• Vacation: The Beautiful Island of Dominica

Layou River (the longest and largest) in Dominica surrounded by all the amazing rain forest greenery, the picture doesn't even come close to capturing the real beauty.

On the fifth day of our vacation we arrived in Roseau, Dominica.  It was a beautiful 80 degree day with a slight ocean breeze.  Our adventures in Dominica were both educational and enjoyable because we had such an great tour guide, Curtis!  He was patient with all our questions about the island, knowledgeable regarding the island’s history and he knew how to have an adventure with us.  His family owned a tour business on the island of Dominica.  The informational paper from the Royal Caribbean for today said “Where else in the Caribbean Islands can you find a lake that boils, a pool that shines like an emerald, and a sea that fizzes like champagne?”  Dominica was a beautiful island with a lot of great places to visit.  They have amazing rain forests, black sand beaches, volcanic activity, sulfur springs, and much more.  Dominica is also called “Nature Island of the Caribbean”.  Roseau is Dominica’s capital which was built by the French on top of an ancient Indian village.  The British took over the city, however, the French colonial characteristics are still found on the island.

We got a quick tour of the entire island that day (we only had a day to explore before leaving port).  Dominica among many other things is known for their schools, several of the surrounding Caribbean will send students to Dominica to further their studies.  Our guide first took us to the rain forest when we arrived in the parking lot it was sunny and beautiful as we watched a man shelling coconuts with a machete in the back of his truck (he could do one coconut in a matter of seconds, pretty amazing to watch), Curtis told us that it was his wish that we would get the authentic experience of the rain forest with a light rain shower on our hike through the rain forest to the waterfalls.  We saw lush exotic plants that were several times larger then what we can grow in the USA, orange land crabs, beautiful trees, huge twin waterfalls cascading side by side out of deep gorges in the mountain and so much more.  The walk through the rain forest really did make you appreciate the beautiful creation and grateful for the opportunity to enjoy it.  Curtis’ wish came true…….halfway up the trail it started sprinkling, by the time we were heading down the mountain it was a pretty steady pour, however, with us being in the dense rain forest we didn’t get completely soaked because all the trees and vegetation blocked a lot of the down pour.

Thankfully the rain had subsided before we arrived at our next stop the Sulfur Springs, it was a short hike up to the Springs.  On the way up we picked up a bag of freshly cut Sugar Cane and Coconut for $1 at a roadside stand.  You knew when you were getting closer to the Springs because of the smell.  Sulfur Springs have quite a stench to them but it was neat to see.  We watch the Springs bubbling for several minutes while eating our sugar cane and coconut then headed back down.  They had little roadside stores set up at the bottom of the springs selling local goods from fresh fruit, jewelry, soaps, and more.  It was actually the best prices we saw on the whole trip.  We picked up our magnet of Dominica and a couple small souvenirs for the girls.

We ended our day on Dominica swimming at the black sand beaches.  The water was beautiful and with all the black volcanic rock you couldn’t see the bottom of the ocean like in some of the Caribbean Islands but I liked that it was unique.  One interesting fact about Dominica’s beaches was that the ocean water was less salty which we didn’t realize right away.  Anyone know why it was less salty……because of all the water from the rain forest coming down from the mountain into the ocean diluted it’s salt content.  Another interesting fact we learned in our adventures the locals tend to use more herbal plant medicines in lieu of going to the hospital as often and they have many people that frequently live well over 100 years old because of their healthy diet and tropical climate.  I cannot remember how many people Curtis said were currently well over 100 at the time but it was a lot for such a small island.  They have several active volcanoes on the islands which is the reason for the beautiful black sand beaches.  They are building a pipeline to channel (hydropower) some additional power for the island by using the rain forest.  The main industry, unlike some of the islands, is farming.  This was one place we noticed many of the local residents drinking directly from the rain forest streams and they are said to have wonderful water due to all the tropical rains, I decided to believe them on this one and not try to drink directly from the river myself.

