  • Family Celebrations: Happy Mother’s Day

Relaxing in the Hammock with my girls!

Jake got me a hammock for Mother’s Day.  The girls and I enjoyed some time relaxing, laughing, talking and reading stories together in the hammock on Sunday.

Karlie told me “Mom, I think you’ll have a lot of fun relaxing in your hammock, you can read a book or read the Bible and talk to God outside now!”

Brina caught a couple little ladybugs to take on the hammock with us “They like to relax and swing too Mom!”

I am blessed with two beautiful thoughtful girls and a sweet husband.  This year the girls planned Mothers Day from Breakfast in Bed to the gifts and activities.  It was a fun, memorable and relaxing day with the family. My cup truly runeth over….there was a time in my life when I wondered if I would ever have kids and a family of my own.  Thankful that God chose to bless me with these two wonderful daughters.  Being a Mom brings so many precious rewards, fun, and laughter.

    • Breakfast in Bed – Brina and Karlie brought me Cinnamon Raisin Toast, Fresh Fruit (Strawberries, Pineapple, Cantelope, Honeydew, Mango, & Grapes) and a Strawberry Lemonade Fruit Slushy, delicious!  (sorry no pictures of the breakfast in bed)

Sweet Mother's Day Cards the girls made at school!

The girls had fun “surprising” me with their goodies!  Their cards were so cute!

Mother's Day Picture Frames Brina and Karlie made in Sunday School!

The girls were so excited to make these special picture frames in Sunday School.

Brina and Karlie having fun relaxing on the wooden swing Jake made me several years ago! Thanks Handsome!

After church we came home and spent time relaxing together.  We enjoyed the beautiful day outside in the yard!

Freshly picked bouquet of dandelions "lions" and clover compliments of Karlie!

After lunch Karlie went outside to get a special Mother’s Day surprise for me.  She came back in with a handful of freshly picked dandelions and clover.

Mother's Day gift from the girls!

It is the gifts from the heart – the hug, kind word, and thoughtfulness that mean the world to me!  At the same time as I celebrate this amazing day with my family my heart and prayers go out to those who have lost their Moms or who are unable to have children.  Every life is a gift and every day is a treasure from above.   I am thankful for the many blessings (both family and friends) in my life.

  • How to Find Great Kids Books for FREE or at Discount Prices!

Books by the pound at the Goodwill Clearance Center!*

Our family LOVES reading and books!  Over the last few years I have been able to accumulate a wonderful library of books for our girls.  Many of my friends or guests in our home will ask where we have gotten so many great books.  I have shared my secrets with those who have asked.  As I was going through the girls books and sorting them I realized how much these books have been a blessing in our lives and  there may be more people that are trying to find great deals on books for free or at discount prices.

*The picture at the top of the post is some books I recently purchased at the local Goodwill Clearance Center.  I bought 63 books for $4.15 making it approximately 6 cents per book.  The books are used but most are in excellent condition, a lot of the books are worth over $4.00 each themselves.  The majority of the books I purchased were kids books but there were 3 for adults.  I am super excited about reading these with the girls.  A few of the books were even on my (want to buy list), for example 2 of the books are a part of a series called “Help Me Be Good” I have been trying to collect and the two new books I picked up were are on “Teasing” and “Cheating”.  I was able to get a couple Dr. Suess books, educational books, Science books, Golden Books, Scholastic Books, Early Reader Books and more.  Hoping that these will help motivate the girls to read more and we can share with others.

Where to find Great Books at Discount Prices:

