1 – Cherry Chapstick at $1.00
    • 2 – Fiskar Scissors at $0.75 each = $1.50 total (marked down on clearance from $4.99 each)
    • 1 – Suave Professionals Hair Spray at $3.00 (free with coupon)
    • 2 – Scotch Bubble Mailers at $1.50 each = $3.00 total (free sample included)

The total was over $49 with tax before using discounts & coupons.  Here are the coupons I used on the five items.

    • Used $1.00 Colgate Manufacturer Coupon for 1 toothpaste
    • Used $1.00 Colgate Walgreens Store Coupon for 1 toothpaste
    • Used $0.75 Colgate Manufacturer Coupon 1 toothpaste
    • Used $1.00 Scotch Strips Manufacturer Coupon for 1 Scotch Strip
    • Used $1.00 Scotch Strips Manufacturer Coupon for 1 Scotch Strip
    • Used FREE Product Coupon from Sauve Professionals (took off $3.00)
    • Used $12 Register Rewards from previous purchase

I received $13.97 ECB’s and Rebates back today:

    • $4.00 Register Rewards for Colgate
    • $5.98 Rebate for Nexcare Bandages
    • $3.99 Rebate for SunBurnt Gel

Walgreen’s Register Rewards will expire two weeks from the date they are printed so you will need to make sure to use them before their expiration date.  I always keep the ones that are expiring the soonest on top of the stack to make sure to use them first.

Another important fact regarding Walgreen’s Register Rewards you will need to know if you haven’t used them before is you can only use 1 coupon per item.  If you use a manufacturer’s coupon for every item you are purchasing you will not be able to use any Register Reward for that transaction.   If you do have a coupon for each item then check Walgreen’s weekly ad because they will have items on sale each week for pennies up to $1 that you can use as “filler” items but they won’t raise your total too much.  Once you get started using coupons and rewards you may discover, like I did, how to purchase many of your health and beauty items for nothing or very little.  Since using coupons and reward programs I rarely pay full price for any of our health and beauty items plus I usually have extra to share with guests visiting us or to give away.

For those of you who shop regularly at Walgreens I encourage you to share how you were able to save this week!  Although the weekly ad sales are similar every family and situation is different so you may have found items better suited to your household.  In your comment please feel free to share a link to your blog article showing us how you were able to save at Walgreens.

  • Living on a Budget: Groceries $40 for 4

Another week (actually 2 weeks in 1) of doing Groceries $40 for 4. It was a busy week of catching up after being away and since I had been traveling I did two weeks worth of grocery shopping this week. It felt great saving some of the grocery shopping cash since I was doing two weeks worth of shopping while stocking up on some items for our pantry. I mainly stocked up on diary items and fresh strawberries (we ate some, flash froze whole strawberries, and made some amazing Strawberry Jelly) this week. Below are my grocery shopping adventures for the week!

    Groceries from Bi-Lo:

    • $8.86 at Bi-Lo for 3 Gallons of Milk (each with a $1 or 2 – $1 Coupons on them), 2 packs of Cheese, and 2 packs of Yogurt. Plus I used a $5.00 Coupon Off a $10.00 Diary Purchase.
    Freshly picked strawberries!

Groceries from Hunter’s Farm and :

    • $8.50 at Hunter’s Farm for a gallon of Strawberries.  We picked the strawberries ourselves at Hunter’s Farm in Easley, SC, we definitely got our money’s worth on these with two little ones helping pick and eating a few strawberries in between picking!
    • $8.00 at Sandy Flat for a gallon of Strawberries.  My sweet friend, Ashley from Reflecting on the Simple Things In Life, picked these up for me already since she is closer to Taylors picked so we  could make some delicious Strawberry Jelly!
Groceries at CVS - restocking our soda for the next time with family and friends!

    Groceries from CVS:

    • $1.78 at CVS for 2 – 2 liters of Mountain Dew.
    Groceries from Bi-Lo

    Groceries from Bi-Lo:

    • $17.23 at Bi-Lo for 2 gallons of Milk, 1 carton of Eggs, 1 Whipped Topping, 2 packs Danimals Yogurt, 2 cans Cream of Chicken Soup, 2 cans Shredded Chicken, 3 bags Shredded Cheese, 1 box of Lipton Tea Mix packs, 1 box of Propel packs, 1 box of  Snapple packs, 1 box Elbow Macaroni Noodles, 1 bag of Sucralose Sugar,  2 boxes of Laci Le Tea packs, and pack of 3 fresh Zucchini.

I am excited to be back doing our Groceries $40 for 4 budget again.  This week (2 weeks in one) we spent $44.37 on groceries so it was a pretty good week considering it was two weeks worth of groceries.  It was still hard to go $4 over the $40 amount but we need a few items for our fridge and pantry.  I was able to stock up on a few extra items this week, including some diary goods and I froze a couple more gallons of milk since they are discounted.

It is my goal to give you regular updates on this budget section so you can celebrate the good weeks with me and thump me on the bad weeks!  As always you are welcomed to join the journey with me.  I would love to hear your story and how you are doing too.  The purpose of our family doing this it to watch our grocery spending while allowing us to feed our family, enjoy life, share with others, and yet stay on track with our budget.

Living on a Budget is a series of ways our family uses a budget to help keep us accountable with our finances.  Life doesn’t always go as planned.  We have used some of the ideas I will be sharing for years while others are ones we are just starting to implement as we continue finding ways to be creative and have fun with what we have been given.  Having a plan in place allows us the freedom to be smart with what we have been given, get more creative when it is a tight (week, month, year or a season) and when necessary live a much more simplified life.  A budget helps us stay on track so we have more opportunities to enjoy the many blessings we have been given as well as share what we have with others.  There is so much more to life than having all the stuff.  We may not have the newest or greatest items in our house, we drive used cars, and wear hand-me-down clothing…..however, if our family is taken care of and have love for each other and others we have more than all the riches in the world.