So if you are looking for a beautiful place to visit with lush rain forests, sulfur springs, great hikes, black sand beaches and the diluted salty water you should consider checking out Dominica!  We hope to go back someday to visit and explore Dominica even more!  Also if you are looking for a great tour guide let me know, we have Curtis’s contact information and email address so he can meet you as soon as your feet land on the island.  I will be sharing some pictures of our time in Dominica in a later post.  Below are a few extra facts on Dominica:

  • They Really DO Love Me!

One of the many "I Love You" notes from Jake and girls!

Recently I went on a quick road trip to Orlando, Florida with some friends.  They were moving their items down from North Carolina to Orlando and I was able to spend time traveling with their sweet family.  It was great having a few hours to catch up with friends.  They have three adorable children who traveled very well in the van.  We stopped for lunch at McDonald’s and let them run around then they crashed in the van for a couple hours.  It was wonderful having some time to relax and talk with another Mom friend while traveling.  For dinner we ate outside at a great place called, Crispers, they have a delicious chicken salad wrap if you ever get a chance to go there!  Thankfully everyone made it safely to Orlando and in good spirits.  The kids had school the next day so they quickly took their baths and were tucked into bed.  The next morning I flew out of Orlando back to Greenville, SC.

It was nice having a relaxing time with friends.  Although it was a quick trip it was enjoyable and reminded me of the many amazing blessing I have in my life from my spouse to my children, family and friends.  When I arrived home I was greeted by a VERY excited Skipper!  She was bouncing all around me and eventually gave me a lick on the hand before I was able to give her a treat.  Glad to have such a warm welcome home.  Since Jake was at work and the girls were at school I was just planning on having a quiet day of catching up in the office.  When I got to the top of the stairs I found my first “I Love You” note, I quickly found out that I had “I Love You” notes scattered across the house to welcome me home.  Jake even made the bed before heading into work.  My keyboard had a note on it and underneath the note was one of my favorite candies – Milk Duds.  So thankful for a husband who takes the time to show me his love and to know that my family really does miss me when I am away even for a short trip.  I am also grateful for a husband who is willing and knows how to get the girls up, ready, and off to school (which can be an adventure some mornings)!

Here pictures from my short trip and love notes from my family, simple yet beautiful and perfect!  Jake really knows how to melt my heart!

Napkin from my snack at the airport!
Strawberry Blast Smoothie, it was delicious!!!
    Yummy chocolate chip muffin!
My "I Love You" note on the keyboard!
The "I Love You" note on my keyboard had an extra special surprise underneath, MILK DUDS! Delicious!

I had a series of “I Love You” notes all over the house!

    • On the Kitchen Counter
    • The Kitchen Floor
    • Dining Room Table
    • Office Chair
    • Keyboard
    • Hallway
    • Bathroom
    • Bed with a treat underneath
    • Bedroom floor
    • Entryway
    • In the Printer…..as soon as I printed something a hidden “I love you” note popped out of the printer…super sweet!  The girls thought this one was so funny!

Thankful for my sweet family and that they took the time to show their love to me.  It was a lot of fun coming home to the special surprise.  I had a wonderful time with our friends as well as coming home to my great family (yes I know I am bias).

  • Living on a Budget: Creative Cash

Although I am working part time, a stay at home Mom, and wear many other hats from day to day it is important that I am finding ways not only to save money for our family by using coupons and buying items on sale but to earn a little money to help with the extra expenses.  The extra amount I bring in on top of the work items is what I call “Creative Cash” which means finding ways to make money creatively or with items and talents I have already.  I have tested this goal over the last couple months as I am challenging myself as I make my life more simplified.   I plan to continue this goal for the remaining months of the year.  Despite the many financial obstacles that we have faced as a family we have been blessed with so much.  We believe it is important to honor God with our finances and give to others.

Explanation: The creative cash will be made throughout the entire month through various endeavors.  As it comes in the money is placed into our savings account and withdrawn at the end of the month so it can be split.  It is my goal to make at least $100 extra a month to help with our goals as well as share with others.  At the end of the month the money will be split 50 / 50 with half going towards our current goal we are working on (which at the moment is paying down debt) and the other half going to charity.