    • Goodwill Store – we have gotten a lot of wonderful books at Goodwill.  I typically only purchase the books if they are marked down 50% or less off Goodwills prices.  Goodwill has discounts every day on certain color tags and will have days or times when all tags are discounted.  Most of the books I buy are between $0.25 to $0.50.  Find a location near you.
    • Goodwill Outlet Discount Clearance Center – we are blessed to live in an area that has a Goodwill Clearance Center, if you are in Greenville and enjoy “hunting” for a bargain you need to check it out.  All the items in the store on Haywood Road (115 Haywood Rd, Greenville, SC 29607, Phone: (864) 627-9840) are purchased by pound.  The Goodwill Clearance Center sells the books at $0.25 per pound.   You can often get quite a stack of kids books for $0.25 a pound.  Usually I have between 10 to 20 books per $1.00 so that makes it $0.05 to $0.10 each book.  In the Goodwill Clearance store you will have to dig through a bin full of books to find the ones you want.  Some days there are very few kids books and other days you’ll find a lot of great ones.  Most of the books are used so you’ll have to check for torn pages, writing, or any other imperfections prior to purchasing the item.  If you want to purchase other items at the Goodwill Clearance store you will pay $1.19 per pound (includes clothing, household items, toys, etc….). See if there is a location near you. Picture of a recent purchase is at the top of the blog post.
    • Garage / Yard Sales – I love finding great deals on books at Yard Sales.   You can often get a whole stack of books or even a series of books to read for a $1.00 or less.  The price I target for books at a garage sale is between $0.00 to $0.20 per book.  Many people will have a “free” box at their yard sale and you can find some neat books in the free box or if you are purchasing a number of other clothes or goods you can often get a book or several for free.  They are great add-ons at a yard sale.
    • Used Book Stores – I have one Used Book Store I frequent in our area, Mr K’s Used Books, Music, and More.   Mr. K’s is nice because you can bring in your books and receive cash for them or you can get store credit and purchase additional books.  You get more store credit for a book then you get cash.  Depending on what you are wanting to do you can really continue increasing your library by participating in such a great book store program.  Also, Mr. K’s usually has a box of “free” books so it is at least worth looking at if your already going to the store.  For more information or to check to see if there is a Mr K’s near you.  The one if Greenville is located at Verdae Village, 101 Verdae Blvd, Greenville, SC 29607, (864) 286-3000.
    • Consignment Stores – there are several consignments stores I like to pop into every few months to check out their selection of books.  The nice part about the consignment stores is they are usually wanting to move the books too.  You can set up an account as a consignor for items their store sells.  Many times if I want a book at one of the consignment stores I will have the owner check my account, buy the book with the money on my account and bring the extra cash left over home or to the bank.
    • Library Book Sales – our library has a monthly book sale.  They will often sell books they no longer are carrying in the library (too many of the same book) or donated books.  I have found that the majority of these books are in really good condition.  The children’s books are $0.25 each.  Picture of a recent purchase is at the top of the blog post.
    • Craigslist – you can get some great books for free or at a discount through your local Craigslist.  I was on Craigslist earlier this week looking through the “free” section and found someone giving away free books.  You can often find free or discounted books that people are looking to giveaway.  Some postings will be very descriptive while others are not if you find free ones that you might want it’s okay to email the person giving them away for more information and a picture before driving to meet them.  Craigslist is a great resource for finding great deals, posts for yard sales, books, and more.  Find your local Craigslist forum.
    • Freecycle – is an online forum where people can post items they are giving away.  The point of freecycle is to keep items out of the landfill and to recycle them in the local community.  You can look for free books people are giving away.  Some people will be very descriptive in posting while others will not listed the specifics.  You can ask for more details if you would like.  The nice part about getting books from Freecycle is you will only pay for your gas and time to meet the person who is giving them away because the items on Freecycle are always “free”.  Look up your local Freecycle group.
    • Gifts from Family & Friends – we will often ask for books for birthday and Holiday gifts.  Our family and friends have given the girls some of their favorite books.

Books are great educational tools for the kids and adults.   You can find wonderful books for adults by going to these locations as well.  If you have the patience you can really find almost any book you are looking for within a few months at a discount or even free.  There is only one book on my list that I haven’t received yet but it was just put on my list last month.  I anticipate that it will be available soon.  I don’t go to these stores weekly or even monthly, it is nice if I get to stop by one or more of the above stores once a quarter (sometimes less).  I like to have a few extra books on hand because we give the girls a book every week as an incentive for them to read more.  They earn their books by doing extra chores around the house. Happy Book Shopping to You!  Do you have any special tips on finding free or discounted books?

Books from the local Library Book Sale!

Above is a picture of the 6 Kids books I purchased at the last Library Book Sale I went to (a couple months ago).  The kids books are sold for $0.25 each so I paid $1.50 for all of the books.  The Winnie the Pooh “I’m Really Sorry” was my favorite find because it is a part of a series I am collecting.  The “My Fun with Learning” books have a series of stories in them, many about history and famous historical people.  The “Eyes on Nature Fish” book is an educational book on fish and the “Bugs Life Flik the Inventor” is a great book for my sweet girl who loves science and inventing fun new things.

  • Walgreens: Spent $6 and Got $14 Back

    Walgreens Deals!

I went to Walgreens to stock up on some of their deals this week.  I spent $6.72 including tax at Walgreens this week for health and beauty purchases and received $13.97 Register Rewards and Rebates back from that visit to use towards my next purchase at Walgreens.  For those of you who haven’t used Walgreens Register Rewards or Rebates here’s what I got.

    • 2 – Colgate Total Toothpastes at $3.00 each = $6.00 total with $4.00 Register Rewards Back (free with coupons plus overage with Register Rewards and Coupons)

I received $13.97 ECB’s and Rebates back today:

    • $4.00 Register Rewards for Colgate
    • $5.98 Rebate for Nexcare Bandages
    • $3.99 Rebate for SunBurnt Gel

Walgreen’s Register Rewards will expire two weeks from the date they are printed so you will need to make sure to use them before their expiration date.  I always keep the ones that are expiring the soonest on top of the stack to make sure to use them first.