February was a wonderful month and we were able to accumulate more than anticipated.  I want to share with you the ways we did it so if you are looking for ways to make a little extra creative cash for your family hopefully we can be an inspiration in getting your creative juices flowing:

    • $196.88 – Items sold on Ebay:   The majority of items sold were coupons (only 2 toys were sold and they counted for less than $15 of the total amount made).  I encourage you to look around at some of the coupons you get the mail, newspapers, magazines, or other places and if you will not have the opportunity to use them then consider selling them for a little extra creative cash.  I had been saving up several to sell so February was a good month with Ebay.  You can check Ebay to see what is the best way to sell them and if it is worth your time to do it.   I have sold anything from lots of grocery coupons to baby coupons to store coupons and more.  Hint – Baby Formula checks / coupons sell really well on Ebay especially if you will not be using them.  Also, Bed Bath & Beyond coupons never expire and sell really well in lots plus you can add the Linens n’ Things coupons to the lot or use them in the stores.
    • $21.24 – Recycled Goods:  we took several items to our local recycle location this month.  It was the biggest recycling month we’ve had because we had a broken dishwasher, a couple scrap metal pieces such as heat vent and an old sewing machine, plus several months worth of regular cans (the price was $255.00 / NT) and aluminum cans ($0.66 / LB).  Our trash company doesn’t pick up recycled goods for us so we decided to do it as a family on our own and as an added perk we get a little extra in return.  Especially if you are already recycling try finding a place in your area that takes recycled goods near you.  I went to CRC Scrap Recycling since I was already going to be working in that area.
    • $120.00 – Items sold on Craigslist: we had a few bigger items that we were no longer using that we sold.  We had really great luck on Craigslist this month, it can be hit and miss on Craigslist depending on the week and what people are looking for on the site.
    • $37.89 – Ebates cash – we ordered just a few items online and received this rebate.  If you are already ordering items online you should check out Ebates.  They give you extra cash back on many online purchases and any additional savings on items we are already purchasing is a bonus.
    • $15.38 – Other miscellaneous amounts earned  (a rebate, return, and extra money) that was added to my stash for the month of February.

February’s “Creative Cash” total was $391.39 which means $195.69 extra that goes towards our current goal, paying down debt and $195.70 goes towards charity.  It was exciting to surge past the $100 goal and to know it helps us get a little closer to our goals as well as helps others along the way.  I have plan of action on ways to earn creative cash in March so stayed tuned, hopefully, it will be another month where we can get closer to our goal and share with others.  Each month I do a variety activities to accomplish this goal, the items above are just the ones I did specifically in February.  I look forward to sharing more of the things that work well for our family as I do them in the upcoming months.

I will share with you the challenges, successes, and updates as I go through this journey so you can keep me accountable or even go through it with me by participating  and sharing your story. Taking the extra time to find ways to help our family as well as invest in the lives of others is important to us.  I hope that we have been able to encourage you to find ways to come up with some creative cash for your household as well.  Obviously, each situation and family is unique so decide what works for you and go for it!  If you know of another way to earn creative cash I would love to hear it!

Living on a Budget is a series of ways our family uses a budget to help keep us accountable with our finances.  Life doesn’t always go as planned.  We have used some of the ideas I will be sharing for years while others are ones we are just starting to implement as we continue finding ways to be creative and have fun with what we have been given.  Having a plan in place allows us the freedom to be smart with what we have been given, get more creative when it is a tight (week, month, year or a season) and when necessary live a much more simplified life.  A budget helps us stay on track so we have more opportunities to enjoy the many blessings we have been given as well as share what we have with others.  There is so much more to life than having all the stuff.  We may not have the newest or greatest items in our house, we drive used cars, and wear hand-me-down clothing…..however, if our family is taken care of and have love for each other and others we have more than all the riches in the world.