Another important fact regarding Walgreen’s Register Rewards you will need to know if you haven’t used them before is you can only use 1 coupon per item.  If you use a manufacturer’s coupon for every item you are purchasing you will not be able to use any Register Reward for that transaction.   If you do have a coupon for each item then check Walgreen’s weekly ad because they will have items on sale each week for pennies up to $1 that you can use as “filler” items but they won’t raise your total too much.  Once you get started using coupons and rewards you may discover, like I did, how to purchase many of your health and beauty items for nothing or very little.  Since using coupons and reward programs I rarely pay full price for any of our health and beauty items plus I usually have extra to share with guests visiting us or to give away.

For those of you who shop regularly at Walgreens I encourage you to share how you were able to save this week!  Although the weekly ad sales are similar every family and situation is different so you may have found items better suited to your household.  In your comment please feel free to share a link to your blog article showing us how you were able to save at Walgreens.

  • Recipes: Preparing for a Busy Season

I was thinking back over one of the busiest seasons in our family, right after the birth of our twin daughters.  My life went from 12 weeks of permanent bed rest to the hospital, NICU, preemie babies, and a lot of other activities.  As I was reflecting back on those days I began thinking about the various ways that we prepared in advance to make the whole season more enjoyable for the entire family.  Every family has a busy season whether it is due to an upcoming birth of a baby in your family, travel, work, school, Holidays, or something else.  That time in my life was busy, stressful, and completely new to me.  I have an amazing supportive family, friends, and church family that pitched in by physically helping us (cleaning our home, making meals, helping feed the girls, and so much more) and praying for us (although it was an exhausting and stressful time in our lives God was good and the prayers of many were answered).  Looking back over that period of time in our life we can see even more clearly the multitude of love and blessings that were sent our way.

Since I was on permanent bed rest for 12 weeks I was limited on what I could do as far as menu planning, however, while the girls were in NICU and I was on the mend physically I began preparing for a busy season when they came home.  I spent the majority of my day and late evening in the NICU with the girls, however, I had a few hours every day at home to rest, prep for their homecoming, make meals and more.

Recipes / Menu Planning / Preparation Work that I can do in advance to be better equipped for the busy season:

    • Ground Hamburger – cook up your ground hamburger in advance and freeze it cooked in measured out portions.  My favorite way to cook it is to get a large pack of hamburger put it in the crockpot and heat it on low stirring occasionally to break up the meat.  At the end pour the hamburger into a strainer (over a bowl) drain, and blot with a paper towel.  Allow it to cool them put into baggies or containers.  I typically do between 2 to 4 cups per item.  This allows you to pull the meat out prior to dinner make your meal and eliminates a lot of time, prep, making the meal, and mess.
    • Chicken – precook chicken breasts and freeze into appropriate portions.  If you want shredded chicken I like to cook it in the crockpot, shred it at the end and drain it.  When I wanted cubed chicken I baked the chicken in the oven then cut it up into cubes and measured out the portions in baggies or containers.
    • Casserole – make up a few casseroles in advance like lasagna, Green Bean Tator Tot Casserole, Grandma’s Western Meat Loaf, Cheesy Spaghetti Bake and freeze them.  You can do this in one day or spread it out over the course of several weeks.  When you make lasagna or a casserole for dinner make two and freeze one, if your making casserole for a new Mom make an extra one to freeze.  Over a few weeks you’ll be stocked and prepared for your upcoming busy season.
    • Cookie Dough – I always enjoy making freshly baked cookies for my family and friends, however, during a busy season I don’t always have the extra time to whip up a fresh baked batch of cookies.  There is something about fresh cookies and if you cannot get a great deal on the ones in the store you can still do it at home in advance.  I will make up a double or larger batch of our family’s favorite cookies (Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Raisin, and a handful of others).  Mix up the dough, mold it into a rectangle, wrap it in saran wrap, put it in a Ziploc bag, and freeze until we were ready to eat them.  When I am ready to make cookies during the busy season I will pull out one of the cookie dough packages, use a knife to cut them into the size of cookies I want and bake them.  It works really well especially for those “surprise” guests or neighbor kids dropping by for a snack.  The majority of the work was done in advance, but it allows me to still offer freshly baked goodies during the busy season.  I still do this when I make a fresh batch of cookies because it is a great way save a little extra time in the future.
    • BBQ Chicken or Steak – we have several favorite BBQ sauces.  When I our favorite BBQ sauces go on sale I stock up.  I will often find chicken or steak on clearance at the store.  When I get home take the entire package of chicken or beef and divide it up into several portions.  Sometimes I will put one of our favorite BBQ sauces on the steak or chicken, split the meat into two portions (one to put on the grill for dinner that night and the other half into a container to freeze for a later meal).  When it has been a busy day I will pull out the container of already marinated meat, defrost it, put on the grill, add some veggies, salad, and a meal is ready in no time.

I love finding ways we can make our meals time more efficient, especially during those busy seasons.  Having the ability to make and store already prepped meals saves us the cost of going out to eat or allows us to eat more than sandwiches every meal.  By just prepping the meat you can save a lot of time and still have the opportunity to put together a healthy meal for your family.  What are some ways you prepare for a busy season in your family?
